Site: “We Missed the Mark”
It’s not Sonic Unleashed in the cross hairs here–not yet, anyway–but those who were infuriated at the site’s 4.5 out of 10 mark for the XBOX360 edition of the game and want the worldwide gaming authority to take a second look may have a glimmer of hope.
IGN US editors have publicly apologized over their review of Sega’s Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009, a PC title. While the UK component of IGN gave the title a 9.1 out of 10, the US site only gave it a 2 out of 10.
Here’s the apology given. We’ve bolded some key phrases that could give some serious credence to gripes many have given IGN and now Gamespot over poor scores for Sonic Unleashed.
We missed the mark — that’s the only way to explain why we’ve pulled the U.S. review of Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 off our site.
After seeing the community feedback and having more editors look at the title, we agree with the readers that our original review didn’t give Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 a fair shake. Unfortunately, our critical analysis of WWSM ’09 focused more on what the author wanted it to be rather than what the product actually was. We review games at IGN based on their own merits, and agree that it was unreasonable to compare WWSM ’09 with action-oriented sports titles like FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer. Because of the unfair comparison, we have deemed the review unacceptable and have removed it from the site.
We extend our sincerest apologies to both SEGA and our readers for the mistake and confusion. Look for an updated and more accurate relation of IGN’s view of WWSM ’09 sometime in the near future.
As with Hilary Goldstein in his review of Unleashed, there were calls for the reviewer to be fired over his take on WWSM ’09. With evidence on the surface that Goldstein may not have even played half of Unleashed, and now the appearance that the problem with IGN is not isolated, and you have to wonder if more corrections could follow. We will certainly follow this up if we get any new information.

Haha See, this is what I’m referring to. The American media is broken. It’s not just video gaming, by the way. It’s news media as well.
HIlary hasn’t even made it past 24% of Unleashed 360. I started later than he did, but I achieved 20 of 50 achievements faster than he did 12.
Hilary hated it. He’s allowed to have an opinion, jesus christ
Yeah, seriously, what’s wrong with an opinion? But I do think that he should’ve played it a bit more…that is, if that XBOX Live profile thingy is actually real.
If the review is professional, I don’t think a low score should be a problem.
@SLJCOAAATR: We don’t want his opinion we want facts. Whats good and whats bad thats all there is to it, he can post his opinions on his blog when he’s writing official reviews he should keep purely proffessional.
You are right everyone IS entitled to an opinion, I just don’t think an official review should be completely made out of it,a reviewer needs to look at all angles, and to be unbiased and unpredjudiced while doing it.
as a rule, game magazines are advertisements, promotional in nature. if a company gives you a sneak peek youre not going to bite the hand that feeds. .. without over-apologizing for it at the same time. advertisements are the magazines bread and butter. also, any fanboy would hate a negative review any way you slice it.
