Unleashed Frustration Mixed with Stadium Holiday Cheer
One of the most prominent figures in the Sonic fan community took the opportunity and space on the front page of the Sonic Stadium to curse Sega out under the guise of Holiday greetings on Christmas eve.
Having made clear previously his frustration regarding Sonic Unleashed throughout the onslaught of reviews and the Sonic community’s reaction to them, Slingerland, in his Holiday greetings, sarcastically takes pot shots at several community factions, and attempts to pre-empt any row that could develop over them by wishing “disillusioned people that think that I’m ‘misrepresenting the fanbase’ ” a Merry Christmas.
It’s a shame, then, that he closed his greeting with these words:
To SEGA… Fuck you (Whoops, I did it wrong).
Slingerland also sends greetings to, among others, those who cover the Sonic community, fan fiction authors, those who make fan characters, furries, and in particular the faction of the community that enjoys Sonic Unleashed:
To all the douchebags guys who vehemently defend Sonic Unleashed on message boards across the net in order to wash out nagging doubts in the back of their heads that they’re not having as much fun as they’ve convinced themselves to be having, thus forcefully justifying their purchase of a substandard effort to make a 3D Sonic game… Merry Christmas.
Slingerland makes clear in his greeting and has stated in the past that he’s needed a break from the Sonic community of late, and that includes his work on the upcoming SFG Sonic Nexus. Much of his disdain stems from overwhelmingly relentless defense of Sonic Unleashed by the fanbase, even in light of almost universal reviews that stem from mediocre to downright awful.
Slingerland also cites Boyz II Men in his holiday greeting, linking to the a capella rendition of Dreams Dreams. TSSZ News checked several different sources and, while Boyz II Men did release a Holiday album in 1993, they did not appear to have any role in this particular song.
Why is this news? Joking or not, it not only explains a lack of updates to Sonic Nexus of late, but it also Scrooged a Stadium front page filled with more joyous Holiday cheer, while giving the portion of Sonic fans unamused with Unleashed a big voice.
The previous day, Dreadknux shared a cornucopia of Sonic related gifts he received as part of the Holiday, including a card from Sega and a homemade model of Super Sonic. And later on Christmas eve, the Sonic Stadium released a Christmas themed fanmade animation short, dubbed Night of the Living Werehog.
The comments demonstrate how split the older generation of the Sonic community is with the new generation. While newer Sonic fans that grew up with the franchise in this decade have been much more tolerant of games like Unleashed and previous 3D Sonic outings, such tolerance is much harder to find among those who grew up with classic Sonic.
Previously, when news of Sonic and the Black Knight broke, both Slingerland and Dreadknux used the front page to vent and then defend their anger, even in the face of receiving multiple complaints about their comments.

Do you go around stalking Slingerland or something? He is entitled to have his own oppinion without someone making a full blown drama article about it. If I made an article on TSS everytime someone in the forum made a bad comment on a Sonic game I’d overload the front page and probably the site itself. People have a right to their own oppinion, such is life. This is not news, he explained the lack of Sonic Nexus and site related updates are due to everyone being an asshole about Sonic Unleashed to him and your articles that keep having a stab at him dont help.
It is newsworthy when one of the webmasters of the #1 Sonic fan site in the world tells Sega–the hand that helps feeds them by giving several staff members goodies and playtests and direct access to information–tells them to, well, “f” off. In a time not too long ago, that would have meant the feed being cut off.
It is also newsworthy in the sense that it’s the first major figure in the community dissenting with regard to Unleashed on such a large stage, something that hasn’t really been explored here directly yet–only through the spat over reviews.

Sigh, here we go again.
Well, that could have been done better. But…
To Slingerland, if you are reading this:
Remember that little fight we got into a while ago in that review section?
Well, I honestly respect what you think and feel about what was happening, but I was not trying to say you were wrong for what you thought about those reviews.
I know you are a respected figure around the Sonic Community, but the reason I got on your case was because I did not want you to get too much stress from the other fans’ reaction to the reviews. It was not that I did not agree on your thoughts, because I actually do.
And believe me; the other Sonic fans around here are ill tempered and overreactive.
But what I am trying say now is:
You did say that you want to take a break from the Sonic community, right?
Well, honestly, that will be the best thing for you to do. You should relax if you decide to do so. It would help you relax and get away from the craziness of this community.
So, if you ultimately decide to take a break from us, please do. I can assure you that you would not regret it.
Whatever you’ll do is ultimately up to you, but whatever happens, play it safe, You need it.
From,
Sonication.
The entire Sonic fanbase is split. Even among those of us who remember the early 90s when Sonic was said by most everyone to rival Mario, (Mario couldn’t touch Sonic, I’d say) we all have our different views about what makes a Sonic game the most fun, especially when we’re talking about 3D Sonic. The way I see it, if you stand for SA1 or 2, you’re on the same level as folks who stand for Unleashed. Because Unleashed really is a SA4 if you think about it seriously.
Wow…
He certainly likes to goes out on a high note.
God, I hate this community…
If you think you’re cute trying to draw some contradiction with “misrepresentation” and my own personal opinion on SEGA, Tristan, you’re not. I represent me. That has been established enough already. If Dread didn’t want it going out to the front page, he has the option to edit it out.
“Night of the Warhog” is making fun of SEGA, too.
Oh, and Boys II Men? Yeah, it’s fun perpetuating the myth. Marlon Saunders, Gabriel Morris and Issa Clemon sang the a capella verison.
@Sonication: I took my break. It’s time to get back to work for me while I have free time on winter break. Once I hit the books again in mid-January, free time slips away.
I shouldn’t laugh but I am roaring with laughter. Classic Sonic can not be argued with. Those who enjoyed the original games lust for a time past. Would the assumed (Sega) listen to a bunch of twentysomethings who yearn for 8/16bit games or would they rather dazzle a new generation with twinkly 3D graphics and an amazing soundtrack? Classic Sonic is gone. Dealt with. End of.
Boys II men? Tres lame! Tres lame! Sacre bleu, mon frere! Nice touch though!
Slingerland, too right free time slips away. Keep up the good work though! Enjoy the rest of the holidays
While I personally liked Sonic Unleashed myself (No, I’m not just washing out the hate. I don’t agree with the lower scores, like IGNs and Gamespots, but I do agree with the scores that are like 6s and 7s) I agree with the statement. The game could have and should have been a lot better than it was, yet because Sega once again thinks that the padding is fun, the game is kinda ruined.
@ Andrew Chantler: while Classic Sonic may be dead, that’s no excuse for releasing this bull shit. No one asked for werehogs or guns or swords or physic powers. Not one person. Sonic is about platforming and speed. Doesn’t matter if it’s a classic game or not, that’s what Sonic’s about, and when you fuck up that formula by adding beat-em-ups and shit then that ruins games.
Dazzle the people with your pretty graphics and soundtrack if you want, but Mario Galaxy did that too and yet that game wins in the public because it’s a fucking Mario game. I’m not talking about the fact that it’s just Mario on the box (Although that helps), rather the game delivers what the fans want, Mario in all his glory. If Sonic Unleashed and any other Sonic game made since Sonic Adventure oh say, a full out Sonic game, I’m sure it would be well recieved as well. Ever wonder why reviewers love Sonic Rush and Sonic and Sonic and the Secret Rings? Because when it all comes down to it those are Sonic games. Only reason those didn’t get perfect scores was because of a couple of bad choices, but they were pretty good scores that’s for sure.
@Slingerland: Okay then. I don’t blame you for what’s happening. Even I am disappointed with my own fellow Sonic fans.
BTW, I heard you’re working on a fangame called Sonic Nexus. I am a big fan of Sonic fan games myself. I am excited to play the full version myself.
I would ask you for more details on your project, but I’d rather be patient and let you take your time, since I don’t want to get at risk of irritating you about your project, or get annoying about it.
But still, Sonic Unleashed was a good game but aside from IGN and Gamespot, the 6s are 7s the game got are what it deserves.
I hope that Sega can pull off a better Sonic game next time.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinions. I don’t get randomly cussing out people who like the game.
Dear Slingerland,
Deal with it
Wow, are you guys still arguing over this? Don’t you think it’s enough? Some people liked it, some people didn’t, same goes for every game ever released. It’s really childish on both your parts to get into a huge war over something so simple as a game. Also, I laughed at how you quoted Yahtzee Slingerland. I’ve been a part of the Sonic fandom since the beginning too, from Sonic 1. I like to play through every Sonic game as if I’ve never played one before so I can find new things to like about it. This is why people call the Sonic fandom so batshit crazy, both sides are insane about it by taking Sonic WAY too seriously.
It is all pointless. Crying over a freaking video game is stupid, I don’t care if you are on Sonic Unleashed side or against it.
Slingerland is the bees knees
It’s called an Unpleasable fanbase, guys! Come on!
I just like fuckin’ around. Is that too much to ask for? Am I allowed to fuck around without media coverage?
@sugar plz: Represent.
@Slingerland: Of course you’re allowed to do this! Not only is this the internet, this is America! I may not be correct, but you are most likely living in the states; a.k.a. a place where freedom of speech and criticism is allowed.
For these reasons, I’d rather respect your opinion than to argue with you.
I don’t see why everyone else can’t do the same.
Now that I said that, I am ashamed to be in a fanbase where very few people are sane!
Wow. Someone doesn’t know what a joke is.
Christenmas! Hit wud nae be Christenmas wi’out youse fightin’!
“Not only is this the internet, this is America!”
Beautiful man. Just beautiful.
The Sonic community makes my eye’s rain.
Isn’t Sonic that blue hedgehog that use to run really fast? Yeah, he was a really serious character huh? Set in a very serious and dark universe with serious enemies and seriously serious gameplay.
Slow news day? Again?
“I just like fuckin’ around. Is that too much to ask for? Am I allowed to fuck around without media coverage?”
Considering you don’t give us that same privilege…
Yes.
It is a bit too much to ask.
