SBK Debuts at #30 in Japan

Sonic and the Black Knight was released last week in Japan, and sales figures are already coming in.  In short–for the Sonic Team, the numbers don’t add up.

The game debuted at #30 on the Media Create Sales charts from March 9th through 15th.  Keep in mind that SBK was released in the middle of the week, so only four days of sales are represented.  Still, VGChartz.com estimates those four days didn’t go so well for the game, with only 4,126 copies sold, according to the website.

In contrast, the top seller in Japan for the week, Koei’s Musou Orochi Z for the Playstation 3, sold 112, 283 copies, according to Media Create.  That game was also a new release for the week.

Two Sega titles did make the top ten.  Yakuza 3 for the PS3 hit #7 on the charts with 23,815 sold, and right behind it at #8 was 7th Dragon for the Nintendo DS with 22,341 sold.

Japanese gamers are well known to be fickle with Sonic, with sales eventually settling into consistency.  The Japanese edition of Sonic Unleashed for the Wii only sold 5,810 copies its first week of sale, according to VGChartz.

VGChartz itself has been criticized by gamers for seemingly arbitrary practices in gathering sales data for its website.

The numbers may seem bleak in Japan, but domestically, sales aren’t doing much better.  TSSZ News will tell you more about that in a story coming on Monday.
