Seeing actual gameplay footage has erased a few of my fears and concerns left over from Sonic 06. Firstly, Sonic looks a lot faster. Even from a standing start Sonic reaches a speed never seen in the last Sonic game and that’s even before boosting. Secondly the homing attack has been sped up and includes a target over the enemy you are about to hit, hopefully ending failed homing attacks past enemies and into bottomless pits. The levels looked fun with lots of different paths everywhere and the seamless progression from Sonic Adventure style gameplay to 2.5D was awe inspiring. The animation of Sonic himself is top notch (check out the Sonic laying down idle animation at the start of the playthrough video!) and I like how they’ve shrunk him from the gangly height he had in Sonic 06.

The Werehog gameplay looks interesting. I like the look of the character, it’s the right side of a cartoon to look like a plausible monster for Sonic to turn into. The night time levels are obviously much slower than the traditional Sonic levels but not as slow as the first trailer might suggest. By holding a button the Werehog actually leaps into a feral looking gallop using his oversized hands to push him along at speed. These sections look to include a bit of traditional platforming made less frustrating by the ability of the Werehog to use his arms as a sort of grappling hook to latch onto ledges should he not quite make a jump. The combat looks fun but I worry that a lack of depth may make it repetitive. Apparently the Werehog boasts over 30 fighting moves to spice things up but we’ll see.
