Only 4,000+ Estimated Sold
Sonic and the Black Knight was released last week in Japan, and sales figures are already coming in. In short–for the Sonic Team, the numbers don’t add up.
The game debuted at #30 on the Media Create Sales charts from March 9th through 15th. Keep in mind that SBK was released in the middle of the week, so only four days of sales are represented. Still, VGChartz.com estimates those four days didn’t go so well for the game, with only 4,126 copies sold, according to the website.
In contrast, the top seller in Japan for the week, Koei’s Musou Orochi Z for the Playstation 3, sold 112, 283 copies, according to Media Create. That game was also a new release for the week.
Two Sega titles did make the top ten. Yakuza 3 for the PS3 hit #7 on the charts with 23,815 sold, and right behind it at #8 was 7th Dragon for the Nintendo DS with 22,341 sold.
Japanese gamers are well known to be fickle with Sonic, with sales eventually settling into consistency. The Japanese edition of Sonic Unleashed for the Wii only sold 5,810 copies its first week of sale, according to VGChartz.
VGChartz itself has been criticized by gamers for seemingly arbitrary practices in gathering sales data for its website.
The numbers may seem bleak in Japan, but domestically, sales aren’t doing much better. TSSZ News will tell you more about that in a story coming on Monday.

You see that’s because everyone can see that this game is pure trash. At least Unleashed had some fun to be had.
ya mar! LOL random
Yeah sooo intresting…….not! It dosen’t matter how much it sells! It dosen’t have to be a bad game beacuse of that.
It about time Sonic games stop selling well. Maybe then Sega will make a decent one.
Quality does not equal sales regardless of what most of you band wagoners think.
It should sell well in the US thanks to the gamecube raised Sonic fans, those guys are rabid as they are annoying.
Lets look at a Wii game called Zack & Wiki.
Did it sell well? NO
Is it a bad game? HELL NO!
Sales don’t matter at all. Halo 3 got huge sales but it was a disappointment to many.
Story was to short and all that was left was the better-than-single player-mode Online Multiplayer.
Also, Sonic is NOT as popular in Japan as he is here.
30!? In Japan!?
Nice, I suppose, bus sense we talking about game ranks in a country where Sonic is not that popular, I was expecting a lower rank for this game than at 30 in that country!
But hey…
Fun fact: The people claiming that sales doesn’t mean quality are most likely the same people who say “See? [some other game] sold [large number] of copies, that means it’s good!”
Stop being hypocritical fanboys.
I don’t care if the most of the japanese people miss good game. It’s there own problem!
well it IS more popular over here, but that figure still isn’t very much.
they aren’t fanboys/girls till they stick their finger on the caps lock button lol
@GerbilSoft: nah, not fanboy’s/girls, juts highly opinionated people
LT13: Zack and Wiki is much different from Sonic. Sonic is (was?) a huge gaming icon for nearly twenty years, and almost everyone knows who he is. In contrast, I, for example, have never even heard of Zack and Wiki. It’s one thing for a game few people know about to sale badly. It’s another thing entirely for a franchise as big as Sonic to sell badly. The fact that people hardly care when a new Sonic game is released shows that they’re finally acknowledging how far down the series has fallen.
