Some in Sonic Fandom Happy to See TSS Down

stadium_shutdownSmall Factions Speak Out

The sudden shutdown of the Sonic Stadium has morphed into a means for much of the community to come together and support the website and their staff, who are just now starting the top Sonic site’s road to recovery.

Much, but not all.

Though few and far between, some in Sonic fandom are speaking out against TSS on other Sonic and Sega related forums, criticizing the site’s policies and initiatives while the rebuilding process goes on–in essence, kicking TSS while it’s still down.

TSSZ News found one such thread over on the official Sega of America forums.  Though not sanctioned by Sega, the thread, titled “No Drama ’09 is IMPOSSIBLE,” contains a mix of opinions on the TSS shutdown, with most not saddened by the event, and a few even thrilled with the news.

I for one, am celebrating. Sonic Stadium was quite pompous,” said forumer Tulippon.

I said karmatic retribution would hit them, in the future,” chimed in another forumer, Pur-Rulz.  “I didn’t think so big, so soon.”

Another forumer, wring, had a stronger opinion.

I’m actually glad No Drama 09 is going to be hurt! Sonic Stadium has a way of twisting things around. If they say “People can like the new games AND the old games” they really mean “People can like the new games BUT THE OLD GAMES ARE BETTER SO SHUT THE HECK UP STUPID NOOB!!!!!!!!” In other words, I don’t really trust them, I’d be happier with the flame wars, which can be controlled by the mods and admins of a forum. Now, I wouldn’t normally tell someone how to run their forum, but they’re wanting this to become the norm, which has me worried that the entire fandom would consider throwing out the whole point of posting in order to avoid flamewars. Basically if this was a success all we could say would be “Wow that’s great.” Or “Wow that’s great, but I don’t really like it that much.” There’s nothing wrong with saying stuff like that, but if you’re forced to post like that ALL THE TIME, well that defeats the whole purpose of a forum… What reasonable discussion could possibly go on like that? Besides, some forums do have rules that you have to like the media the forum is about. Why not just make that a rule? Rather then trying to get the entire internet to follow a censorship program on Sonic forums.

Some of those same sentiments were shared over at the Saturday Morning Sonic forums, where the shutdown did get some attention.  Here’s what SatAMSonic forumer CorganPrix had to say on the matter:

I am seriously debating whether I should mourn their loss or pop open a bottle of champagne and toast the new dawn. [....] While I have no personal grudge against DreadKnux, I am somewhat ecstatic that SegaSonic fantards just lost their major congregation site and will now have to start over from scratch.

Another forumer, Seriously Funny, had this to say:

I’m pretty sure once Sonic Stadium goes back online, it’ll just be the same as it was before. And to be honest, there’s a part of me that doesn’t even want Sonic Stadium to come back…

It should be stressed that, as far as it can be determined, comments like these are in the minority, and that most of the community has come to the support of the Sonic Stadium, and its staff.  While the comments may not be appropriate to some, they may not come as a total surprise.  In July, when Sonic and the Black Knight was first announced, the Stadium took heat from much of the Sonic community for vocally speaking out against the concept of the game.  Sonic Stadium webmaster Svend Joscelyne defended and then clarified those comments.

We will continue to monitor developments as the Stadium starts its road to recovery, and we invite your comments below.
