Will Sonic fandom soon worship Naka’s next project?
In what could be the most important development for anything Sonic in some time, the man who created him has gone on the record saying he will, in essence, redo Sonic the way it perhaps should be done…just not with Sonic.
In an interview with Gamasutra, Naka says that his new development studio Prope, now 40+ strong, is looking to create a new character franchise. It will be action-based, and according to Naka:
We’re actually planning on making a game like Sonic right now. We want to keep trying to make various kinds of games.
Gamasutra promises a longer interview later with Yuji Naka. So, will the principal man behind Sonic put the hedgehog (and his former company) to shame with this new endeavor? How will fans respond? Will there be a migration, assuming Prope can get the spirit of Sonic buried deep within this upcoming franchise? We’ll keep tabs on this story–it could be a major turning point for Sonic fans old and new.

Where exactly did you get “redo Sonic the way it should be done, just not with Sonic” from that statement?
All he said was that he was going to make a Sonic like title, not a freakin’ “Sonic killer” or some outrageous term like that.

I’m not sure the franchise will die off, but if one of the main men behind Sonic creates a new franchise that’s like Sonic and does the system better than the current Sonic games are, I could see it being a threat.

I mean seriously, it’s a new franchise from a new company from one of the guys who used to work on Sonic. Sonic (unfortuunately) isn’t going anywhere. Stop fretting…

Yuji Naka is also the man behind the acclaimed NiGHTS too. Sonic was the king of land so Naka wanted a king of the air. His absence in the making of NiGHTS for the Wii showed exactly the drive and focus that has been lacking from the Sonic Team recently. If Prope can make a game to exploit another of the elements and design a character to fit that world perfectly we could see another acclaimed character like Sonic or NiGHTS
Sounds good to me, It’s not the end of the world if they do try a new Sonic – like platformer. It might actually be a good thing.
BTW, Yuki Naka shouldint get full credit for the creation of Sonic. The man with “No Name”, Naoto Ōshima also took great part in his creation, along with some tips from designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Nonetheless I still can’t wait to see that Naka’s new games have to offer.

How about something where you control the weather, the elements themselves; Maybe something where you beat robots with nature turning decrepit polluted areas into flourishing forests…

After all those years of working with his creation… he just… abandons it and attempts to come up with something else?? Just because Sonic was a huge success that doesn’t mean that every single character he creates is going to be as successful!

Don’t worry bluehog45 , Sonic is very much still alive in the hands of the Sonic Team. Yuji Naka who heads up his own company Prope just wants to make a new character it seems. Prope is separate to Sega but apparently have a publishing deal with them
Emii Rozu. He’s not turned his back on Sonic, he just wanted to do something else and have more control. In fact Naka is still a big Sonic fan and was reportedly ecstatic to see Sonic in Smash Bros Brawl

Sonic Team/Yuji Naka already did that too. It was called Burning Rangers. Awesome game that was.

Wow, this certainly sounds interesting! If it correctly captures the spirit of Sonic, I could foresee a possible crossover game featuring both franchises (that would be a joint effort between Sega and Prope, of course). Wouldn’t that be something?
