Sonic’s Channel Strips Self-Proclaimed “Official” Status

It looked for a while that there was going to be a legal showdown between the YouTube Sonic Channel–claiming itself to be official and the source of a debunker rumor involving another Sonic compilation several days ago–and Sega, which debunked said rumor and took measures to protect its brand against the rogue channel.

It now appears that tensions have calmed down: In all but one or two instances, the “official” branding is gone from the channel, as well as its network of sites featuring several characters from the Sonic universe.

Previously, we had told you how ArchangelUK, speaking in his capacity as a Sega Europe employee, had brought the channel to Sega’s attention, with the company mulling its options in the wake of what appeared to be defiance on a part of the channel.

The channel likely would have never been thrust into the spotlight had it not been for a listing there that noted a third current gen Sonic compilation, dubbed Sonic Mega Collection 3, was planned for a 2010 release across all consoles.  Interestingly, the website now lists its SMC3 entry as simply “cancelled.”
