Compares Sonic to a burnt out, washed-up rockstar
Ben “Yahtzee” Crowshaw has made a name for himself over the past year or two with his “Zero Punctuation” reviews for gaming site The Escapist. Every week he features a different game, and these video reviews are known for ripping in to games quite handily – think of it like a roast, if you will, where every flaw a game may contain is put on a pedestal and thoroughly laughed at. This week, Yahtzee sets his sights on Sonic Unleashed, and, well, let’s just say that his review is not for the faint of heart.

Though Yahtzee never says specifically which version he reviewed, he does use images of the Wii box art in the video, perhaps giving a clue.

Wow.
Harsh.
He doesint even beleave Sonic can be a good game anymore.
But, hey who can blame him. Sonic has been going though some rocky times.
But this isint gonna stop me from trying this game anyhow.
Uh what I cant understand a word hes saying. Im asuming its bad. Eh whatever skip you reviewers who think sonic team, who took 3 years , they think they suck who try to revive sonic and hes starting to come out of that hole he was in since 06.
He talks only shit instead of reviewing the game. What a “zero”. Lol.
Osnic, that’s why it’s called “Zero” Punctuation. Never even heard of this site before.
@ everyone who commented above:
The point of ZP is to bring out the worst of every game. He did with Brawl, Left 4 Dead, and Metal Gear Solid 4. He likes games, but he just does this to make jokes. He doesn’t hat every game. I’m also saying this so any fan-boys after me don’t bitch.
This really felt more like a joke review than anything. A lot of his more recent work has. He used to go into great detail about this and that and why he doesn’t like it. Used to be a lot longer too.
If you ask me, he has sorta gone downhill slightly.. :I
@ Nomad-san: That is true, I didn’t notice this time. I was really wishing for him to review Unleashed, but I’m a little disappointed in this one. He’s usually a lot funnier.
wow…..that was pretty harsh..even if it was some jokes..
I knew he was going to hate it from the moment he said that he was expecting to hate it, because if you go into Sonic Unleashed with that mentality, you’re going to run into a bunch of problems that aren’t there if you pick it up with the intention of having fun.
The only thing I’m annoyed about it him insinuating that a good Sonic game can no longer exist.
@Soap Scum
So, he does it to take the piss out of ‘em? Well, I can see why, it amazes me how many people can go about a game like its completely flawless, when…well…there’s really no such thing as a PERFECT game. They’re made by flawed beings after all. XD
Now I get what he was talking about although is he just joking and doesnt mean it
I think he was being harsh. I don’t know, I couldn’t understand him.
If that was a joke, then I’m not laughing because that made him sound like he couldn’t even play the game.
@Acell-san: Sometimes he does mean it. Like with…I think Left4Dead, he said he did like it, but sometimes it’s hard to tell.
You guys may not want to send angry e-mails to him. When he reviewed Brawl and got a ton of angry e-mails, he ridiculed them in the next episode. He makes great points about what he does, so doing it again would give him the pleasure of humiliating you guys.
I found it funny because it’s true. If you are browsing this site and didn’t find ZP this week “all that funny” it’s because you were upset he didn’t like it.
Oh I was worried for a moment but then I read the comments here and was relieved to realise Yahtzee was only joking and actually really enjoyed Sonic Unleashed. I think Yahtzee is only hiding his feelings because he is embarressed about his enjoyment at playing Sonic Unleashed. I’m sure if we all sent him an open e-mail about the matter we could cajole him into making his true feelings public and then everyone would finally realise what an amazing game Sonic Unleashed is. Peace out.
Yeah, I… really don’t think Yahtzee enjoyed Sonic Unleashed at all. Once every rare occasion he does a “positive” review about a game, and a lot of people seemed to think maybe he was getting too soft. A lot of Zero Punctuation fans see this Sonic review as a “return to form” because he hasn’t been this angry at a game in a really long time.
He reviewed the 360 version, not the Wii version.
The problems he mentioned are of the hub world and coin collecting, which the Wii version doesn’t have.
@ Guy Incognito: What the hell did I just say? He’s going to humiliate you…You know what? Go ahead. Let him degrade you on the internet. No one ever listens.
Guy Incognito? Hmm.. Why does that name sound familiar? Like right off of my msn list…??? Nevermind that–Yeah, this guy is harsh as a cactus with no space unpricked. This guy is a real toolbag. Oh well. MSM Reviews didn’t stop me from enjoying the game. I got to Dark Gaia, but wow. I almost finished the boss and I used up all of my lives on the last Sonic section.
I worry greatly. I remember the good games. Why fix that which is not broken? Adding these extra storylines may look good in theory but in practise, they’re not. The comparisons with a burnt-out, washed-up rockstar ring true. You’ll see Sonic on various reality TV shows in the not too distant future.
Who’s up for me being in charge of the new Sonic game?
party like a rockstar party like a rockstar
