Feelers Put Out Via Twitter
To this point, the Summer of Sonic conventions have been a recent affair–and one relegated to the UK only.
But the power of your tweets could give cause to another British invasion of sorts, at least getting the gears rolling toward a domestic SoS.
The feelers began to be placed on Thursday via the @sonicgames Twitter account, and this tweet:
Random query, how many of you on the Twitter here would be legit interested in a Summer Of Sonic USA?
As it turns out, the query may not be so random, as demonstrated by tweets, mainly coming from SoE employee and Sonic Wrecks webmaster ArchangelUK. An array of responses from the channel’s couple thousand followers yieled comments later in the day. Those remarks show that there may at least be a push underway to bring the convention stateside–but Sega of America’s cooperation will be necessary to get it done:
Lots of love on here for an SoSUS… okay that just helps when I speak to those above. – AAUK

Okay well its still very WIP but I’ll push forward more with plans for that. Will depend entirely on SOA though!
Again, nothing is set in stone–far from it, it presently appears–but the prospects bear watching. We’ll keep tabs on whether Sonic fans in the United States will finally enjoy a Sonic convention a bit closer to home.

So Europe gets a Sonic convention, as usual the U.S quickly catches on… but as usula the land down under is neglected T_T
Well Japan hasn’t got one either as of now, but that’s not gonna stop me moaning about it. But best of luck and hope to those planning it.
Lol won’t happen. It’s SEGA America, the ones who ignore customer support tickets.

The problem with a US convention is that the US is so much larger than the UK. I suppose many people came from other European countries, too, but those probably weren’t as numerous as all the ones from the UK.
The thing with a US convention is that it would probably need a more central location. Choosing either Los Angeles or New York, likely candidates (I suppose other California cities might be a possible choice other than LA, though) would make it difficult for people on the other side of the country to make it to such an event. Even if they decide on a central location, though, then you have to choose between either the north or the south; Chicago or Dallas, being the mostlikely candidates, with Detroit as another possibility, I suppose. There’s probably a major city directly in the center of the U.S., but I wouldn’t know exactly which city that was, and even then, its not one of the more favored cities.
Ultimately, though, I think if such a thing came into fruition, Los Angeles would be the choice, regardless of the drive time involved. In any case, unless it was a central location either directly in the center, or located in Chicago, I probably wouldn’t be able to attend.
Wow, as soon as the possibility for an American convention opens up, someone has already complained about it not being in their country! There’s no pleasing some people is there? If you want something like this to happen in your country, YOU need to make it happen. The first SoS came about through community support ONLY. There was no Sega involvement apart from AAUK’s singular prescence. It was entirely fan-funded and the strong turn-out then made Sega of Europe get involved. If you want a Summer of Sonic in your country then there’s no stopping the fanbase from said country starting their own SoS! Now stop bloody complaining! Sega of Europe can only do so much; start voicing your opinion to Sega of America or Sega of Australia etc if you want a Sega funded event.
Maybe plan it here in Kansas. We’re in the middle…
SEGA America has bigger problems they need to solve first, setting up a Sonic convention is the least of their worries.
I think basically the fight would be between East coast NY where you’d likely get the bigger crowd, or the West coast which would be closer to SEGA’s HQ over there. It will be interesting to see what develops though; perhaps It’ll mean I don’t need to think of a holiday destination next year? :3
Voicing what Sonic Yoda said, SoS IS a fan event, organised by THE FANS. Therein lies the heredatory problem the US fanbase has because the “big guns” of the community are so dispersed. 2000 positive Twitter responses from 2000 American 11 year-olds isn’t going to get it off the ground. There again the idea of a Sonic convention was something AAUK, Dreadknux and I laughed about three years ago on that fateful day in 2006 over a cup of coffee and a slice of Sonic’s 15th Anniversary birthday cake. Who knows what we’ll have by the time his 20th rolls around.
Maybe Tris you can be one of the catalysts to get this off the ground?
@Tristan: It wasn’t *quite* relgated to the UK as people from the rest of Europe (and beyond) also were in attendence. Regardless of where one hosts Summer of Sonic, there will still be those who complain about it not being in THEIR backyard. Basically, wherever you hold it, you are going to get many complaints from those unable to go.
It amuses me greatly how you all mention ‘drive time’ where as many of us over here in the UK used public transport to and from the venue.
I detect a slight hint of jealousy… but let us not dwell on the matter.
As enticing as it would be to serve as point person for any US Summer of Sonic…seeing as there were near boycotts of SAGE this year for the one week we were the “official” station before SFGHQ pressure on its organizers forced it away from us…I can’t bear to think what would happen if I even expressed a clear interest in organizing a US Summer of Sonic.

If it came to the US I don’t care where it would be at (new york, los angeles, etc.) I would make it my #1 goal to go there!
If it DOES happen, they should hold it in Arizona.
OMFG! I REALLY want the Summer of Sonic to come here to the coolest country in the world: The U.S. of A. The United States of America. SEGA of America! Bring the Summer of Sonic here.
