Some in Sonic Fandom Happy to See TSS Down

Tristan Oliver | March 5, 2009

stadium_shutdownSmall Factions Speak Out

The sudden shutdown of the Sonic Stadium has morphed into a means for much of the community to come together and support the website and their staff, who are just now starting the top Sonic site’s road to recovery.

Much, but not all.

Though few and far between, some in Sonic fandom are speaking out against TSS on other Sonic and Sega related forums, criticizing the site’s policies and initiatives while the rebuilding process goes on–in essence, kicking TSS while it’s still down.

TSSZ News found one such thread over on the official Sega of America forums.  Though not sanctioned by Sega, the thread, titled “No Drama ’09 is IMPOSSIBLE,” contains a mix of opinions on the TSS shutdown, with most not saddened by the event, and a few even thrilled with the news.

I for one, am celebrating. Sonic Stadium was quite pompous,” said forumer Tulippon.

I said karmatic retribution would hit them, in the future,” chimed in another forumer, Pur-Rulz.  “I didn’t think so big, so soon.”

Another forumer, wring, had a stronger opinion.

I’m actually glad No Drama 09 is going to be hurt! Sonic Stadium has a way of twisting things around. If they say “People can like the new games AND the old games” they really mean “People can like the new games BUT THE OLD GAMES ARE BETTER SO SHUT THE HECK UP STUPID NOOB!!!!!!!!” In other words, I don’t really trust them, I’d be happier with the flame wars, which can be controlled by the mods and admins of a forum. Now, I wouldn’t normally tell someone how to run their forum, but they’re wanting this to become the norm, which has me worried that the entire fandom would consider throwing out the whole point of posting in order to avoid flamewars. Basically if this was a success all we could say would be “Wow that’s great.” Or “Wow that’s great, but I don’t really like it that much.” There’s nothing wrong with saying stuff like that, but if you’re forced to post like that ALL THE TIME, well that defeats the whole purpose of a forum… What reasonable discussion could possibly go on like that? Besides, some forums do have rules that you have to like the media the forum is about. Why not just make that a rule? Rather then trying to get the entire internet to follow a censorship program on Sonic forums.

Some of those same sentiments were shared over at the Saturday Morning Sonic forums, where the shutdown did get some attention.  Here’s what SatAMSonic forumer CorganPrix had to say on the matter:

I am seriously debating whether I should mourn their loss or pop open a bottle of champagne and toast the new dawn. [....] While I have no personal grudge against DreadKnux, I am somewhat ecstatic that SegaSonic fantards just lost their major congregation site and will now have to start over from scratch.

Another forumer, Seriously Funny, had this to say:

I’m pretty sure once Sonic Stadium goes back online, it’ll just be the same as it was before. And to be honest, there’s a part of me that doesn’t even want Sonic Stadium to come back…

It should be stressed that, as far as it can be determined, comments like these are in the minority, and that most of the community has come to the support of the Sonic Stadium, and its staff.  While the comments may not be appropriate to some, they may not come as a total surprise.  In July, when Sonic and the Black Knight was first announced, the Stadium took heat from much of the Sonic community for vocally speaking out against the concept of the game.  Sonic Stadium webmaster Svend Joscelyne defended and then clarified those comments.

We will continue to monitor developments as the Stadium starts its road to recovery, and we invite your comments below.

You’ll always have this kind of behaviour. Many of the TSS staff (including myself) get regualr emails (or spam) relating to our position on the site.

I would argue that there are many more people who are more than happy to see TSS fall as it has done, and I certainly doubt they are in the minority. But then again many of these people (some of whom I belive are attribute to a group called “the true sonic fans”) are probably as guilty of some of the things that they claim TSS is guilty of.

As far as I’m concerened with the whole matter, I’m working to help those who have been affected by the ordeal, nothing else.

All I can say is simply this.

Video Game fanboys of all types are 100% retarded.

  3. Pur Rulz on March 5th, 2009 12.41 pm

Hey, being surprised is not being happy. I just said that they had disaster coming, if they kept up their stupid way of running things, and apparently this came in the form of a shoddy host. Can’t say I;m sad to see it down, but I’m certainly not happy, either.

The only site I’d be happy to die would be X-Treme Island, and that’s nowt to do with Sonic.

Seriously, this out of context crap and bias is why they got karmatic retribution, in the first place. You want it to happen twice?

  4. Osnic on March 5th, 2009 12.53 pm

If they’re happy that’s their problem, not my problem. But I’m not happy, I like TSS.:(

  5. rabidkanid on March 5th, 2009 2.25 pm

If they’re not happy? They can go somewhere else. TSS provided relatively up to date news on our little blue blue, fan art spotlight, a forum where I got to start a thread that people actually responded to. IMO the only people who would complain about it are those that truely don’t appreciate what they do and think all this information and hard work just pops out of nowhere. People who actually want Sonic news untainted by ignorant childish bias go to TSS, all others can leave, we won’t miss you.

Being a former member there, I don’t want them to die. They were a fine site with a fine message (No Drama 09. How can you complain about that?) Personally I stopped going there to cut down the time I spend on the internet. However I hope that they make a full and fast recovery.

  7. TailstheHedgehog on March 5th, 2009 4.21 pm

sheesh, these guys should back off, there are real people who run that site and who are likely going to read all that, not that I think they’re gonna care much, this IS TSS. These people are probably just being sheep….
I’ve always liked their sense of humour, not as coarse as Cult, but funny enough to amuse older readers, plus some fun comps to, these are the guys who did alot more than help bring us Summer of Sonic!
I’m wishing TSS a speedy recovery! Good luck guys!!

  8. Danielle on March 5th, 2009 5.43 pm

Absoulutely agreed Tailsthehedgehog. TSS was my type of site and probably the only sonic site I know of that stood on the side of the older sonic fans who have stood with the franchise and is pretty angry at the riduclous changes made to it. It was nice to have “A” site on side that doesnt lap up everything as if every new gimmick or idea is the greatest thing to happen to sonic.

On the flipside the people that where on the boards of TSS where the opposite. I found to be the most rabid harsh stuck up fanboyish sonic fans I have found so far on the net. You know…. the type that if you even mention a glitch in the game they will rip you apart and make an excuse to say why it helps the game O_o!

  9. CorganPrix on March 5th, 2009 6.43 pm

Well, I’m glad to see that I am making a name for myself.

Seriously people, that comment was not meant to be an attack. Chill out.

  10. Tulippon on March 5th, 2009 7.16 pm

Zomg. This is the second time I’ve been on the news :0

And yes, I’m glad it’s gone. I attended those forums ages ago and most people were snide and otherwise unpleasant. It also turned out a lot of idiots.

That said I am, by my name obviously, a classic Sonic fan.

  11. Seriously Funny on March 5th, 2009 7.30 pm

As I later said over at Saturday Morning Sonic, while there is a part of me that doesn’t want Sonic Stadium to come back, I will admit that there is another part of me that holds respect for Sonic Stadium and the positive things they’ve been able to accomplish for the benefit of the Sonic online community. Sure, there have been quite a few things that have urked me about Sonic Stadium, but really, if you’re able to organize a convention like Summer of Sonic and turn it into a great success, you must be doing something right.

On a side note, please keep in mind that the comments made by me and CorganPrix only represent our individual views, and they do NOT represent the views of Saturday Morning Sonic or its staff.

  12. supa scourge on March 5th, 2009 7.43 pm

i like tss SO EVERYBODY WHO DOESNT SHUT THE FUCK UP

  13. Roarey Raccoon on March 5th, 2009 8.41 pm

TSS has a history of being the brunt of spite anyway, so the views of a few people is far from a threat. Everybody has a reason for the beliefs they have, if I don’t know the reason then I’m not going to judge XP. People can be bastards on any forum, SSMB just happened to be a big one, so there isn’t that lovely privilage that smaller boards have in the form of a stronger sense of community. The more people there are, the more isolating it can be, so you tend to become more opinionated to stand out a bit.

I certainly don’t think SSMB members are particularly more stupid than people you get in any other community; in fact I see a great deal of maturity from many members. Either way, depends on what you’ve personally experienced there doesn’t it.

  14. Golden~Hedgy on March 6th, 2009 1.49 am

I don’t know why people that is listed in the articles is getting flamed on here via comments…. we all have our own beliefs.

You know…. I have a feeling that people are FORCING everyone to like the same thing… especially in the Sonic fandom…

  15. wolly da wanderer on March 6th, 2009 2.00 am

I read the forum. I think they are quite justified. I did get very annoyed about the comments they made on the newer games. Good or bad. It just annoyed me. And their IGN article with the sarcasm meter was pushing it. To me this might be a much needed reboot and might weed out the idiots… or maybe not…

  16. Talk About Low Budget Flights... on March 6th, 2009 4.01 am

Tbh, I don’t mind. It would be nice if they came back. If not, it’s not the end of the world.

  17. Heran on March 6th, 2009 4.29 am

This doesn’t really count as news.

  18. Roareye Black on March 6th, 2009 4.36 am

The TSS Network has been the key of several major revolutions in the Sonic fanbase since it’s conception and all you crybabies can do is whinge and cry for not bothering to be a part of it?

The key issue is the majority of the complaints are about the Sonic News system, and how much bias was involved in it. This in itself is true, but then you forgot that it isn’t Sonic News anymore, it is a BLOG. Opinions are part and parcel of the package. Regardless an upcoming design is set to look at seperating blog from news, so both parties will have their preference.

The sprites were kept, they are/were on Sonic Showcase Network (Which will have some major updating when the new design comes online) so anyone complaining about that is at fault for not looking.

Not to mention the benefits we created on Sonic Site Awards, the pixel art community and most recently the amazing expo known as Summer of Sonic. Though I find alot of Americans cry about it cos they don’t have Summer of Sonic, and whinge that they want one. The fact is that TSS among many other UK Sonic fansites put money, time and effort in to communicate with Sega Europe and help fund and create that experience. If you guys want one, make one. Stop being so lazy.

The irony here is that the people on that forum moan that TSS was up its own arse and snobby, yet their attitude just pangs of irony as thier reaction is the same way. A snobbish (If not jealous) blocking out of many members of the community all because “My sites better than your crappy site anyway” way of thinking. You’d rather remove community members like Dreadknux, me, Roarey Raccoon, Slingerland, Flint, D’Harhan, Flyboy Fox etc just to pander to your selfish want of no TSS? I’m glad I’m not part of the SoA community right now, I’d be ashamed :(

  19. Dr.Eggfang on March 6th, 2009 7.30 pm

That place was SegaSonic? It seemed more NintendoSonic to me, the place was full of annoying kids raised on Sonic X and SA2B.

  20. Edgethesquirrel on March 7th, 2009 6.46 pm

I was happy to see it die. but now its back… well better get to spamming them!

Well all Im gonna say is Sonicstadium SUUUUUUUCKS!

We even have a club called the “Defend Sonic Brigade” that are celebrating this on Deviantart.com

All SS did was fricking bash the whole series. they are not true fans.

  21. wolly da wanderer on March 8th, 2009 1.59 am

@Edgethesquirrel: I’m sorry but are you high? Those guys may have had problems with him in the past but remained loyal. They have featured fan art and work helped other sites when in need and helped The summer of sonic convention. While some of their articles did get the WTF? look at lot I sure as hell did. I still apreachiate their work.

And if your not down with that I got two words for ya…
SUCK IT!!! *crotch chops in your direction*
Yes I’m a D generation X fan girl. Got a problem with that?

  22. DoctorEggman on March 8th, 2009 2.03 am

The only thing I like about TSS are the news updates. But with TSSZnews around, I don’t even need TSS since I rarely use their forums and don’t care much about their opinions.

  23. Roareye Black on March 8th, 2009 3.23 am

@Edgethesquirrel: Funny how WE’RE not real Sonic fans, having been around nearly 10 years, created some of the most prestigious events in Sonic fandom (Including the creation of Summer of Sonic btw in 2006, with Sega helping make it a bigger convention in 2008) and actually supporting people within the community as much as possible. I love how people who have never even done anything to support the community have the audacity to call us out as fakes or not true fans. You’re the equivalent of a fat alcoholic sitting at home getting paid benefits (Money paid by the taxpayer to stop you starving btw) who can’t even be arsed to get a job but saying “Damn black people are ruining this country.”

    Roareye Black.

  24. YoDog on March 9th, 2009 12.14 pm

“The only thing I like about TSS are the news updates. But with TSSZnews around, I don’t even need TSS since I rarely use their forums and don’t care much about their opinions.”

This site is opinionated, too. The stories have enough spin to reverse the world’s rotation.

  25. CorganPrix on March 10th, 2009 8.15 pm

Wow, I love how this has become a heated debate over who is the true Sonic fan.

I am going to go ahead and admit that I am NOT a Sonic fan, and proud of it. I only posted on an SMS forum because it represented a cartoon that I enjoyed as a kid. That’s it. The Sonic Universe as a whole can burn in the pits of Hell for all I give a shit.

So all the people harping about how much Sonic Stadium did for the Sonic community does not make me respect SS anymore than I used to. I still stand by my original words.
