Shatters Record in Two Categories
You don’t necessarily need the Guinness Book of World Records to confirm that Grand Theft Auto IV is a bona-fide blockbuster. But it always helps.
Today the committee overseeing the world records delivered the good news to Take-Two Interactive and the gaming public. The game has shattered records in the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours category, as well as Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours.
Officially, Guinness clocked in GTAIV’s sales at 3.6 million units on day one, generating a total of $310 million. Previously Halo 3 held the gaming sales record with $170 million in revenue generated. The only thing that’s even remotely close to the game’s record is J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows. That book took in $220 million in sales on its first day in bookstores.
