Return Surmised as Part of Sonic Unleashed 2
Sega may have to again get into damage control mode.
Speaking to Videogamer.com, Tetsu Katano, the director for Sonic and the Black Knight, fielded a few questions about Sonic the Werehog, and the alter-ego’s appearance in Sonic Unleashed. The concept and mechanics of the Werehog were widely panned by the gaming press, and only received slightly better by Sonic fans.
Videogamer.com leads into the Werehog with the question of whether creating him was a mistake. Mr. Katano notes the Sonic Team was pressed for time when making the game:
In principle, I think that the users are always right. They’re the ones paying the money and playing the games. If they don’t enjoy it, they’re not going to buy it. I don’t think that producing the Werehog was a mistake per se, but there were a lot of things we could have done better if we had more time and resources.
But it’s the next question from Videogamer.com that has so many Werehog haters scared. When asked about improvements to the Werehog and, point blank, whether he will return, Mr. Katano confirmed he’ll be back, only to dance around the issue as he continued to speak:
For the improvements, I can’t think of anything right now off the top of my head. If I think of any ideas then Sonic Unleashed 2 will be the time for that, so I don’t really have an answer for that. But you will see the Werehog again. I like Secret Rings very much, but when it came to making (Sonic and the Black Knight) we chose to do something different. All the good things about Secret Rings belong to that specific game. So in the same way, unless we’re going to make Sonic Unleashed 2 you might not see him again. But if we are going to make it, you might see him again. It’s a possibility.
The mere fact that Mr. Katano is speaking about the Werehog may indicate something is up. But keep in mind that the Werehog’s next appearance could be in something as minor as the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, wheremuch of the current Sonic cast of characters will be used. Murmurs of the next Sonic Unleashed-esque title have been thrown about for a while now, but with assurances that the Werehog would be absent.

I actually liked the Werehog, but given the response, I think it would be a stupid move. Honestly, to even CONSIDER bringing him back just makes him seem oblivious to the response. Even if they were to improve the Werehog, I doubt anyone who disliked it in the original will buy Unleashed 2.

I don’t mind Sonic’s alter-ego appearing again, as long as he appears only in a spin-off or a Sega crossover game (ie Sonic Riders 3, M&S at the Winter Games, or a Sega Superstars Sequel.) Agree?

Seriously, I’d be fine with him as an optional unlockable for a spin-off (Albeit, peeved that he replaced someone alot cooloer.)
But, if he were to appear as a mandatory character in a main series game? No. Hell no.

I think it’s ood that they don’t just forget Mr Monster guy. I think they can make him better and I liked him. The day levels were way better then the night levels so I think it would be stupid to make a Sonic Unleashed and split up the gameplay with lots of frustrating werehoglevels and just a few daytimelevels. If they want Mr Monster guy back they have to give him a very small part i the game. I would like to see him again but not like in Sonic unleashed where i almost take the whole game for himself. Mr Monster guy: Stay away from the hedgehog and give him some time to shine in the next unleashed game. You can be there to but not so people get mad at you!
Please, no more werehog. He belongs in a completely different game, and he just looks so stupid. And calling him “Sonic” feels so wrong. Just leave Soniic Unleashed in the past and move on to a different idea. One that revolves around a Sonic style of gameplay. Even if there has to be slower stages/areas in the mix, the main gameplay needs to have a SINGLE identity, not a split personality ala Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure 1, 2, and Sonic 06.
Doctor Eggman: I agree but I think Mr Monster guy should come back. Sonic unleashed was like an new star for Sonic and Mr Monster guy was a part of that. Let him come back but just a little bit.
I REALLY don’t want the werehog to come back….it was enough the first time in Unleashed. An Unleashed 2 sounds promising….IF they leave out the werehog!
Make a Sonic Unleashed two but maybe they should leave the werehog outside the story and just have him in a minigame or give him a little own story that you can play after you completed the game just for fun.
But if SEGA says: We will make an Unleashed two with daytime leels and nighttime levels, but we make the night time levels better then the last time.
Then I think the game will be one of Sonics less good games, but just a little bit better the Unleashed 1. Unleashed 1 was good because we saw normal Sonic be really good, but now it’s nothing new and if they make i second unleashed with werehog, the daytime levels wont be anything new and the game maybe will be worse then the first one.

Mind you, I wouldn’t mind if the Werehog just ended up being an optional or a multiplayer character from here on in. But please do not make it an obligitory (sp?) main character again. Not only would it make me and several other fans pissed, but like I said above, it’ll break continuity as well (like that’s new

However this could maybe work… just remove 75% of the enemy fights per Level, make the relation between daytime and nighttime 70 : 30, make the Werehog a little faster and add more platforming. Then it could work out better.
SEGA can’t trick me again! If they do a SU2 with the werehog I know the game wont be as good as all te other new cool Sonic games. Sonic the hedgehog is the best! Sonic the werehog is good but he can’t be better tham hedgehog so why make a game with him? Maybe he can be in the game a litle bit just for some action and variation but not like a big part of the game. In the future hedgehogs should rule! Not Mr Monster guys!

Well Sonic team said they would probably take it into consideration. So there may not be a second Unleashed. The fights bored me on the Ps3 version and he moved slower than the wiihog. The deaths in that version made me want to destroy my Ps3. Even the end ticked me off.
I call the werehog Mr Monsterguy because it’s fun!

I would rather they modified the basic Werehog game play and turn it into Ristar 3D.
But the hedgehog is better then Mr Monster guy! Why give the game something bad? I like the action and variation in the werehog so I can accept that he’s in the game a litle bit, but not as a to big part in the game!
It’s good if they can make Mr Monster guy better but I think he can’t get better then normal Sonic!

Anyways, just fuck the idea, and move onto something new instead. I say, try to relive the gameplay elements of Adventure 1&2, without being in a mech for more than 3 levels. Add in more characters (Vector, Charmy, Espio, Silver, Blaze, Jet, Omega, etc.)(While most can be for multiplayer only.) Make the controls less stiff, several more levels, and even a half decent story, with fast-paced-PLATFORMING

you have to make sonic unleashed 2 because i had idea foe the were hog first well in the last boss sonic the werehog transedforme into superweresonic to fight dark gaia in space it will be so asome so on wii socks because there were not the same thing as xbox360 so dont change the diffrent days wii and xbox360 because i want you to put wake through so we can explore the town.
Please, GOD! NO! Don’t they understand that the Werehog should just die? Sonic Unleashed was almost good…it would have been perfect if the werehog wasn’t there, and if they replaced him with more levels for Sonic. (And if these levels were cartoony and styled like Genesis/Advance/Rush Adventure type environments.) Just my opinion.

Ever stop to think that Sonic Team is doing this to anger YOU guys off specifically? It’s their plan to get the classic fanboys out of the fandom by 2011. Sort of like winding down the Iraq War only instead of withdrawing troops, they’re introducing cockamamie ideas with decent execution that make the fanboys go apeshit but more rational thinking fans not even bat an eyelash. Seriously, it’s been happening since Sonic Adventure and I doubt they’re going to stop.
Give them the time and the resources and I’m pretty sure they could do something good with him, even if people will ignore it.

Yoshihisa made SU1 and it didn’t went so good with the werehog. I have a feeling of that Yoshihisa does’nt have som much controle over nightime levels. I think he more was in the daytime.

I’d actually love to play as him in a SPINOFF. If they need something like that again in a main game though, just bring back Ristar or something, and leave Sonic the hell alone.
Then again, I understand the reasoning. The Werehog is the reason it’s called Unleashed in the first place.
@ Werehog: I just realized, but how is Sonic and Atlantis a good match, seeing as how the city is underwater…? I mean he could learn to swim in that game or something, but that’d kind of take away from Sonic’s character, don’t you think? Plus, it seems like it’d be a little more blue than I’d like to see in one game (that isn’t Sonic of course).
Well the freak does have his own sonic channel profile. Sort of makes sence spin-off wise. Knowing my luck I smell another Tikal. To me the werehog was a wasted opportunity.
If there was a SU2, Werehog would appear. The Werehog is an integral part of Unleashed, just like Chip. We probably will see the Werehog again…we still see rather meaningless characters like the Chaotix. Nothing in this says “Next Sonic game will be 50/50 split with Werehog in a prominent role”.
Besides that, did I miss something? This is the director of Black Knight. This would be like Dimps saying Silver will come back.
I hope he comes back.
