Stills and Video of Homegrown Mod
For most in Sonic fandom, Sonic Adventure 2 holds a very special place in hearts and minds. Upon its release in 2001, the gaming media held it in high regard. Even today some fans consider it the best 3D Sonic to date. But so far, the game hasn’t seen the light of day on an HD console, with true HD graphics.
That’s why it’s hard to ignore the work of a group of Sonic Retro forumers who, just under two weeks ago, made their efforts to “remake” SA2 with HD graphics and textures public. The project was originally started by forum members Jeztac and Dude.
An early build of the project was released the first week of January, and it included a high resolution Sonic, the Green Hill Zone, and other trinkets. Take a look at the video below:
Since the release, other Retro forumers, including Gabbit, are putting in efforts toward the project. The fruits of their labor have thus far resulted in revamps for City Escape, Sky Rail, Green Forest, and various cutscenes. We’ve provided some screenshots of what has been released below.
If you want to keep tabs of development on Sonic Adventure 2 HD, you can head over to the Sonic Retro thread. There, you will find a download link to the mod. At present you need the nullDC Dreamcast emulator to enjoy the mod, though those behind the project are working to change that. We’ll continue to follow the progress of this ambitious endavor.

Are they accepting voice actors at this momment? I’d like to pitch in as the voice of Shadow(Considering my voice over of Shadow in Shadow’s Complaints and the Motormouths Unleashed section of 8 presents).
What? Why would they redub the game? That’d be unnecessary.
Score! Make sure you fix ALL THE BUGS!!!
I don’t think that the plan is to fix any bugs, just to revamp the game in HD. The last time I played through SA2:B, I don’t remember there being any “bugs” or at the least, things that would make the gameplay more difficult than it was intended to. Although, I would love them to revamp the grinding systems. It’s a lot more fun to grind when you don’t have to manually JUMP on the rail that you need to go on next in every circumstance and run the risk of overshooting it and dying. That’s why I’m not going to be getting any A-ranks in Sonic and Shadow’s “Final” ARK levels anytime soon.
Make Sonic faster!!!
I… Honestly cannot see the difference. It just looks like regular ol’ SA2 to me.
I agree with you, Okami-san. They’re a little shinier, that’s it.
Also, why re-dub? Why? Oh, and what the hell is wrong with “Live And Learn” in the video? It sounds awkward.
I agree with the redub bit. why do it? The game has some of the best voice acting IMO…i don’t see any reasons to “fix” it.
That aside, i could see some of the quality difference from its original DC counterpart…lookin’ good!
@Sonikku Master: …im tired of hearing that from fans, really. No offense, but speed ant everything its hyped up to be. Thats one of the top reasons why i love SA and SA2 so much- it proves ya don’t need such high speeds in a sonic game in order for it to be FUN.
Platforming > Speed, in my personal tastes.
I hate this stupid rumor that Sonic’s all about speed, his a plat-former like Mario. Sonic games should plat-forming + speed= Best 3D Sonic game. That’s what the formula should be.
Also, why fix something that’s not broken.
@Kits’Okami: I agree. This does look graphically better, but will this be any better than the original and the Gamecube version? No way!
And I don’t think redubbing Sonic and co would make a bigger difference.
@udx: 8 Presents? Man, that flash was funny!
Level design + hold right = speed.
Not: Hold Right + moar rite x B button = SPEED MOTHERFUCKER

Onto the hack, uhm, yeah. Barely any difference for me. The textures look a bit nicer, but that’s about it. I was kinda hoping that they’d edit the models to smooth out the polygons or something. If that’s even possible.
If they do redub this (where does it say they will?) then I won’t even bother with it. As mentioned, the texture update isn’t a huge thing anyway, and I love the voice acting in the original game. The sacrifice wouldn’t be worth it IMO.
Yeah really, why mess with success?
Because fans are idiots Nomad-san. Go to my dA page and I’ll show you. Leave a comment or note or something.
You may have seen it.
LOL, “more addictive than smoking”. Anyway, this could be neat and all, but right now it’s nothing special to behold since it’s still a WIP.
SA2 doesn’t really hold any special place in my heart. Being an oldschool Sonic fan, I’d have to say Sonic Heroes holds that spot as the finest 3D Sonic game. By far.
Yeah, I don’t really see a difference either … better off spending manhours on a different Sonic project (making Sonic 06 fun).
I don’t see how this game could hold a special place in any Sonic fan’s heart considering how it’s mediocre at best and just plain ****ty the majority of the time, hell, it really isn’t even a Sonic game period, it doesn’t look, play or sound anything like a sonic game.
I like how Green Forest Looks with the textures, but everything else looks the same or complete crap.
It looks exactly the same to me. Somebody point out some changes.
The video’s not working?
