Was the Man who played Mario in 1989
A little piece of gaming legend has died.
“Captain” Lou Albano, the wrester turned actor, passed away today. He was 76 years old. Most in pop culture will remember him for his decades-long involvement with wrestling that merited his hall of fame status, his television appearances ranging from the WWF (now WWE) and Miami Vice, and his wild facial hair.
But the gaming community–particularly the older crowd–will remember Captain Lou most for temporarily shaving off that goatee to play the role of Mario in 1989′s The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the hybrid live action and animated series produced by DIC Entertainment. Not only did he play Mario in the flesh, he also gave Mario his animated voice for the series.
Albano’s entertainment legacy will live on, not only with the DVD release of the series, but also through the NRBQ song Captain Lou.

Oh no!
That’s sad, RIP dude, RIP…
It was only recently that I got the box set and saw an episode that didnt have the live action segment cut out. (As it seemed to be a lot here in the UK) I just knew him as the guy from the credits until then.
This is a real shame though, he made a great Mario.
RIP
Legendary wrestler and best damn Mario there has ever been. R.I.P. captain.
I loved all the Mario animated series he voiced in…RIP Lou
Oh no…That sucks.
He was the best VA…. for the show.
NO!
Hey there paizanos! Do the Mario!
He’s doing the Mario somewhere…
Let’s take a moment of silence for Captain Lou Albano. May he rest in peace and continue to entertain kids and gamers well beyond his earthly passing.
Now do the Mario in commemoration of his awesomeness.
You lived a good life, sir. Rest in peace.
DO THE MARIO.
Lou, believe it or not, lived longer than most wrestlers.
aww…
I remember him, i watched those shows now and again and now the poor mans gone
RIP man…..
Hope you had a great one Lou – heck if you take on such a range of careers from wrestling to acting Mario, then I’m sure you Carpe Diem’d to the max.
@Tailsthehedgehog: hey, do do dodo do…. lol. do you think that quick mario song note wouldv`e cheered some up bud?
“do the mario!”
@Blueblur: Easily.
I’m not sure what it’s for, but speaking of mario tunes I love the one that starts when Mario gets a growing mushroom thing. Actualyl I’m not sure what it’s for, but I know it starts fast a bleepy, but then at five seconds in just starts banging away.
