First Review Comes in; Details Sketchy
GoNintendo is reporting that the latest issue of Nintendo Power includes a review of Sonic Unleashed.
The magazine reportedly gave the Wii edition of the game an 8 out of 10. That’s among the higher scores given in the issue and on part with other titles reviewed, such as Animal Crossing: City Folk and Tales of Symphonia 2.
There are rumors spreading that there’s an excerpt in the article that states there are as many as four times as many Werehog components in the night as there are daytime quests with Sonic. Many fans are speculating that this has something to do with the existence of Sun and Moon Medals in the game, which may unlock new areas in day and night, respectively. Current thought suggests that Nintendo Power reviewers may have obtained more Moon Medals, hence the illusion of the presence of more nighttime levels.
We are working to bring you additional confirmation as well as some sort of scan. We’ll let you know more details as soon as it allows.

*yawn* Another mediocrity… Well smegging done, SEGA. If there’s one thing you do right these days, it’s building up confidence and crushing it at exactly the right time.
Next time, get off your high horse and make the ‘Ultimate Sonic Experience’ that you constantly rave about. Otherwise that seat in Virtual Hell with your name on it will soon bask in the glory of feeling your ass plant itself on top of it for eternity.
To Kits’Okami – How is it “Another mediocrity” 8 out of 10 is still a pretty high score. Also they are trying to make the ultimate sonic experience, what do you think they were trying to do with unleashed.
Seriously, it’s still a rumour. I don’t believe that there are 4 times as many werehog stages – every single trailer we’ve seen shows a daytime and nightime stage for each of the areas. Either way, I’m not bothered – even if there are 4 times as many werehog stages, Nintendo Power still gave it an 8/10. So it’s gotta be fun, anyway. I’m actually looking forward to the nightime stages, I think they’ll be a lot of fun, possibly even more than the daytime stages. The Werehog gameplay is tried and true – there’s no hit and miss element of trying to create good gameplay for Sonic.
Kinda wish that to break up the pace and keep the speed sections fresh they’d let us play as Tails rather than the Werehog…I miss that little guy. Not that I’m complaining, though – Sonic Unleashed is looking better every day. 11 days left…
IMO,Nintendo Power is not really the best place for reviews on Sonic games.
They did give the Sonic Rush games high scores and since the day stages of Unleashed plays very much like those games it would make sense to give a score like 8 out of 10.
@Liam: I’ve read the thoughts of those who have actually played the final version and they’ve said it’s just another case of, in my words, “Good Look, Bad Taste” or in their words “another crap Sonic game”. Surely you must have thought at one point that Sonic deserves much better than this?
I cannot believe I’ve allowed myself to be duped by SEGA AGAIN. I’m ashamed to call myself a Sonic fan nowadays knowing that this is the best SEGA can do with the franchise; another hyped-up shitfest.
I guess from now on, I’ll be watching video games on Youtube rather than buying and playing them. Gaming has just lost its appeal to me, and it’s not just Sonic that’s helped out with that (though he is a big factor).
Oh, will all you so-called “Sonic Fans” stop whining your butts off about this? Let me tell you something: 8/10 IS A SCORE THAT’S REALLY HARD TO GET. Big games such as Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, and now Animal Crossing: City Folk have ALL received 8/10. You guys are just a bunch of whiny brats because you’re comparing Sonic Unleashed to Sonic 1 and 2. A friendly notice: SEGA IS NEVER GOING TO DO SONIC 1 AND 2 EVER EVER AGAIN. They were trying their best to combine gameply from those two games and the more recent Sonic Adventure games, as well as trying to add some new gimmick, which would be the Werehog. Judging by the trailers, they did a good job.
I know, I know, I won’t know for sure until I actually play the thing, but will you guys at least put a LITTLE faith in Sega and stop being such sticks in the mud??
i agree with hypo power done lose such faith so quickly when you havent seen the game actual review i say wait for scans if “fans” are so into sonic u will atleast rent before you buy or make a decision based on at least 5 or more reviews so stop talkin like shit all of except Hypo Power and have been bashing on the game for getting an 8/10
cept E wasnt bashin on the game
A 8.0 is a B guys, thats a good score. And this is the WII version.
*cracks knuckles*
OK, I’ve had enough of being made out to be a bad guy just because I think Unleashed is crap.
@Hypo Power: I AM a Sonic fan.
The whole reason why I’m angry is because Sonic hasn’t been meeting my expectations lately, which are simply to have a solid, fun experience which doesn’t need ultimate dexterity to complete, bizarre foreign gimmicks to generate interest or EPIC AWESOMENESS to be a fantastic game. And no, that doesn’t mean that I want a Mega Drive-like experience (though that would be nice). This is coming from a guy who, depsite first impressions (then again, I wasn’t eating the sweetest of fruits from the Tree of Life back then), thought that Sonic Battle was one of the best Sonic games to come out in recent times. I even liked Sonic Labyrinth, for Rah’s sake!
And no, I don’t think 8/10 is a suitable score for a new Sonic game. Sonic NEEDS more than that, especially from those who have grown to distrust him in recent times, something that, thanks to my experiences with Chronicles, I really need to teach myself to do.
@kev: I can’t believe people are still using that excuse to counter one’s opinion. I don’t NEED to play the game. I’ve seen the game in motion, I’ve seen people playing the game, I’ve read the impressions it gave to those who have played the final version and they do little but reinforce my opinion of Unleashed.
I think Sonic has gone down the shitter and Unleashed does nothing to redeem him in the eyes of the gaming public, so go fig’.
All I am saying is that this werehog rumour better be bull because if they have effed up the balance once again I am going to be pissed off hardcore. It doesnt take a friggin god to realise people that want to pick up a sonic game want to play a sonic experience.
Why they even though 60/40 was a decent balance I want 80/20 in favour of sonic sections. Though they say that they have made it clear the the werehog sections are signicantly longer therefore it feels balanced. Thats rubbish I bet it flipping dont.
God I want more info… I shall wait on.
2 days left, anyone wanna hack into a Ship to get it?
8/10! is is only numbers
doesn’t matter =/
i like Sonic Unleashed SO much and the important is when play
the people who loves sonic feels the old and new style for a best way for sonic
I HATE the rankings and o my god Sonic no is sonic ¬¬
love the game… no numbers X_X
@Kits’Okami
All you ever do is complain. Actually wait to see reviews. Do you actually think this game would get great ratings like the originals? You would have to be nuts to think the reviewers would do that. Even Megaman 9 that is just like the original NES games have gotten some 8′s from the reviewers. >_>
Eeer Kits Okami. 8 is not medicore it’s really good. 5 is medicore. And a game is good if it gets 8 out of 10!!
Yes it got a good grade 8/10 is great
$100 bucks says Wii/PS2 version will get a score between 7 and 8 out of 10 and The 360 version, a score between 6 and 7 on IGN.
Alright, everyone just shut the fuck up. I’m in no mood for any more of your shit.
@Lan: I bet all you ever do is worship Sonic like the fucking Pope.
I don’t need to read fucking reviews by biased cretins who either totally hate Sonic or masturbate to every second of every game. If I need to know whether the game is good or shit, I look for people who have actually played it and read/hear what they have to say about it. It’s much more effective that way, ‘cos these bastards are just average gamers who don’t lie about the quality of a game. Then I Google the game for screenshots and trailers to see if I like the look of it myself. If I don’t, I’ll say so and I won’t hold back for dickweeds like you who get an erection whenever a Sonic character says “Hi, Long time no see!” (another pet peeve of mine).
And yeah, maybe I would like to see a Sonic game get fucking amazing scores for once. Maybe then I wouldn’t have to bitch about how the series is as crap as Crash Bandicoot every freaking game and actually stoop to your level for once.
@Oznic: I must have said this already. I think Sonic getting 8′s isn’t good enough. Fine for any other shitty games, but not for Sonic. He’ll need more than 8′s if anyone is gonna believe in this dying franchise again.
@Kits’Okami : dude again play the fuckin game first before u label it as shit alright! ur not a sonic fan we dont worship him like the pope by this time i’m starting to think ur bein a hater calm the fuck down okay. its a video game alright dont starting getting upset like a lil crybaby cause everyone doesnt believe in ur fucked up philoshy calm down it’s a video no one else is gettin this worked up hey if u dont like 1 rating out of many 2 come u estabilished urself as an ANTI sonic fan rather than a REAL fan as u claim.
(EDIT – Inflammatory -T)
tssznews community and staff i apoligize for ill behavior i just had 2 say that no disrespect 2 any of u
Guys, guys, GUYS!!!! Will all of you shut the heck up?! Y’know, to me, reviews are just empty words. I only look at a review as a last resort. In order to see if the game is good, I do some old-fashioned thing that people don’t seem to do anymore: I PLAY IT. Why don’t all of you just shut your traps and wait and see what’s going to happen? And NO, I’m not singling anyone out. Not Kits’Okami, not kev, not anyone.
You want medicore gameplay Kits’Okami play Sonic and the secret rings and Shadow the Hedgehog. This Unleashed game fared pretty well. At least Sega tried taking their time instead of rushing the game.
The harsh launguage over a video game? Seriously?
Anyways, the Wii version is a bonus here. What really matters is how the HD version does. That’s the one being designed entirely by the new Sonic Team and directed by Mr.Hashimoto. That’s the one that really shows where the game is going more.
The fact that a scaled down port that look rather weaker gets an 8 is kind of nice. But if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. That’s your power as a consumer. Not cursing out everybody…
okay I admit my cursing at kits’okami was not needed at all i got a little out of control and that’s my fault i agree that an 8 is a nice grade and hope we’ll see many more and better scores 2 come i hope that the ps3/360 version will be great and get awsome reviews
Just give Sonic Unleashed a chance… i don’t know why your saying its a bad game kit’s okami even when you didn’t play it… just wait when it bites you in the behind.
I mean sega’s trying their best from that sonic 2006 game to give players a sonic experience and this is the closest they’ve gotten other than sonic adventure series.
I can’t wait for this game and getting an 8 out of ten isn’t bad on a NINTENDO magazine.
You know what, you’re all fucking pathetic. All of you.
Everyone has their own fucking opinions, and every time Okami-san says something a tiny bit negative, you all grab your spears and treat him like he’s a monster. He says he liked Sonic Labyrinth, and I say I don’t. You don’t see me cursing at him.
And Okami-san, I respect your opinion, but when someone starts bashing you like these guys, you don’t stoop to their level. Handle it maturely.
The point is, don’t let other people’s opinions influence your one. Be an independent Sonic fan and create your own opinion. And besides, this is just a rumor. I subscribe to NP, and when the review comes, I’ll let you guys get your fill on the whole thing. I like TSSZ News, but it makes me sick when you all fight over something ridiculous.
This is just one review and we’ve got more to come, like EGM, ONM, um…not IGN, 1UP, or Gamespot, they’re assholes. The point is, just wait.
I’m pathetic? All I did was ask people to calm down and not cure each other out over a videogame. Nice job generalizing.
Kits makes a point about reviews backing up your preconcieved notions…I’m positive and I get more positive. He’s pessimistic and gets more pessimistic.
Hey, Kits’Okami
stop bringing the flaming on to yourself.
This is a Sonic website, you aren’t going to go trashing a Sonic game and get a comment like “Hey, I agree.”
Maybe if you didn’t give use a bunch of comments that all boil down to “It’s fuckin’ shit dick suckas!” we’d listen up.
Solution: Shut the fuck up, we don’t want your boring old opinion anyway.
Sorry Crazee-san, I meant to mention you, but it slipped my mind. I’m glad you weren’t caught in this flame war. Welcome to my side. ^^
@HyperSonic: Played both and still looking for the poor bastard who wants to buy them off me.
@Mirage: I could say the same thing to you, Mr. Optimist v. 3075. I’ve given Sonic enough sodding “chances” over the past few years and so far, the only games that have actually exceeded my expectations were Sonic Battle and Sonic Rush Adventure. Everything else either met my expectations exactly or had crushed my hope even more. And SEGA had never tried hard to do anything other than fool people into believing that the past few games were “going back to the roots” or “reinventing the franchise”.
@kev: Ask yourself this question and try to think up of an intelligent answer; “What is a Sonic fan?” No, seriously, do it before you slander me any more. Are Sonic fans right to have an optimism so blind that they fail to recognise the frankly obvious flaws of the recent installments? Or are the “bitches” right in thinking that SEGA needs to get their act together and release a title which plays as good as it looks?
@ Anyone who has a bone to pick with me: Kindly shut your fucking cockholes and try to accept my admittedly melodramatic pessimism as a valid opinion. Just ‘cos I don’t like something you practically wank over doesn’t mean that I’m any more wrong than you are. If I’m not allowed to base my opinion on trailers and gamer’s hands-on impressions then neither are you.
In other news, SEGA owes some criminals Thailand. More on this after the weather.
I base my opinions on trailers and my own understanding of what entertains me. There are franchises I gave up on awhile ago. Sometimes, certain series just pass us by. It’s the reason I have such antipathy for Capcom(Megaman) and Nintendo(Donkey Kong). But I guess I just gave up.LOL
Kits Okami: 8 is good. But I know. I want 9 or 9.5 or even 10 too. (Out of ten) But remember this is Nintendo Power, they always give games bad score. We might see a 9 out of ten somewhere after the realease.
But the thing is, you say that you don’t really like SU, but try it before you say somthing. Sometimes it’s just:Wow I had so wrong about this game or : man this suck!
But I know how you feel when people say that you’re an idiot cus you don’t like it and stuff like that.
When Super Mario Galaxy came out I buyed it and I think it’s one of the worst game I’ve ever played. People was bitching at med cus I didn’t like.
So sorry for that I just said. But I get a little bit angry when people say that it sucks before they’ve played it.
Well then i respect your opinion about sonic and don’t assume i’m a man
You know, NP gave Chronicles a lower score than other magazines.
Actually, check THIS:
Nintendo power gave LEGEND OF ZELDA a lower score than other magazines. NP is a lot fairer than they used to be, and they actually tend to be pretty fair. Their opinions can be odd, though….so they like some games that others don’t and don’t like games others like. But they’re fair enough.
Update:
@Maddok: Hmm… Hey, Sonic the Hedgehog! Cool! To think, all this time I’ve been talking about Sonic games on a SONIC website! Geez, what a coincidence!
*end sarcasm* Seriously pal, you’ve got nerve. The only ones flamming are you and the other scrotums that are beating me to a vegetable-like state because I dislike a Sonic game. Maybe if you and the others actually accepted that I don’t like the game and continue on your merry way, I would’ve have to use gutter language against people I’d otherwise consider to trust.
@SOAP: You see, you’re probably the most agreeable and sensible Sonic fan I’ve met so far. Not only do you sit back and allow people to voice their opinions, but you take both sides of the arguement and politely tell them what they’re doing wrong. I only wish that I had your level of tolerance.
Not meaning to be rude to you S, but I have my own means of independence. It may not be the brightest of ideas to trust another’s opinion, but I have good reason as to why I believe them. They’re honest gamers who have played the game and if they say Unleashed isn’t worth my time and money, then I’ll be wise not to go rushing out in the dead of winter to pay £30-£40 for a game that I’ll end up hating and giving to my younger siblings as a present like I did with Sonic Chronicles.
That said, I do respect you telling me my wrongs. It doesn’t feel right swearing at people over an opinion and I hate acting like an internet junkie who flips off at anyone who thinks God of War was merely ‘OK’, but I have no tolerance over people who sit on their high ass and stab me for being diverse. To quote Lee Evans: “You send me your shit, I’ll send you some of fucking mine!”
Now, any more for any more?
Thanks very much for the compliment Okami-sama. ^^
To tell you the truth guys, I can actually get pretty heated in an argument like this one, but my older brother once told me “Don’t argue over the internet. No one wins.” or something like that. ^^
I listened what he told me and that’s why I’m able to be the tolerant and sensible Sonic fan I am today.
@Oznic: Since I’m not American, I don’t really know how trustworthy a source NP really is.
As well as trusting people who have actually played the game, I also follow by Crazee’s example and check the game out. I admit that I was excited for Unleashed a few times, but ultimately I was left, once again, disappointed to hear that this is yet another steaming pile of Yorkshire’s offerings (wait, did that reference even make sense?).
So no, I’m not going to play Unleashed any time soon (unless I get for Christmas, which is likely considering my parents think I’ll gobble up any old Sonic merchandise). But I battening down the hatchet with you, ‘cos you seem to want to do the same, and frankly, I’m glad.
@Mirage: Good. I have no real qualms with optimists other than their insistence to pessimists that what they like is an absolute good, you know, so sorry if I sounded like I was harping on at you for being an optimist.
As for the man comment… Wut? Oh, I get cha. Right… Gee, sorry… Man, not my finest moment…
Now to finish off the other fights I’ve started.
Hi everybody 8/10 B+ or B-
Ktt’s Okami: No sweat, its totally understandable for every one to have their own opinion. I’m sorry for acting rude but it didn’t come to me until someone mentioned it. As for optimism, i try to keep my hopes for sonic since you do have a point that he’s been down sooo low, and for the man comment don’t sweat it either… i haven’t been having a good week at all , but its my problem so thats not an excuse for me to act like an ass to someone who doesn’t like the game.
OK, everyone…WILL SOMEONE JUST LIKE STOP LEAVING COMMENTS ALREADY?!! I mean in like everyone one of these posts there’s flaming, bad language, and just overall immature behavior OVER A VIDEO GAME. Sometimes I wonder if all those studies about video games causing violence…
@Kit’sOkami: I don’t even care what smart-alecky comments you leave anymore. I’m just gonna ignore what you have to say from now on. Try to comment back to me and you won’t get a response.
@Anyone else: Just…please…just shut up. I don’t care about what you have to say, good or bad. I’m sick of trying to find some cool Sonic website on the net and have it trashed up with all these harsh and rude comments. Can we PLEASE just stop discussing who’s better, and what game is this and that and just try to find a TINY SPECK of good in anything???
Geez, Hypo Power, why don’t you tell us how you really feel? ^^
Uh…if that’s a compliment…thanks…? If it’s not…sorry I offended you Soap. That wasn’t my intention.
you know, I feel that just by seeing this review’s score, and these ‘comments’ (*cough* arguments *cough*) that this may just be another flop. But I’m just fine with that… Well sure, I’ve died a little inside when I saw the failure that dared call its self “Sonic the Hedgehog.” But really guys, could Sonic Unleashed possibly be any worse *hears the shouts “of course it could hibber.”* Oh… Well I don’t think so, I still have hope for this game, and I will continueto have hope until it either falls apart in my hands, or explodes into the furious speed and action packed game that the children inside us have all been hoping for since we played Sonic Heroes. By the way, the Wii version isn’t a PORT of the 360/PS3 versions. It’s almost it’s own Sonic game, just with the same name, story, level themes, and music. It’s being designed by DIMPS, the people who made the Sonic Rush and Sonic Advance series (all of which I thought were great). Even Okami here said that Sonic Rush Adventure “exceeded his expectations” so obviously DIMPS knows how a Sonic game should be done. With the game so close to launch date, there’s boundto be lots of tension in the air, and people will freak out over it, but wether their freaking out over it being good or bad is their decision, and I respect that, which I am new at doing.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY HAS A LEVEL MIND!!! You have no idea how happy you have made me, hibber. Thank you for commenting and making my day a little brighter.
I know it’s not a “port”…but it is the weaker sister of the two. If the Wii version was godawful and got a 2/10 we’d STILL have no clue about the other versions. That was my point. The 360/PS3 version is the one that really matters as far as the future of the franchise. If the Wii version is good, great. But the other one…we still don’t know.
@ Hypo: you’re welcome ;D
@ Crazee: All I have is A Wii, so I don’t care about the other versions…ok, so mabey I do, but… you know, I forgot where I was going with this…
Yeah, I’m a true-blue Nintendo console fan (does that even make sense? O.o) and I only have a Wii. I do care a bit about the 360 version though, as I’m trying to convince my friend to get it. All he wants is Rock Band 2.
Gosh, what is with you people and cursing? There are other words to describe how you feel other than cursing. >_>
@kit’sokami: yea this crude language and disrespect towards each other was childous of the both of us so since we all have our own opinions i’d appreciate if we could just end our argument. it was just i got worked up cause u were sayin stuff and over exaggerating that we were sonic fans by saying it with foul language i admit that i said some bad things and hope that we can put this behind us and if u still have some hostility towards me it’s understandable and im sorry
I don’t have a 360(yet)…I’m buying the Wii version too. But it’s just logic…Dimps is developing a lot of the Wii Sonic Unleashed. Obviously, the game fully developed by Sonic Team reflects whether Sonic Team is turning a corner in developing the series from now on. It’s the more important version, and that score matters more.
I guess we’rre debating semantics…but I just don’t think that the Wii version can be the version that really tells us how much Sonic Team has changed in regards to Hashimoto’s design. He has nothing to do with it. So…it’s more important in regards to getting bigger and better games. As good as Dimps is…and they’ve come SO far since Sonic Pocket Adventure…their upside is probably Sonic Rush. Good, but not great. just like Sonic Unleashed Wii. But if Hashimoto gets it right, it could mean even better products later.
yea…. cursing had established itself pretty strong in this argument
