Developing: Origins of Characters, Mobius Revealed
Did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog was born in Hardly, Nebraska? And that his original name was Sonny?
That’s what Sega of America wanted you to believe in 1991, at least, according to recently revealed documents as part of the “Sonic Bible,” a deep character analysis of Sonic the Hedgehog written by the company prior to the original game’s release. It’s a major find that is sure to please veteran Sonic fans, and perhaps give new generation fans a glimpse into what was in the 2D era.
Several drafts of the bible were released minutes ago by Australian Sonic Retro forum member Nemesis, and they go into incredible detail as to the origins of Sonic–at some points directly contradicting plot points set out by Sega of Japan. According to Nemesis:
The Sonic Bible was an internal document created by SOA to provide a localised history and overall philosophy for Sonic and the Sonic universe. It is apparently not based on the Japanese history.
Many of the basic canons are there–Sonic is meant to be cool and have attitude, and Chaos Emeralds are involved in some of the writing. But, judging from the documents, Sega of America spent a lot of time establishing Sonic as a character in much the same way that characters in movies and theater are established by script writers. In this case, among other things, one draft reveals Sonic to have a poor upbringing in the heartland of America early in the 21st century, with the original name of Sonny. He had five sisters, and his father died just a few days after birth in a pool of toxic waste. “They are a poor, but happy family,” the draft notes.
But other drafts reveal origins regarding the planet Mobius, which was used as the stage for the early Saturday Morning Sonic cartoons, and the early Archie Sonic comics. Those drafts also show that Sonic and Dr. Ovi Kintobor were at one point friends–with Kintobor even making Sonic’s special speedy red sneakers–until he turned against the hedgehog, became Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and waged war on the planet. Other drafts almost completely alter this particular storyline.
Some drafts go into detail about the zones in the original Sonic. Of note from those descriptions is that the Special Stages were originally referred to as the Warps of Confusion.
That’s just a small taste of the 70 pages that’s been released thus far as part of the bible. In addition, much of the drafts give direction on protecting the Sonic brand, and what can and can’t be done with Sonic’s name, and the IP itself. One section on art direction even explains to the exact detail how to draw Sonic and Robotnik. Many in the Sonic research community plan to take a good look at all the pages, and Nemesis promises more material is on the way.
TSSZ News will continue to cover the release of the Sonic Bible drafts, and any noteworthy information they may contain. We still have plenty of information to go through among the documents that have already been released, and there’s more on the way.

s-sonic b-bible………..why that name why not sonic biography, before i read this I thought it was something that was made by some nutcase of a fan
Well, this was weird news.
Why did they use bible? O.O I thought it was reffering to the bible
OK…….Now i seen everything…If Sonic gets a religion…i swear..
Bible, Biography, History, Encyclopedia… all interchangable as far as I’m concerned.
Hahaha, I get it. ‘Genesis’. ‘Sonic Bible’.
Wow. I have to read this… XD
0_0… F—–**k… I’ve gotta read this!
if sonic does get devloped into a religion a will have lost all respect for the human race.
well good thing this is not, it is a peice of interesting news nontheless, hope we get some scans soon (lol, sonic born in nebraska)
Just read through them… Damn… Awesome, totally awesome. As a writer and artist, this is EXACTLY what I need if I ever wanted to do anything Sonic-related.
Fascinating…
A “bible” is a document frequently created for any large scale creative endevour ranging from TV series to video games. You see, with multiple people (and even companies) involved in creating something, a central document is needed that can set out all the basics, the facts, the background, universe information, important stuff and the essential vision of the project so that even with different people making different things, everything stays consistent and important information is communicated.
Given how disjointed an different the many Sonic universes are, I’m surprised a bible on Sonic ever existed in the first place. Then again, a lot of subtle details seem to pop up in multiple continuities without a clear rational explanation, so maybe this bible worked in the background and can now explain these curious consistencies. I’m certain I’ve heard the “Warps of Confusion” phrase before, and a quick Google search indicates that it was used in the UK Sonic the Hedgehog adventure gamebooks.
I wonder if they went with the Sonny one, if Sonic’s personality would be different; not so “cool” and stuff, just a different personality, maybe like Shadow’s, trying to find out about his past, and how his father died. Just not so stereotypically badass as Shadow.
Sonic is a religon now.
I thought Mario was gonna get one first.
Just so I was clear, “bible” is common terminology for a major document used to keep a creative enterprise consistent. It’s often used in Sci Fi TV shows to keep track of the in universe history, as well as RPGs that have a lot of backstory and may also have multiple sequels.
Heck, even Frasier has a bible.
Amazing. SImply Amazing
A useless bible, but I’m glad I know about it. I may read it just to see what weird things it has to say about Sonic.
Wow, he had five sisters?! HUGE FAMILY! They should use some of this stuff though.
Does that Show..umm “Happy days” have a bible too…according to family guy?
SA2 FOR PC!!!

Ah geez… So many people confused about the name…
A bible doesn’t JUST refer to a religious book. It’s a term used by writers.
“A bible for writers is a reference document used for information on a story’s characters, settings and other elements. ”
And there you have it.
Anyway, this sounds like an interesting read. I’ll check it out.
PS: Sonikku Master, isn’t advertising a petition completely unrelated to this topic… you know, spam?
The Sonic Bible is nothing but a chronicle of lies!
The true literal word of the Hedgehog can only be found in the Sonic Qur’an!
Islam is the light!
wow you aint lying ether!!! I remember the last bits from stay sonic so its all true.
Damn, that shit is awesome !
Really interesting to read !
They should have released this in Britain =/
Holy crap, that dude came up with the name Ivo Robotnik? Awesome !
Lol at the hard-boiled egg… DX
I’ll be off reading this now.
Don’t do it, Soul! Don’t do it, man! You’re a madman!
I think we should make a Sonic game on this Sonic book, it might actually be good.
Great so now it’s called a religious book because it was written from the past. Sonic encyclopedia will be more like it.
Sonic and Dr. Ovi Kintobor were at one point friends–with Kintobor even making Sonic’s special speedy red sneakers–until he turned against the hedgehog, became Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and waged war on the planet.
ok WTF so now Dr. Eggman is turning into a ally now in many games like he isnt the villian we know since Sonic 1/2/3 like he started become a ally in SA2 and we cant blame him for that because they would have died but since Sonic Heroes Shadow the Hedgehog Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood you know what i mean the fact is there over doing and now he is turning into a ally again i just find this wrong -_-
Ok, I’ve read it, and I can’t believe half of it. Eggman being the way he was because his DNA was mixed with that of a rotten egg? Farfetched, if you ask me.
How cam Robotnik be Kintobor if Robotnik is the Grandson of Gerald Robotnik, PARADOX!!!
Then there’s the fact that whenever Egghead actually gets all the emeralds, he doesn’t break the gray/white one. I’ll have to rescind my previous comment.
