Official Birthday Marked Today
For Sonic fandom, there have been many highs and lows over the years, and recently such extremes have wildly fluctuated on any number of topics.
Today, however is a good day for all Sonic fans. It is Sonic’s birthday. Though the games’ storyline has kept him at 15 all these years, it is in fact 18 years ago today that Sonic made his first splash on gaming.
On June 23rd, 1991, the original Sonic the Hedgehog was released on the Sega Genesis in North America, and the Sega Mega Drive in Europe. Japan saw Sonic about a month later, on July 26th, 1991. The game and the hedgehog would mark a new era for Sega; an era where the company did what Nintendidn’t, and finally brought healthy competition to Nintendo, both in mascot appeal and where it really counted–the bottom line.
Sonic would help Sega dominate the 16-bit console era and has continued to assure the company’s role as a household name in games today. Though the hedgehog faltered in the three way war between the Saturn, Playstation and Nintendo 64 in the late 1990s, Sonic returned to glory in the short lived Sega Dreamcast era before the hedgehog shared the love among all consoles, a part of Sega’s decision to leave the hardware business earlier in this decade.
New generation fans can learn something from the old veterans, and vice-versa–and this post is the place to share that knowledge. I got into Sonic….as soon as my hands would fit around our Mega drive’s controller. 6, 7? Who knows? I never got to see him on the Dreamcast, but I’ve played nearly every official game released since.

I’ve been a Sonic fan for as long as I can remember. First game I ever played was Sonic 3 on the good ol’ Mega Drive. Its good to see that he’s survived for 18 years, when so many others like him have become just memories.

And now I’m 14. I’ve been it for something like 7 years and I like both new and old games. And I’ve nearly all Sonic games.

, I’ve played all Sonic games except the recent Sonic and the Black Night, and Sonic and the Secrets Rings (both for the wii), I firstly played Sonic The Hedgehog when I was 5 maybe 6 years old, like @TailesTheHedgehog said ” as soon as my hands would fit around our Mega drive’s controller ” 
, I still got my Sega Saturn, I love all Sonic Games no exception…
But my favourit games (in order of appearance) are:
– Sonic 3 and Knuckles
– Sonic Unleashed
– Sonic The Hedgehog (genesis)
– Sonic The Hedgheog 2
– Sonic R
etc…. I’m not saying all of them, because the list is huge

Oh Sonic how you have shaped my life. Whether it be because I met one of my best friends through my love of Sonic, or that I started to run (Yes, Sonic influenced me to run because I wanted to run fast like him), or simply that I’ve had hours of entertainment because of those games.

Sonic Fans, as a little present, I have constructed a Flash on Newgrounds called Sonictron Legends. Basically Sonic imagined as the Transformers villain Megatron(Like I did with the Sonic Oddball Crackups trilogy and 8 Prsents flash)

It’s fantastic to see 18 years on Sonic still has the charm and charisma to continue to attract fans for a whole host of reasons be it the music, the artstyle or even just as a means to socialise. Hopefully we’ll see some real corkers of games in years to come!

My first Sonic game was years ago. Sonic 2 was my very first game followed shortly by Sonic 1 (which led me to thinking “Why the hell can’t he spindash in the first one?”
My neighbor owned and it was one of the reasons I kept coming back there (other reasons included Banjo-Tooie and Smash Bros. 64). Although after a while I sort of didn’t go there anymore. No special reson, just didn’t. So all I had was my 64 and Gameboy and eventually Playstation 2.
Years later tho (altho I recall playing a bit of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on an emulator), my friend at school kept talking about Sonic then one day I went to Blockbuster looking for a game to play (back when the Gamecube was alive), And I saw Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on the shelf. Took it home, played it, then I was hooked on Sonic forever.
BTW Happy Birthday Sonic, despite the crap (mainly against you) you still managed to stay strong for all these years.
As an 18 years old hedgehog, he can now get his driving license…

Best Sonic experience was just sitting down, on a beautiful day, with the windows up, cool air breezing in, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 blasting on my genesis. It was such a fun laid-back experience — probably one of my most comfortable moments.

I still remember playing the Master System version for the first time way back in 1991…I played that first, then Megadrive Sonic 2 when that came out, then eventually Megadrive Sonic 1. Out of those first few Sonic titles I played, Megadrive Sonic 1 is probably my least favourite, but still a great game.
It was Sonic 2 that started getting me hooked on Sonic, but then along came Sonic 3 and it’s been my favourite game series ever since. Sonic 3 I consider to be the greatest game of all time. S&K and SCD are definitely up there in the all time classics as well.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Unleashed are my favourites of the 3D titles.

my sonic fandom started not with the games but with the cartoon SATAM and Aosth. infact i didn’t realize the hedgehog was a video game super star untill the real late 90′s when the SEGA dreamcast came out. i remember shopping for a couple of new games for my newly purchased dreamcast with my mom when i seen the Sonic Adventure game on the shelf. After recalling the blue blur from the Way Past Cool cartoons i bought the game and couldn’t stop playing it (i WAS HOOKED) and from that moment on i dedicated my video game life to following sonic! I was 9 when i made that pledge and now im 17 going onto 18 in september and i’ve never stopped supporting him since… through the years my knowledge has grown from memorising the lyrics of his songs to searching for every bit of known information on him. sonic was also a great friend and he still is. he kept me company when my parents got divorced, took me to places where i could only dream of, and he taught me many things in the long run too… Happy 18th Birthday Sonic The Hedgehog!!! Thanks for all the great adventures you took us on!!! and have A Way Past Cool Summer too!!!
