Claims of Sonic 2K6 Nudity Disputed, Discussion Cut

nudityWas Discovery Deliberately Doctored?

Yesterday’s story we published concerning the possible discovery of a nude character model for Elise in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog has already been read and talked about by thousands.  It’s raised a lot of legitimate questions.  Why would developers at Sega and Sonic Team spend time and effort on something never meant to be seen by the general public instead of improving the flop’s quality as a whole?  Why take the chance given the incredible fallout Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive endured with the Hot Coffee scandal in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?

But increasingly, some members of the Sonic research community are asking a completely different question: Was the whole thing one elaborate hoax?

Accusations have begun progagating throughout the community that the pictures allegedly showing an unclothed Elise were the result of careful editing toward a program that embraces it–Garry’s Mod.  The most convincing evidence thus far has surfaced on the Sonic Stadium boards, where the initial information surfaced via forumer HunterTSF. That’s where GrandMasterJimmy posted a final and potentially only texture map of Elise’s character model.  We have that for your review below.

Complementing the imagery were these words:

GMOD is not something you use for something like this. The body on that model is not official.

Were’s the nipple and such? It’s not there because GMOD models always have edits like this. Her model itself also has nothing there, it cuts off right after it goes inside the dress. The only skin she has is a little under her neck, her arms, and legs.

The release of the the above image has led some to conclude that the examples were merely the result of combining Elise’s original textures with another model that included textured anatomy.

The evidence to the contrary doesn’t stop there.  HunterTSF cited X Cult as one of the sources of his information, so TSSZ News checked out Sonic Cult’s research section on the 2006 Sonic, as well as the X Cult message boards.  No evidence to support HunterTSF‘s citation has yet been posted or found.  That raises questions as to whether the information could have surfaced from a chat log, or if the imagery even originated from the ‘Cult in the first place.

The plain bizzare nature of the images, as well as the debate over its authenticity, has left some in Sonic fandom very confused.  Among them is forumer Diablohead at Sonic Retro, one of the cores of current Sonic research:

….What’s the true reason for this?

Are we looking at one of several Elise model files from 2k6 which features her full body? or an edited Elise by someone who then lied? Nothing is very clear.

But another Retro forumer, corneliab, finds the new information easy to swallow:

Polygon Jim has already invalidated the whole thing, and this topic’s continued presence and discussion has no merit. Additionally, I imagine that many users (particularly those who are unfamiliar with Gary’s [sic] Mod) will simply see view the thread’s initial post and that’s it for them; having attained some incorrect and unforutunately poignant info that they may feel compelled to spread around. I doubt anyone wants that.

Unfortunately, neither they nor others are being allowed to continue the debate and discussion in the areas that may be most appropriate.  Administrators at both Sonic Retro and The Sonic Stadium ended discussion on the controversial Elise photos this morning, primarily on the basis of coming to their own conclusions that the new evidence presented contradicts and irrefutably disproves the original information.

If it is a hoax, questions as to who specifically did it and why it was done remain unanswered.  For the moment, however, TSSZ News stands by the original story and its content.  We have put in an E-Mail to both X Cult and HunterTSF asking for comment, and should we hear back something which gets to the bottom of the dispute, that information will be passed along.  In the meantime, you are welcome to continue discussing the matter–including whether you now think the original photos were hoaxed–in the comments area below.
