Fan Flash: Sonic GL returns!

Ryan Bloom | July 17, 2008

Impressive 3D fangame rises from the dead and resumes development.

Years ago, videos surfaced and were passed around Youtube of a 3D Sonic game known as Sonic GL. Borrowing heavily from the Sonic Adventure 2 template, Sonic GL wowed audiences with its impressive level speed.

Unfortunately, after 2006’s SONIC the Hedgehog was unveiled, the game’s one and only developer, BOSSER Jérome, called it quits, out of respect for SonicTeam and Sega. He feared his game would possibly cut in to Sega’s own profits, what with rumors floating around about a PC version of Sonic 2006. Now, nearly two years later, it seems BOSSER Jérome is back and has resumed updates on Sonic GL. On his website, he writes:

After 3 years of idle I decided to continue some of my projects during my rare spare time.

I’m a French programmer, design, modeler and animator of 23 years old. I was programming on computer (making game among other things) since I was 9 (began with Pascal and Qbasic). I just been graduated from the French engineering school ENSAM “Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts et Metiers”.

Programming is only a hobby right now (I’m self-taught man in computer science). 3D real time is not my only one knowledge domain, I deal with artificial intelligence (I’ve developed my own algorithms mostly for game), network security and programming, advanced physic simulations (water, solid, deformation, finite element…).  I’m developing alone and all the contents on this site are my own creation (excluding sounds and music). Here are some of my programs . Enjoy :-)

Included in the update is a new website design and several new Sonic GL screenshots showcasing brand new advanced shader effects like motion blur and parallax mapping. More updates are promised in the future, including more video.

As the weeks until the Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2008 slip away, it would appear things are already getting interesting!

It’s great to see he’s starting that back up again, it was a wonderful example of what the fandom can do and looked like a truly awesome game. I hope he gets to finish it this time around, it would make many happy.
