What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas
A video has been leaked on to the internet, with no more information than its title gives away: “Dead Rising 2?”. Recorded using a handheld camera, the video apparently gives us a shaky look at what is presumably an upcoming trailer for the still-not-officially-announced game. Briefly recapping the events of the first game, the trailer reveals the newest location of Dead Rising 2 to be none other than neon-lit Las Vegas, as zombies are shown milling around slot machines and across velvet carpets.
In 2006, the original Dead Rising put players in the shoes of Frank West, a rough-and-tumble photojournalist who deliberately thrusts himself in to a town gripped by a zombie plague in the hopes of securing the ultimate scoop. Camping out at the mall, players were treated to the most literal definition of “Survival Horror” yet concieved, as Frank was given 72 hours to do whatever it took to survive. Players had to scavenge for food, rescue survivors, and contend with psychopaths who had lost their sanity amidst the zombie outbreak. Depending on their overall performance in the mall, the player would recieve one of several different endings.
In the October 2008 edition of Famitsu Magazine, Keiji Inafune confirmed that sequels to Dead Rising and Lost Planet were in development and were expected to release on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles. In November 2008, rumors arose that Canadian developer Blue Castle Studios was handling Dead Rising 2, though these were never confirmed (or denied) by Capcom. Blue Castle Studios is best known for their fantasy baseball game The Bigs, as well as their more simulation-heavy MLB Front Office Manager.
Speaking personally, this so-called leaked trailer has me a little bit suspicious – though made to look like it was recorded through a camcorder, there are moments where audio for it appears to have been dubbed over the video in post production. That being said, the rest of the content contained in the footage definitely is of quality; hoaxing something like this would take quite a bit of skill (especially considering it would seem that Frank West himself has new lines of dialog that he speaks during it). If not a hoax, I myself would definitely lean more towards viral marketing stunt.
