Lawsuit Alleged Licensing Problems
A judge has upheld a lower court ruling that found the NFL Players Association did not compensate retired NFL players for the use of their likenesses in EA Sports’s Madden series of games, among other things.
The NFLPA fought the original decision, which awarded $7.1 million in statuatory damages and an additional $21 million in punitive damages. They argued current licensing agreements only apply to active NFL players. A judge disagreed.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of more than two thousand retired players. EA Sports was not a defendant in the proceedings.
