“Don’t Trust Anything He Says,” notes Community Team Member
It took long enough: Quick on the heels of last week’s announcement of Project Needlemouse, the man who called himself Wentos the Travelling Salesman on 4chan has made brief, but new remarks–months after he first speculated what the next Sonic would contain.
Wentos claims to be a Sega insider, a claim that has never been proven. That may have given cause for a known member of Sega of America to comment on the controversy for the first time.
On Friday morning, NeoGAF member Aaron Strife relayed a brief conversation he claims to have conducted with the mysterious figure to the forum. Though Wentos keeps coy–a stark contrast from his original remarks, he does conclude something most fans have already deduced:

[21:09] Wentos: it did evolve from those preliminary concepts, yes

[21:11] Wentos: but now that it’s announced i’d really rather not jump sega’s gun.

[21:11] me: well, I guess the big question is “are they going to fuck this one up”?
[21:12] Wentos: they can’t afford to, and they’re very well aware of it

[21:14] me: oh, one more thing, because the fan base is being stupid

The publication of that conversation quickly prompted Sega of America community team member RubyEclipse to do one of two things on the same board, depending on how you read the following passage. He either refuted all of Wentos’s remarks thus far, or he may have speculated that there’s a rogue somewhere within Sega:
Don’t trust anything he says as official. His predictions are his own (and honestly more similar to horoscopes than anything else), but he doesn’t work at SEGA or have any way of getting inside information.
That, or he certainly doesn’t value his job as much as he should.
But a lot of what I’ve seen posted from him has been completely off, so I’m totally sure that’s not the case.
In truth, if both are Sega employees (we know for sure one is,) both run some job risk by posting outside of their boundaries and by posting anything other than the company line. But while we still haven’t a clue who Wentos is, we do know Ruby and his status. With that in mind, you may want to take note of that comment he made about Wentos being “completely off.” Though our analysis thus far shows otherwise, if Ruby’s right, by most veteran standards, that isn’t a good thing.
So, months after Wentos surfaced, we have both sides–his, and the official one. Wentos sounds more idealistic and in tune with what many fans actually want, but if Ruby’s rebuttal holds in full, Project Needlemouse may have just become a different beast. Which side do you believe? We’ll run a poll next week, but in the interim, you can tell us in the comments section.

What’s so bad about what Ruby had to say? Ruby’s saying it won’t play like Unleashed; isn’t that a good thing since this should play like the classic games?

Take no notice of Wentos, he’s old news. Ruby was pretty bang on in his description.
There are other things to consider if Ruby’s completely right–mainly whether Sonic will have the only lead role, or whether something else (or something new and not expected) will be a part of this.
Basically, if Ruby is spot on in refuting all of Wentos’s claims, a risk runs of the Sonic Cycle repeating itself. This is why we need more concrete details on this game, stat.

Again, Wentos’ predictions are things anyone could say. I find it funny that whoever this guy is -or these guys are- can get this kind of attention. LOL!
He made the claim that the team working on Unleashed was mostly straight out of college. That’s basically bullshit. Would you care for an example of how far off that claim is? Sachiko Kawamura was an artist for 3D blast, Shinkichi Tanahashi was a character modeler for Space Channel 5, Toshihiro Nagoshi appears in the credits for Daytona USA, Akinori Nishiyama was a game tester for Space Harrier II and went on to be heavily involved in the development of Phantasy Star 4, Makoto Suzuki worked on Christmas NiGHTS as the co-sound producer, Takaaki Saito has been around since SA 1 as well, and the list goes on.
I believe he also claimed that there was going to be a Sonic Riders 3, something that hasn’t happened.
I think you guys should just hold off until SEGA give us any more information. Both Ruby and AAUK have said not to totally trust what Wentos is saying, so rather than go on about ‘The Sonic Cycle’ and if Sonic Team plan on adding more characters or not, just sit it out and take the new information as it comes.
Seriously, everybody’s all paranoid about the “Sonic Cycle”, that it’s going to happen all over again. Relax people, just calm down and take in the info as it comes and it’ll all be okay (basically what bolt said).
Plus, I think Sega is starting to prove themselves worthy enough to make a Genesis-styled game again. I mean look at the Sonic Level Creator! Although it’s rather buggy, it still shows that Sega still knows how Sonic is really supposed to play.
And Tristan, do you really think that it’s a good idea to make a game under the influence of the classic games but make it play like Unleashed? Or what? What are you getting at? Are you saying that if Sega DOES make the game play like the Genesis ones, the Sonic Cycle is going to happen again?
Why is wentos talking like he is some kind of lord or king? Hes probally trying to hide his identity so sega people dont reconise his language. Or he is some kind of nerd who is doing this just for kicks.
What you don’t realize is that he’s actually the Wentos from the game.
@ Osnic: Shadow, Mephles, and Metal Sonic all have the same top-of-the-head shape as Sonic. While I doubt it, it could easilly be any of them as well.

Tristin’s not saying that a Genesis styled Sonic would be bad, he’s saying that if what Ruby and Archangel say is true, that everything Wentos said was untrue, we’d be getting a lot of things we hate. New characters, a ton of playable characters (I like that though), Sonic as NOT the main character (or secondary main), and some funky new gimmic.
Azukara, here’s my logic.
In this context, Wentos said that Sega is well aware they cannot screw this one up, that the next Sonic would run in the style of the 2D portions of Unleashed, and that there won’t a requirement to play as someone else. Those are the key points I get from Wentos’s speculation.
Ruby (and I suppose AAUK now) has refuted many of those claims, though no one’s being clear on exactly which claims. If that’s not a “company line” response and they are indeed correct, that tells me there’s potential for a gimmick, or a new character, or some such thing–and if any of that is the case, there will be problems.
A game can be made, 2D, even in the Genesis style, and there’s plenty of room for error. There just won’t be room for tolerating anything like that for Project Needlemouse.

@Phos: Somebody said pretty much exactly what Wentos said regarding that during I think E3 of 2008 when they were trying to hype up Unleashed. The team had a lot of new blood, or was straight out of college, or something.
MOST of Wentos’s predictions were built off paying particularly rapt attention to development of Unleashed and Chronicles, and making easy guesses based off of conjecture, followed with a dash of telling us what we wanted to hear, and either way, he turned out to be RIGHT, so why crucify the guy for it?
If he’s lying, I think half of it was just so he could say Ben Anadac was full of bullshit, which, quite frankly back then, REALLY needed to be said.
I grasp Tristan’s arguement, I just think it’s flawed. Ruby is saying Wentos is full of shit about being a rep from Sega. This doesn’t mean Wentos’s predictions are false, just that his predictions would be invalid. Meanwhile, before the refutation of his statements…we didn’t know what would happen, either.
So, either way.,..we’re going off speculation. There’s no more reason to be pessimistic or optomistic today than yesterday, because this is all speculation and hearsay. We DO know that Sega has committed to a classic 2D Sonic game, and the new level editor has a guide that implies knowledge of classic Sonic gameplay. That’s th only real news today, so Ima go over there…

Wentos is only a fanboy who tries to believe for the favored opinions. But now it’s not so favorable.
Lord, are there still people that actually BELIEVE Wentos? Official people from SEGA said not to believe this guys claims, and so thats what should be done. Otherwise, you can sometimes just be jumping to conclusions and making a fool out of yourself.

Anyway, one thing I will say is I don’t blame Wentos for saying Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes are the lowest budgeted Sonic games.
