First Comments on 2D Sonic Rumors Inside
As Saturday evening went on, crowds continued to pour in, and Sega zombies were giving away comics and hugs. It remained a bit hectic, but another Sega of America representative still took time out of his schedule to give a lengthy interview.
This one-on-one with Denny Chiu has more a focus on Sega’s presence at the New York Comic Con, and how the company is trying to take a more mature approach to Nintendo Wii titles. There are also some tidbits regarding House of the Dead: Overkill if you’re a fan–as my mother is, you will soon find out. I also asked Chiu about his personal experiences gearing up for the show as a Sega employee, and I discuss the recent rumors surrounding a possible 2D Sonic in the pipeline, and for the first time, we have some comment on the matter from another Sega employee. I also ask him his personal opinion of Sonic having a sword, among other matters regarding Sonic and the Black Knight.
The uncut interview is below. On Monday morning, I’ll have an interview with the managing editor of Archie Comics regarding the long running Sonic comics, and that will include new, exclusive details on Sonic #200 that you won’t find anywhere else.

I can’t wait for Black Knight and MadWorld.
Finally Sega speaks out against the fansboys who want nothing but old Sonic THANK YOU
Keydown: Wha? Where?!
Keydown: It’s not that they’re trying new ideas that makes me mad, it’s that they won’t even take the time to find a basic formula before they start off with the bizarre ideas. And when they get close, they just go and change it.
That and the ideas they have made have been absolutely stupid. Sorry, there is no denying that the concept of Sonic with a sword or Sonic turning into a werewolf is a very good idea. I don’t care how well they’re executed. It makes no fucking sense for Sonic.
PJMan: LOL! And you wrote the rules for making a Sonic game and expect Sega to abide by them?
Sonication: Start at 8 15
815 WAAAAAAAAT
Do not intentionally ay that number to me again, young man. *Pulls out wooden spanker*
Soul: 815
@ 8:15, why not, it works for Mario and nearly every other major franchise.
Finally! Someone that agrees with me. Sonic couldn’t have been just 2D like the old days because it would get boring. So they bring in new stuff to make it fun. While all of you are like “We want the old 2D Sonic back!” or “They should just make 2D Sonic.” Seriously. I’ve played classic Sonic and it’s really fun. But it was just speed. Now they incorporate speed with other mechanics to make fun. So all of you going”We want the old 2D Sonic back!” or “They should just make 2D Sonic.” Drop it! It’s probably not gonna happen.
I think more Sonic Fans should focus on becoming SEGA fans in general… try other Sega classic IPs.
HAHA EAT SHIT WENTOS
I have got to comment on this.
SEGA, sometimes INNOVATION is NOT THE ANSWER! You’ve been innovative with Sonic since SONIC 3D BLAST! STOP IT!
You haven’t rehashed Sonic’s old gameplay yet! You only went with that style of play from about 1991 to, I don’t know, let’s just say 1994, since that’s when Sonic & Knuckles released. 3 YEARS SEGA! AND HOW OLD IS SONIC? YOU’VE BEEN “INNOVATIVE” WITH SONIC FOR OVER 10 YEARS!
This “innovation” word needs to die in the gaming industry. Some developers think that it’s 100% necessary in order to survive .. and that is so not the case. A real classicish Sonic game would be an INSTANT sell. You’ve got to be kidding me, how do we get this message to reach to SEGA?
Pray Wentos is right.
can somebody type up what he said for me as thses computers haven`t got sound! plz espesally this 8:15 part!
plz…
@SonicFTW: I think you’re a little confused.
The old Sonics used the speed and “attitude” as gimmicks to what was otherwise a bunch of average platformers. It’s the modern Sonics that’s all about the WHOASPEED.
Play through Sonic 1-Knuckles again, compare them to Sonic Unleashed and then tell me that the classics were just about speed.
As for SEGA speaking out against the classic fans, well Fuck You too, assholes
2/3 strikes Wentos, 1 more, and your a fake.
I resent that!
I just want them to develop the existing characters more. Even Sonic, Tails, and Eggman don’t have back stories (or full back stories, in Tails’ case) yet. Who trained Knux to fight? In older writings it claims he’s a master of martial arts. Where the fook did Amy suddenly show up from? Blaze is a princess? Of what? We’ve seen no kingdom or subjects to speak of. We need to see some more development!
@Kits `Okami: omg! Did SEGA tell the classic fans to fuck off?
omg! LOL ^_^ they finally told em! HA! COULD SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT THEY SAID
plz… i haven`t got sound!
Kits’:I want you to name you favorite Sonic games.
i`m sick of the pulblic winging on and fucking on! Sonic IS Sonic! What game do ya want? Run…….. 2D……. “back on roots” ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!
i donno about this though…
sorry bad mood
LOLZ
A complete 2.5D Sonic game? (jawdrop) BEST IDEA EVER! I’d be really happy if Sega did that!
soooo… thats what “this new 2D sonic” could be! A FULL 2.5D SONIC ACTION GAME!!!! AWSOME!!!! I hope they do make it! It`ll sell mills! probabliy even to sonic haters! (IGN exsample)
also i`d agree with sega about “gotta try new stuff” bits
but i hope to god this 2.5D game gets made
