Lou Albano, of Mario Fame, Dead at 76

Lou-AlbanoWas the Man who played Mario in 1989

A little piece of gaming legend has died.

“Captain” Lou Albano, the wrester turned actor, passed away today.  He was 76 years old.  Most in pop culture will remember him for his decades-long involvement with wrestling that merited his hall of fame status, his television appearances ranging from the WWF (now WWE) and Miami Vice, and his wild facial hair.

But the gaming community–particularly the older crowd–will remember Captain Lou most for temporarily shaving off that goatee to play the role of Mario in 1989′s The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the hybrid live action and animated series produced by DIC Entertainment.  Not only did he play Mario in the flesh, he also gave Mario his animated voice for the series.

Albano’s entertainment legacy will live on, not only with the DVD release of the series, but also through the NRBQ song Captain Lou.
