Game Informer: 6 Range All Around for Unleashed

360/PS3 Edition Gets Lower Score than Wii Edition

The prospect of Sonic Unleashed being the hedgehog’s next triumphant return are looking increasingly grim.

Between the three reviews seen thus far–the Daily Telegraph’s 5, IGN’s 7s, and Nintendo Power’s 8, the numbers have thus far been all over the place.  Now, we can add a 6, a 6.5, and a 6.75 into the foray, from Game Informer magazine.

The magazine and online portal appeared to review all versions of the game, albeit rather compactly.  GI’s Ben Reeves noted the daytime levels are fantastic but his words reconfirm that it’s only a portion of the experience:

Sega’s tech is impressive, as Sonic’s sprawling levels speed by without a hitch. Occasionally you’ll have to dial in a button-pressing event or quickly jump over to a branching path, but for the most part Sonic’s speedy levels are rollercoaster rides you cruise through. If these traditional Sonic levels were the only gameplay in this disc, I might have walked away amused. Sadly, they only make up about a third of the overall experience.

Interestingly enough, the XBOX/PS3 version received a 6 out of 10, with the Wii edition, even with less levels and less visual polish, getting a 6.5.  Reeves explains:

The Wii version has less annoying traits than the others and still retains all the usual mediocrity. The motion-control elements in the Werehog levels add an extra dimension to the action, and the hub worlds are entirely text-based and aren’t nearly as annoying. If you can stand the diminished graphics, the Wii version actually edges out the PS3 and 360 entries.

Second opinion writer Matt Hegelson gave all editions a 6.75, and with Reeves calling the Werehog platforming “frustrating,” he called the entire Werehog gameplay “botched.”
