Sega asks about iPhone games, Taxman responds
The Sonic Community has been a continually larger factor in Sega’s treatment of the Sonic franchise these days. From naming characters in Sonic Chronicles to opening a fanart contest for Black Knight, Sega is embracing the community more than ever. Now, Sega is asking you what iPhone games you would like to see – and one prolific community member already has an answer.
Christian Whitehead, better known to the community as Taxman, has posted a video on Youtube of Sonic CD, running on an iPhone, through his Retro-Engine SDK, as a pitch to Sega.
Christian’s own website contains more information on the Sonic CD port:
Efficiency, flexibility, keeping it ‘Old Skool’. These are the design principles behind my Retro Engine. Along with its suite of creation tools in the Retro Software Development Kit (RSDK), I am able to develop classic 2D games in a fraction of the time it would take to start from scratch. So much so, that it has only taken a month for me to put together this Sonic CD proof of concept, without the use of the original game’s source code or a dissassembly.
The Retro Engine is multi-platform, with ports existing for PC, Mac and iPhone/iPod Touch. Therefore, a build from the RSDK program can exectuted on each of these platforms instantaneously. Additional platforms could also be added in the future. The iPhone/iPod Touch version of the engine makes full use of the Open GL ES to ensure efficient graphical performance.
This version, according to sources who have beta tested it, is a perfect, wide-screen replication of Sonic CD that runs at full-speed on both the iPhone and iPod touch – something that cannot be said for Sega’s recent iPhone port of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
If you would like to see Christian Whitehead’s enhanced iPhone/iPod Touch port of Sonic CD, simply tell Sega about it.

if only i had an iphone >< i mean sonic cd was the first retro 2d sonic game i ever beat took me 4 hours
Ok, that looked amazing.
Could he fix the spin dash in Sonic CD, so its instant like in Sonic 2?
did you notice that amy scene were she was in the first level not the second
While I would rather see Sonic 3 and Knuckles on the ipod touch, I must say… This is fucking amazing.
@sonicsmashkirby: Amy appeared on the first level in Sonic CD. Its the 2nd where she gets kidnapped by Metal Sonic.
WOW! Well, that’s awsome! You have to cover a part of the screen to freaking play the game! One more reason why I hate iPhone, iPod and apple! They’re one of the worst things in teh world. People says it so good, but it’s not.
It is always something wrong with them, and they won’t read that file and it can’t read that file, and it’s locked for that kind of files and so on! It is always problems with iPods and iPhones, I promise you, iPhone isn’t something good.
But the poeple who have this shit can be glad. Now they have a good game for it.
Osnic:
1/10, keep trying
from Sega’s twitter: Thx for all the messages about the Sonic CD vid. I have the link & your requests on my list. Will bring it up at our brainstorming meeting.
No, no we don’t. Make it an Xbox Live arcade game.
Ya I want to see another Sega Vintage collection POS. No thanks Rave. I’d rather have a well done iphone port over a filtered thing anyday.
Why not? But I don’t have an iphone so I don’t care.
I’ve got Mega & Gems collection, and no iPod of any kind, (and hate Sonic CD anyways) so I personally don’t care. It seems like this runs pretty well so those who like this are in luck. I’m still holding out for some kind of Knuckles Chaotix port.
Please stick to the console games… even if i have the itouch >.<
Otherwise, Sonic 3 & Knuckles might be nice \O.O/
John Taylor i know…..
Huh he removed the video. I wonder why.
“Could he fix the spin dash in Sonic CD, so its instant like in Sonic 2?”
Go play Sonic CD ++ instead of wondering if Taxman could do that.
Or better yet, try porting it to the iPhone and “fix” it.
This looks very promising… and cool!
