Freeloader Wii: Good News and Bad News

Global Gaming Freeloader Gamecube works on Wii; Nintendo blocks it again

A few weeks ago Datel announced and released the long-awaited Freeloader Wii, allowing European Wii owners and others to play import games on Wii. This is a major boon for Euro Wii users at the moment, mostly for those wanting to join Japan and America in the Brawl in Smash Bros. Brawl.

It has also been discovered (by this reporter) that despite current beliefs, Datel had stealth updated it’s version of the Gamecube Freeloader a few months back. Originally thought to have been blocked indefinitely by a Nintendo firmware update, Datels current Gamecube Freeloader works fine with Wiis updated to 3.2E.

However Nintendo haven’t taken long with countering this release. While the updates on the Brawl disc and the update released only a few days ago to prepare the Wii Shop channel for Wiiware’s launch are “safe”, Wiibrew reports that Nintendo has now added a firmware update to the server that will block Freeloader and also blocks Homebrew channels as well. So far the only way the update is available is if the user manually asks the Wii to check for updates. Though it remains to be seen if coming titles such as Mario Kart will have this update and if the Freeloader can bypass the updates as it claims.
