Dev Considering Extra Features
Questions continue to mount toward Sonic Rebirth developer Leon as to when the fully finished Sonic fan game will be available for download again.
You may remember that Rebirth was a marquee title for this year’s SAGE and was made available for users to download late in the expo, but was quickly taken offline after reports poured in from players that the game suffered major gameplay problems, including issues that rendered Rebirth nearly unplayable.
Fielding a question as to when Rebirth will return online, Leon wrote on Sonic Fan Games HQ that he’s not just working on fixing broken features, but he’s also considering adding a few more:
It’s gonna take a while, because I want to fix almost everything and put new extras features like Knuckles.
Aside from the Knuckles remark, there’s no indication how far a reach these new features would have. But the one sentence response confirms that there is no time table for a relaunch of Sonic Rebirth, and it does pose an interesting premise–how much time will be fixing what’s presently broken versus implementing and perfecting these new features? Given the problems the original Rebirth release had, do you think adding more is worth it? Tell us in the comments section below.

Adding more content in lieu of fixing the problems from before… the idea kind of depends on how you feel. If you had been highly awaiting this release, only to find that it’s going to be a while to fix the bugs, and -then- to find it’s gonna take longer because of added features, which will then require bug testing as -well-… Then you might find yourself growing impatient, and irritated, preferring that the bug fixes get done and the game gets released right then and there. ‘To heck with bonus features, I just want the game!’, you might say.
Of course, there’s the other side of the spectrum. This game was released under such high anticipation, and to find that it was riddled with bugs and glitches that were severely impending was probably quite a disappointment. In that respect, the added time to add new content, added features, etc could very well be viewed as a bonus gift/apology from Leon.
So… yeah, it does depend on how you look at it. Personally, I can wait. What I played that -wasn’t- riddled with bugs was quite a nice return to ye land of old, and seeing more bonus content is always interesting. However, I haven’t really touched it since the bonus level of the Bridge stage failed to trigger a game over screen, and refused to relocate me to the main menu after losing all lives. But, seeing what -has- been done… I can be patient. Good luck be with Leon.
I think that adding some new feature would be nice, but the original problems need to be fixed first before adding any new features.
Look, just focus on fixing the game! Worry about the extras later!
Fix the game. Don’t be like SEGA and think new features will make people want it when the core still sucks.
The only “new feature” I can think about that would be worth the wait would be a PSP or Wii port.
Otherwise, I’m glad I downloaded an early copy.
Like a lot of others, I’m patient enough and excited enough to see what will become of this. I say the guy should take some time and really get it sorted out. Sure, there’s always gonna be problems to start with. If the game was “almost completely unplayable” then it’s best he did take it offline. A shame, but really looking forward to this otherwise.
Leon will probably will take like uhh… 1 year to make Knuckles sprites.and fix everything? Is he crazy?
