Speed Still Exists in Arthurian Legend
Deep within the depths of Sonic and the Black Knight are legacy missions–missions that bring back more traditional 3D Sonic gameplay.
Rings, springs and robots litter the landscape in these missions, as opposed to the fairies and sword-slinging action gamers are accustomed to in SBK. Sadly, gamers have a long way to go before unlocking these missions.
If you don’t feel up to it, just sit back and watch the missions in action here. Youtube user Shizzlee23 has posted many of the legacy missions online. We’ve posted three below, but you can always check out the profile for many more.
After looking at the videos, we want your opinion on whether you think it would have been appropriate to have this type of gameplay throughout Sonic and the Black Knight, instead of as a final reward. Sound off in the comments below.

Rings, yes, springs, yes, loops, YES, but robots? No. It doesn’t make sense to have them in the world of the BK game and, well, I was fairly certain we would NOT be hearing from Sonic Heroes style robots again. Hecks. No.
Good idea, don’t reuse enemies from games that weren’t good in people’s eyes to rub it in and and you’re golden.
Hmm, having the game like this doesn’t make it seem too bad. So the whole game couldn’t of been like this… WHY?
What are you talking about, I unlocked like two of them the first day I got the game, it kicked ass, hard.
@PJman: ‘Cos the game’s set in Camelot, not the Green Hill Zone.
Still, can’t wait ’til I unlock these levels. Or I may have done and haven’t noticed yet.
So, I’m done with the game now. I beat all the missions! So I already new this. It’s good with this old stuff but it would be boring if the whole game was like the old.
and plus during the missions you dont use your sword, I think its really just for the novelty.
Kits’Okami: If it weren’t for Sonic and the Secret Rings not caring about that I might have agreed with you.
I was thinking about this. Why coulden’t they give us some flying creatures from the “underworld” where you can use your homing attack. And I didn’t know this cus I haven’t beaten all the missions beacus I haven’t had any time for playing this week. And today I’ve been playing this ranking thing, it’s fun!XD But I’m going to fix all this missions tommorrow. It wont be so hard.XD Sp anyway, it would be better is they used some kind of funny springs that looks like they were something old from king arthurs time or something and some flying enimies where you can use the hominh attack.
it didn’t take me long to unlock these… i unlocked these a couple of ours after i beat it.
The thing that really annoyed be about the normal gameplay is that the homing attack did no damage… I know they want you to use the sword, but it could have at least stunned enemies.
Sure is cOLD in here.
Anyway, these stages aren’t much fun at all. Nostalgic, yes, but that’s all. Next I suppose you’ll make a news update about the character medals?
… Why wasn’t the whole game made in true Sonic style like these videos present? Only thing I dislike is how the robots just sit there.
What a shame, SEGA.
No platforming, no loop-de-loops, no combat with the enemies, and a homing attack that through some honest-to-god miracle manages to be worse than 2006′s or Secret Rings’s.
It’s nothing but a graphics swap that relies on an even more unreliable form of combat then the sword. It’s almost like they could tell how bad the homing attack was, so they didn’t bother to add any real enemies in. Black Knight is so dependent on the combat for the stages to last any decent stretch of time (or be reasonably difficult), that when you take that out, it becomes little more than a “grab the rings” minigame with some incredibly unreliable and frustrating homing attack gap jumping.
Am I supposed to be impressed?
It doesn’t exactly fit the setting since they’re in armor and have swords. But what the hell Sega?! You give us the Sonic games we want in Black Knight, Unleashed, Rush, yet you don’t put it as the full game!?! Really, they should stop with these gimmicks, just give us the game with Sonic ONLY no gimmicks at all…
Sure is cOLD in here. There’s nothing special about these missions. They’re repetitive and overall boring.
Next, will you make an update about the character medals?
Wow….it’s like Sonic Team saying: “Here…we figure you probably won’t like this game anyway so have something slightly closer to what you actually wanted as a present for giving this a chance.”
They sure are short.
This still looks INCREDIBLY lame. Not even the rings, springs, and dashboards redeem it for me.
Sure IGN-y arround here. Guys, even if this isn’t the perfect Sonic game, this doesn’t mean that SBK can be a good game on its own. I mean, do you really expect to find loop-de-loops in the age of King Arthur? Come on.
I always wondered why these vids got so many views compared my others. Now I know why
