Int’l Study: Autism Link to Gaming?

Tristan Oliver | April 4, 2008

The More you Play, the More you Show Asperger’s

A joint study by the University of Bolton in the UK and Whitman College in the United States shows that addicted gamers can have symptoms of, but not necessarily be diagnosed outright with Asperger’s Syndrome, a mild form of Autism.

The study of 391 gamers, 86% of them males, showed that the closer the subjects got to an addictive level of gameplay, the more likely it was that they showed three key traits of Asperger’s: neuroticism, agreeableness, and lack of extroversion.  Essentially, the more game time, the more negative the subject’s personality.

“Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming,” said Dr. John Charlton of the University of Bolton.
