Fans Remaking Sonic Adventure 2 in HD

Stills and Video of Homegrown Mod

For most in Sonic fandom, Sonic Adventure 2 holds a very special place in hearts and minds.  Upon its release in 2001, the gaming media held it in high regard.  Even today some fans consider it the best 3D Sonic to date.  But so far, the game hasn’t seen the light of day on an HD console, with true HD graphics.

That’s why it’s hard to ignore the work of a group of Sonic Retro forumers who, just under two weeks ago, made their efforts to “remake” SA2 with HD graphics and textures public.  The project was originally started by forum members Jeztac and Dude.

An early build of the project was released the first week of January, and it included a high resolution Sonic, the Green Hill Zone, and other trinkets.  Take a look at the video below:

Since the release, other Retro forumers, including Gabbit, are putting in efforts toward the project.  The fruits of their labor have thus far resulted in revamps for City Escape, Sky Rail, Green Forest, and various cutscenes.  We’ve provided some screenshots of what has been released below.

If you want to keep tabs of development on Sonic Adventure 2 HD, you can head over to the Sonic Retro thread.  There, you will find a download link to the mod.  At present you need the nullDC Dreamcast emulator to enjoy the mod, though those behind the project are working to change that.  We’ll continue to follow the progress of this ambitious endavor.
