No Wii Price Cuts in 2008

Andrew Paulson, Managing Editor | April 27, 2008

With Wii consoles barely sitting on store shelves…

Since being released towards the end of 2006, the Nintendo Wii has gone without a price-cut and Nintendo has said not to expect any at all this year. Nintendo recently stated how the system sits on US shop shelves for barely 90 seconds before they’re bought. If demand is still that high (especially towards the Christmas season), there would be no commercial reason to price drop the Wii.

Recently Xbox 360’s have seen a price drop, with PS3’s also dropping their prices and changing their console packaging with different hard-drives and games. For those still looking to obtain a Nintendo Wii (Unless you dropped a $200 pre-order at Toys R’ Us), GameStop (and EBGames) are currently offering pre-orders for a $399.99 bundle that includes Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Play with extra remote, 1 additional Wii Nunchuck Controller, and a Wii Charge Station along with the console. The item will ship May 9th of this year.

I think it’s a good move on Nintendo’s part. If the demand is so high, it make no sense to reduce the price. Actually, I’d expect a price increase if anything (although that’s entirely unheard of in the Console industry, and will never happen).

As for the PS3 and 360, I expect several price cuts before the end of next year. If they are going to milk any more cash out of the consumers, they’re going to need to match the price (or come close) of the Wii eventually.
