Sega Confirms Information to EDGE
If you want a real indicator as to how well Sonic Unleashed and some of Sega’s other top titles have really fared in recent months versus company expectations, this may be the first true barometer.
An IGN report cites sources inside Sega of America who claim thirty people were laid off at the company today. A Sega representative confirmed the news to EDGE Online. We do not know which department suffered the brunt or if any well known names were part of the cuts. The Sega representative tells EDGE the bad economy is to blame, and it’s important to note that thirty pales in comparison to the rounds of layoffs at Electronic Arts totaling more than 1,000, and Sony layoffs expected to hit well over 10,000.
How this will impact upcoming Sega releases is not known right now.
Sega stock closed domestically at $2.52 a share yesterday, but at press time the Japanese stock of Sega Sammy holdings is up nearly 8 percent on the news, to ¥1004 a share.
We do not know if similar layoffs will be held at Sega’s Japanese or European division, but both areas certainly bear watching–it may only be a matter of time. Stay with TSSZ News as we keep on top of the turbulence within Sega, as we are expecting updates on the story shortly.
