Latest Wii Update Bricking Systems, Modded or Not

Nintendo WiiNumerous Reports of Problems with v4.2

If you have a Wii that’s modded, downloading the latest system update Nintendo has provided for the Wii, if not with care, can be a problem.  Now, it appears some of those who have kept their consoles out of the modding landscape will also bear some of that burden.

The problem stems around the latest append, version 4.2.  There are numerous reports that upon initiating the system update, the download either doesn’t complete or is corrupted somewhere along the line.  That renders the system inoperable.  What makes this different is how lockout accounts are coming in not only from those who have modded Wiis, but but those who have completely clean systems.

The problem lies within what the update does.  The 4.2 append changes the Wii’s bootloader.  If the append doesn’t patch properly or isn’t complete, the system won’t start.

As with many appends of late, Nintendo issued the patch in order to lock out homebrew or otherwise modded changes to the system.

If you have a non-modded system, you are urged to contact Nintendo tech support.  If under warranty, the company will repair your system at no charge.  And, by the way, several homebrewers have already circumvented the security checks this append was support to implement, and new versions of items such as The Homebrew Channel have already been released.

Holy F*** already? DAMN that was fast. About the Homebrew that is. However my Wii didn’t brick so yeah, I’m good.

See, this is the problem. Instead of getting the modders, they inconveniance their loyal customers. I don’t bootleg new games out of principle, and I find it distasteful. But to be honest, it’s not worth the effort to go after them.

Epic Mickey makes up for it though.

I don’t care about the updates. I’m not going to update my Wii to 4.2. My Wii isn’t modded or something. But I don’t want to brcik my Wii and what does the v. 4.2 anyway!?
I only update my system if I really need it. And most of the time, you don’t need to update your system. If my Wii says I can’t do somthing cus I haven’t updated my Wii, I’ll go and update my Wii, if not I’m not updating. I hate updates for menus if it isn’t something really new and good that the menu needs!

Well I guess it’s a good thing my internet is off at the house huh? Knowing my luck, my Wii would’ve bricked.

Regardless of whether you have some warranty or not, Nintendo will pay for your console if they are the ones who messed it up. Like with Brawl, it did something to my Wii, so Nintendo fixed it.

No, 360 had (and still has, somewhat) it’s share of RRoD.

Wow. Good think I have my Wii set up so it does not automatically update the system.

Well, I feel I must add to the discussion. I don’t have WiFi so I don’t update – I’m not big on the online experience – so I haven’t updated for well over a year. Frankly, with the battery recharging and all, I just went back to playing PS2 and GC.

For Christmas though, I wanted to introduce my kids to the Beatles and bought Beatles Rock Band. After spending the better part of an afternoon unpacking all the equipment and putting it together, came the moment of truth. The disc was unrecognized by my Wii and in its place was System Update (on the menu).

So, I updated. This was taking what seemed an abnormally long time and then – BLACK screen – completely dead. I couldn’t believe it. Since then it is just taking up space. I am SO annoyed – I’ve invested in extra controllers, balance board, instruments and whatnot and now it’s all junk.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that dual layer discs can be tricky but really! I don’t have a modified wii so I’m at a loss as to what the problem could be.

Nintendo France (where I live) hasn’t bothered to respond to any emails so I’m REALLY disappointed – I always used to root for Nintendo against the more sophisticated systems.

Anyway, has anyone else had this problem with Rock Band or dual layer discs? And what do you do about it?
