Standalone PS3 Sales Up, PS2 Way Down
Though its game sales division did better than expected, the complete business picture for Sony looks quite bleak, as the company reported a yearly loss of about $1 billion.
Much of that loss resides with other slumping electronic sales and the general state of the global economy, but that doesn’t mean the company’s Playstation division didn’t bear some responsibility. Overall, hardware sales were down, but much of that can be attributed to a 42% drop in sales of the Playstation 2.
The Playstation 3, on the other hand, has some reason to celebrate. Though the console still has a long way to go to catch up with the likes of the XBOX360 and Wii, its sales were up year to year by a little under one million units. Sony reported that just over ten million PS3s were sold worldwide in FY2008.
There was good news for the Playstation Portable as well, as that console saw growth by 300,000 units, selling over 14 million worldwide in the past fiscal year.
The company expects 13 million PS3s to be sold in FY2009, along with 15 million PSPs. Despite the expected uptick with game hardware, Sony has warned its shareholders it expects to post a $1.2 billion loss for FY2009.

Will this system is like $500 what did you expect like i am going to waste $500 on a system that doesnt have a big library of games and is way to much money Xbox 360 is way better there price is more reasonable its like $350 and it has a big library of games i am so not getting this console if they lowered the price then maybe i would do it but they lowered the PS2 which is not in this console era so ya PS3 is so not going to get lots of sales.
Can’t say I’m surprised at the PS2′s drop. The 360 is now very affordable, so people have little reason to be hanging about with 6th gen consoles. PS2 game development has also slowed right down, with only a couple of must have games per year, and a lot of its games going to PSP or Wii.
For a company like Sony I kinda expected losses like this. Best of luck to them making it through mostly unscathed.
