Just Another, More Expensive way to Play the Classic
Sonic 2 is on EBay. What makes this particular copy different–and perhaps justifying its current asking bid on EBay of $219 plus shipping–is that this particular copy is running on arcade hardware.
The auction is being run out of Germany, and if you win it, you’ll get the cartridge, and the board on which it runs, the Sega Mega-Play. Based on the Mega Drive / Genesis architecture, it was the successor to Sega of Europe’s Mega-Tech architecture. It never saw official release in North America.
Since the Mega-Play is a JAMMA sanctioned machine, you’ll get an official JAMMA connector. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear as if the auction comes with the joystick needed to play this copy of Sonic 2. Perhaps only arcade enthusiasts apply, or the Sonic research community. In any case, it’s a rare find, and at a reasonable price, all things considered. Take a look at the photo of the game in action below–and note the lack of “time” on the HUD.

Is this what they used to play Sonic 2 on that awful Nick Arcade show?
Man, that kid was bad at Sonic 2. Who can’t get 50 rings on Emerald Hill 1?!

It has already been found. Sonic Retro has all the information.
