Tried…but Far from Perfect
Do you remember the comment made on yesterday’s story regarding the release of what is essentially a ROM of Sonic the Hedgehog to the iPhone and iPod touch?
Someone else did.
The comment from Taxman, in essence, states that the game was ported so haphazardly that any Genesis ROM could theoretically be inserted into the game’s app archive and also be played. Those words weren’t lost on another Sonic Retro forumer, Phoebius, who tried out the experiment on a jailbroken iPhone.
His results are below. The visuals are quite glitchy, and in his words, “that wasn’t what I expected.” But while it does prove, to an extent, that it can be done, it also shows that for Sega, bringing Sonic to the two portable devices wasn’t quite as easy as porting a ROM.

hmm…COOL. Not Really
Hahahahah. It’s horribly pixeled.
But still pretty cool!
Odd. Before discovering this article, I tried out various games, S&K being one of them. When I attempted to play it, it worked fine until the actual game started and I touched the screen, which caused the rom to restart. I chalk this up to the fact that when the screen is touched at the title in Sonic 1, it brings the game’s menu up; the game emulated essentially perfectly.
I figured it out, to an extent. If you do not skip the title screen’s animations, the game runs fine. However, the scenario I describe above still happens.
Right now, I’m trying to find a way to disable the game resetting from touching the screen.
Yeah, getting a ROM to work on any old emulator isn’t easy. The emulator needs alot of work and the game needs testing to make sure the emulator caters to its needs. IIRC, porting is something else.
