OPM UK: Chip Worst New Character of 2008

Game Considered one of Biggest Disappointments
Move over, Omochao.
Sonic’s sidekick in Unleashed, Chip, was named by the UK’s Official Playstation Magazine as the worst new character introduced in 2008. That’s according to Sonic Stadium staffer Shadtzer (say that three times fast,) who picked up the most recent issue of OPM.
Here’s a quick blurb of OPM’s rationale for giving Chip the dubious honor:
…for all the bile Sonic Unleashed triggered in our bellies, we reserved the purest rage for our spiky (ex-)friend’s latest sidekick, Chip: a purple douche who loves ice cream, trots out an endless stream of banality and looks like a flying Chihuahua. Which is kind of fitting given that we’d rather let a lap dog gnaw on our own undercarriage than play the big bag of balls that was Unleashed ever again.
That quote also fits in well with a second “achievement” Sonic Unleashed as a whole gained from OPM, being one of their biggest disappointments of 2008. The game joined Haze, Army of Two, and Need for Speed: Undercover in the category. Noteworthy about that last game–Electronic Arts has decided to give the Need for Speed franchise a break.
Presently, the Metacritic score for Sonic Unleashed sits at 54 for the PS3 edition, and 60 for the XBOX360 edition. Both the PS2 and Wii editions share a 66 ranking.

Booooooooooooo. Chip might of not been the character that people were expecting, but he was a lot better, than say, the aforementioned Omochao. He’s a lot better than all of these OH TOO SERIOUS characters we’ve been getting for sometime…although he does have his own past to deal with, we don’t know about it until later in the game. And unlike the last character with amnesia, it gets resolved in the course of one game instead of two!
And I don’t see any flying Chihuahuas with their own giant shrine mecha. If you did see that one coming, well…good on ya.

I hate OPM UK. There is lot of idiots. Chip is not the worst character of 2008. I like Chip. Sonic Unleashed is one of the worst games in 2008? Nice joke.

Chip was cute and funny, but I’m afraid that I agree with these guys. I mean, his cuteness and funniness are the only things going for him.

OH MY FUCKING GOD, in the LAST mainstream game people hated elise beacuse she was anoying, useless ,had a forbbiden love with the main character and was just plain hated.
Chip on the other hand serves a purpose, hes less annoying, and provides some comic relif, GOD FORBID theres some humor in a sonic game you half ass biased peices of shit!!!!
These assholes just hate the fact that its a good sonic game so there raping it as much as possible.
Chip’s better than I was expecting, but, all-in-all, he was still a pretty crappy character. Of course, that’s just my opinion. A fan, who has a mind of a normal person, not *clears throat* a pyscho manic serial rapist who believes this is all real, and completely obsess’, known as “Fanboys/girls” Yeah…TSSZ is swarming with those. A few exceptions go to, Sonication, General Zero, Kits, Myself, Fairfieldfencer, Tristan, and a few others. I only come here, cause it’s a fast, and reliable source. *Leaves*
Alright Chip sucks but I don’t see why they hate this game so much. Had some of it….

Worst? I’d have to disagree. While Chip was merely a temp character, he was likable and funny. It very much reminded me of the goofiness of Daxter from the Jak franchise.
I thought that werehog would be there? Oh well anything that’s butt ugly and smashes things is spared… Kind of had a feeling that was going to happen with those guys and there potty mouth humor. So don’t go insane over it I would even worry.

Well, I guess these guys have to fill their shitty magazine with something. That must be pretty tough, considering that the PS3 was (and still is) the largest disappointment of all current consoles.
And also: Why should anyone care about the metacritic score. The weighted average of biased misinformation isn’t necessarly a smoothed and balanced score closer to the “truth” than the individual scores, it can just as well remain biased misinformation. Not to mention the fact that representing an entire game by a single percentage value (or letter or star rating or whatever) is a totally idiotic idea in the first place.
OPM? They’re just as bad as the US ones.
I actually liked Chip. He was pretty cool and brought some humor to the game, because Professor Pickle can only do so much.

I can’t help but think…is this what Crash fans are going through? Like, saying Crash should “retire” and they’re defending it?
My brother told me that Sonic has more age and a better fanbase than Crash or something…I am really thinking deep.

To say that they have a bias against Sonic is just plain wron- no- wait. Actually.

Think about it, we’ve been subjected to a decade of crappy/sub-standard games, only to be finally met with a middle of the road/average game? Like it or not, HALF a game where you play as Sonic with something that RESEMBLES his traditional gameplay, isn’t something to jump up and down about. If anything, it makes you furious that they even call it a ‘Sonic’ game, when it’s really a ‘Sonic and Gimmick of the Month’ game. (Now we could get into the particulars about devolpment and how ‘Sonic Team has to get the game out by X time’. But it’s kind of irrelevant here.)
So of course you’d be a little bias against Sonic after all that BS. It’s only natural. We can’t all play ONE semi-good game and be all rainbows and loli-pops. It’s going to take time for some of us to regain trust. If that does indeed happen.
And yeah sure, the whole ‘Chip being the worst character of ’08′ thing is a little over-blown.

There was a very short time where I was upset by all the negative shit and just said “Fuck Sonic. He can burn in hell for all I care.”
But then, the next morning, it went away. I guess a little rage had to come out.
I don’t care for Chip at all, but Sonic Unleashed wasn’t altogether bad.

if i remember corectly, adventure 1 and 2 was great, heroes was above average,shadow the hedgehog was hated by critics but loved by fans, rush 1 and 2 were great, rivals 1 and 2 were average, sonic next gen SUCKED, secret rings was above average, and unleashed was above average.
so i dont know what the hell you guys are talking about, when people say sonic sucks there only thinking about ONE game, thats it.
Thats why in EVERY sonic review on EVERY gaming website, it alwayso opens like this
“sonic started on the genesis and his games were great, but for the last decade sonic has been getting worse and worse, will this game break his string of bad games”
uhh news flash i seem to recall ONE FREAKING GAME that sucked.
How do you get angry at someone who didn’t do anything? Chip was cute, and I could see how some would find him annoying too. However, in the long run, he really didn’t do anything to deserve praise OR damnation. Why are reviewers and stuff taking such HUGE efforts to bash on this game? Was it super awesome best game evarrr? no. Was it a substandard piece of dog crap? also no. It was just average with some pretty fun parts. Chill Review dudes…it’s just a game.

I still don’t get wat was wrong with unleashed…. it was so much fun! (looks confused) and chip was probably my fav new character eva introduced to sonic (excluding shadow of course).
