Says “The Fan Base needs to Seriously Grow Up”
Richard Kuta, the man who put his Sonic fan film project on an indefinite hiatus this week, told TSSZ News exclusively that he and his family were victims of harassment ranging from sexually explicit phone calls to death threats, and that he has involved police in the matter.
“My reputation has been brutally shattered to where my career has no launching pad,” Kuta claims of the harassment.
Speaking only to TSSZ News, Kuta detailed some of the problems he has encountered in developing the project, and the end result of them–upon consultation of his team members, the Sonic fan film has been put on “indefinite” hold, and he will be closing down his design studio, RK Dezignz, after 10 years of operation. We had speculated in our previous article whether the film had hit another legal hurdle despite its newly formed fan appreciation status, but that does not appear to be the case.
Kuta explained how all of this came to fruition with the release of the fan film’s trailer on YouTube.
“Ever since I released the trailer to the public, I have been the victim of malicious attacks, blackmail, death threats, and crank calls,” Kuta said. “One individual felt compelled to sabotage my RK Dezignz, harass my friends/family, and bring in a coalition of trolls to stalk my every move.”
Among the elevated attacks, Kuta claims, were public posts of his address and phone number across the Internet. That led to a string of sometimes sexually explicit phone calls made to him and his family.
“It escalated to the point where it was endangering lives and taking its toll on my sanity,” Kuta explained. “I was mortified.”
Kuta cited to TSSZ News one such call his older sister fielded, which was filled with lewd comments. It was then that he involved authorities. After a few days of investigation, police identified the individual, whom we cannot reveal because of his 15 year old age.
“The idea of how someone that young can cause so much mental damage…it’s disgusting,” Kuta said.
Though disdain for Kuta reaches beyond the Sonic community, he appears to place most of the blame for these troubles on it.
“It’s ridiculous how much hate is circulated around a video game character and how people are willing to go through great lengths to destroy someone’s life since their perception of the project doesn’t agree with them,” Kuta said. “I may still hold an affinity for Sonic, but the fan base needs to seriously grow up.”
Even before the stakes were ratcheted up, he endured plenty of animosity. From vulgar comments on his work to faux accounts bearing his name, Kuta–despite his best efforts of appeal to fandom with the film project–was not held in well regard. He moved on, but the sudden involvement of police was enough for him to reconsider.
“With all the turmoil that erupted, I honestly hope these douchebags are satisfied with what they accomplished and now realize why Matt Sullivan quit his efforts,” Kuta said, referring to the same Matt Sullivan of Simpsons and Family Guy fame who announced last year he would try to revive the SatAM story of Sonic the Hedgehog into a new series. Sullivan had a pitch, but hasn’t been heard from since.
“I never encountered this type of conflict in my life and this really illustrates how much the fan base has degenerated over the last few years,” Kuta explained.
Perhaps most disturbing in all this is not the damage done to the Sonic fan film, but possibly to Kuta’s career aspirations as an artist.
“It’s really depressing that after 10 years of running a successful design firm, that I’m forced to shut it down due to the stubborn, selfish immaturity of the Sonic community,” Kuta said. “I’m 28 years old and it’s embarrassing how I had to go through this affliction just because I wanted to branch out from graphic design and engage in something endearing.”

I knew this guy on dA, and everyday, there’d be terrible messages on his page. I truly feel sorry for him. He’s not “making an excuse” to not finish the movie. This is why the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase is truly the dumbest in the world.
The hate stuff he gets on DA and stuff is all uncalled for, but his statements that he was to go to Sega about all this stuff, and how something was REALLY in the works by Sega or Universal or whatever was truly ridiculous. I know he’s past all that, but the problem is that he’s trying to “save” a franchise by bringing back and making a film off of a TV series that wasn’t really that good to begin with, and DEFINITELY wasn’t what made Sonic famous whatsoever. It was like the Mario movie; it added all this dark complex stuff to something colorful and simple and cartoony, and tried to make lots of drama and/or a gigantic storyline about it, doing just about all the characters wrong/making up some as they went.
Except the fact that the Mario movie was actually pretty good, and SatAM… not so much. I don’t wanna watch a Sonic show that’s really about Princess Sally Acorn.
I too knew this man on DA. It’s horrible what these people have done to him and his family… Now, I never liked SatAM, and I didn’t support the fanfilm, but I wasn’t against it either. This fanbase is certainly the most immature and stupid fanbase of them all. Not all of them are bad, but sadly, the majority are… It’s absolutely the worst to hear that a man’s entire career is going downhill all because he wanted to make a fan-film of a series he loved, and it was all caused by the fanbase the series belonged to.
And yes, ED needs to be taken down, it’s one of the most bigoted, perverted, and disgusting websites ever created, to those who think it’s funny, obviously need their head examined. It’s sick. All it does is hurt others, and if you think it’s funny, then you think that hurting others and doing them harm is funny too. And that is as far from “good” or “Christian” as you can get.

Yeah, definitely. Don’t blame it on us. I know the fanbase has gotten extremely dumb lately with newschoolhomos and Shadow fangirls everywhere, but I’m sure we wasn’t the people to cause this. 4chan is the obvious answer since they’ve been reported before to do this (and so has Encylopaedia Dramatica, but it’s basically run by the same people). I’m near definite it was them. Just because the wide majority of us are dumb doesn’t mean you can go and pin the blame. =\
@AKR: I’m sorry for responding like that in my first post. That was sort of overboard for me to respond like that.
I must reiterate, this was NEVER a SatAM movie. It was a SONIC movie, meaning it compromised every element from the franchise. Games, Cartoons and Comics. The first movie was centered around Sonic 1,2,3 and SatAM and the sequels advanced the story bringing in other characters and landscapes. If you remove certain characters and familiar environments, it will alienate a portion of the fan base. You can disagree with certain characters and such, but you must also respect and acknowledge the fans that do appreciate those continuities. There were actually fans that hated the idea of adding in badniks cause they wanted just Swatbots. I may like SatAM and Archie, but one continuity must not overshadow everything else. Put yourself in the mindset of a regular audience and what they wanna see in a Sonic movie. Everything they grew up with and how its evolved into the franchise it is today. It should appease EVERYONE. The sequel was more Knuckles-centric and even incorporates the Chaotix. So trust me, it’s not strictly based on SatAM.

Regardless of whose involved, I just wanna see this get made. I appreciate the suggestion, however I still have the drive to press on but I’m concerned of the future pitstops Ill encounter, especially if this does become a Hollywood release. It would be disastrous if the other people involved were harassed cause they were associated with my project =(
Not to get sidetracked, but I came across an article regarding Warren Spector’s future ideas for that Epic Mickey saga. He plans to not only make a movie about it, but also a theme park ride. Talk about ambitious, pie-in-sky ideas. I strongly admire people like that cause it shows how motivation, creativity and persistence can one day bring something special to world. In college, I always conveyed that drive and hoped to apply my acquired skills into projects I only dreamed about. While the apathetic slackers wanted to coast on by with an average grade, I was a visionary in all my school assignments cause I actually cared about my work. Anyway, this will probably be the last longwinded post I make here. I just wanted to say my peace and vent my frustrations before I decide on what to do from these crossroads.

I have a fangame project I’m trying to make known as “Project FreeRunner” and I want to complete it too, and I have high expectations for it with pie-in-the-sky ideas as well. I didn’t mean to go all out on you about SatAM or anything SatAM/Freedom Fighters-related. Keep on trying to get it done,because I understand the pain.
First off– Kuta’s age is a fucking moronic reason to say that he should grow out of cartoons. Newsflash, the majority of the people who create all of the cartoons, comics, games and crap that we and other generations grew up on are probably older than Kuta. The love of these mediums and the characters within them transcends age, and anyone citing some stupid-ass age cut-off is being overwhelmingly immature.
Now, with that said…. I can’t say this wasn’t brought on himself. He lied about Sega approving the film, lied that it was in mainstream production by some non-existent company, apparently stole some character designs, cites anyone who doesn’t like his project or provides constructive criticism as horrible people, and is yet again calling out the entirety of the fanbase he tried to please.

Of course, I don’t condone what that 15 year old did, assuming this story is true of course (I mean, we’re talking about Kuta on TSSZ), but that doesn’t negate the fact that you shat on the fanbase a great deal. And after years of being had by official outlets, we’re tired of it. A little honesty and dignity would’ve worked wonders and probably would have saved you all of the trouble.

it is completely shocking that people would go to such lengths to make sure that a FAN-FILM of a VIDEO GAME CHARACTER would not have a chance for others to see.
I’m some of the people that was looking forward to this, i’m a Die-Hard-Sonic-Fan and basically if it has Sonic in it, i’ll love it no matter what.

Yeah, I haven’t got much to say here other than to recommend not getting too attached to videogames or the internet to the exclusion of other things, like family, exercise, studying, other hobbies, and rest. Follow your passions, believe in your dreams, make them happen, learn and grow and be happy. You’re not perfect, and neither am I. To expect perfection from yourself is unreasonable and tiresome, and it will drain all of your energy and drive. But don’t get too attached, especially not to what people on the internet say about you or about what you like, whether they be Anonymous or ED, YouTube or Deviantart. Forget about them. Don’t feed the trolls. None of them can or care to do what you can, so it’s up to you.
As for the marred record and ED article, that’s not easy to deal with. I know what it’s like to worry and ruminate over deep-seated regrets in one’s personal history, but I also know that you can’t dwell on them or let them eat you up inside. Sometimes, you’ve just gotta find a way to turn those weaknesses into strength or an opportunity to enrich yourself, become smarter and start again. It ain’t the end of the world, so don’t lose heart and don’t give up your passion if it means something to you.

Combing through most of these comments has made me realize that I shoudnt have profile the entire fanbase. In the heat of the moment I was just venting my anger cause it seems that everywhere I turn, theres an array of hate that circulates around this franchise. Its only this decade where I started to notice how divided the fanbase really is and how people will rage wars on each other cause they cant accept others opinions. Remember the whole voice acting war? Ryan vs Jason? I was neutral on the subject since I cared about gameplay but that pointless fued escalated to where people were even threatening the voice actors. Sound familar? Its beyond my comprehension why Sonic is the cause of all this unwarrented hate. Back in the 90s, people in the online community respected one another cause they knew whatever continuity they subscribed to, where all here for the same purpose. Supporting Sonic the Hedgehog. This whole segregation against SatAM, Sonic X and such is just…..stupid. But to be blunt, I apologize for being irrational and I shouldnt point the blame on ALL Sonic fans. Some of you are actually pretty cool to talk to and I guess that eluded me during my clouded judgement. As for internet bullies and ED, I was ignoring it till it reached outside of the internet and conflicted with my daily life. Reading hurtful text on a screen is one thing, but when youre out with friends or at work and you recieve threatening voice mails on your phone, you feel trapped and vulnerable. @Bliz : I didnt lie about anything. Certain people took things out of context and miscontrued them to where it was difficult for me to untangle this mess. I have physical evidence to prove my claims of everything that transpired from the initial stages of this project to its current stages. Studio passes, letters/emails, the list goes on. Plus if you knew anything about film production, it takes a TEAM of people to create something of that magnitude. You cant expect ONE person alone to engage in something thts overwhelmingly impossible to do without assistance. Thats like saying Spielberg stole the JAWs robot since he didnt physically create it. Or Lucas takes credit for the special FX in Star Wars even though he alone never created them. I never stolen anyones artwork unless youre refering to that assinine incident from 2007 where I referenced a drawing and people got bent out of shap over it. But since were on that topic, isnt anyone that draws Sonic fanart stealing from Sega? Technically, cause its a copyrighted character. If that were the case, SEGA wouldve shut down all the fan projects on youtube, newgrounds and DeviantArt. But they didnt cause theyre smart enough to know they would lose huge portion of support. So dont you think my scenario is a bit hypocrtical? Anyway, due to that ridiculous controversy, I scrapped the drawings and started from scratch hiring new artists.

Well, just take this into consideration then, it doesn’t matter how long you put this project on hold. As soon as YOU start it back up, you’re going to be dealing with the exact same problems again. If these problems are too much for you to handle now, then you aren’t going to be able to deal with them in the future either.

Oh, not to contradict my words about wasting time here, but cartoons are more than applicable for all ages. Some of the greatest people in the past century loved cartoons… maybe it’s the world’s misconception of manhood. That is, that once your a man, you don’t live the best you can be. You slack off, and don’t be as good as you were as a kid. Instead of good, take taking the bad. Instead of watching good television, becoming seduced to viewing pornography and blood and gore.

I write reviews, right, and thoug hI haven’t gotten any angry comments yet, I’m gearing myself for the day when somebody say’s that I have no idea what I’m doing and should get back in the fridge. Kuta, I completely agree that everything’s gone too far but you shouldn’t give up – haveing a tough skin is a vital part of being, well, us! Real champions don’t always win, but they always keep getting up, dusting themselves off and making amends. Don’t throw away ten years of work for a bunch of losers that sit around watching trash TV, getting drunk, never got past yr 10 and have nothing better to do than call a stranger and make them feel bad because of their efforts.

I don’t know what to say anymore. Even I don’t feel exactly good in this fanbase anymore. While there are large numbers of people who are good, there a few that make the community as a whole uncomfortable.
I’m not quitting this fanbase, but I’m certainly disappointed with the few who have caused this BS.

Tell me about it! I’m SICK of people assuming it’s us, the Sonic fans, b/c we’re notorious for “bayeeng duh wurz funbass eva!!!11!!!1″. For the record, just b/c he supposedly had death threaths and such (I can’t assume if he’s telling the truth or not b/c I DON’T KNOW HIM!) doesn’t mean you directly point the finger at us b/c we’re notorious for getting into agruements over little things like Jason vs. Griffith, SonSal vs. SonAmy, SatAM vs. Games, old vs. new….you name it. But, I don’t really think we would go that far.
In fact, how many of us knew this guy was making a movie anyway? Probably a few until that article from last month appear about a fanfilm. I remember that half of you guys didn’t know this was happenning and when you did, you all stated your opinions while two-three people knew about this guy’s history. That’s why I think it’s ridiculous to assume that we’re the main reason for these accusations. Half of us probably don’t even know who he is. Most of us do realize that we have lives other than Sonic in general.

Once again, I can’t judge you for telling the truth or not b/c I don’t know anything about you except for what I read. All I can say is that IF this REALLY happened to you then I’m sorry that some 15 yr old this this. He could have had mutiple email addresses and accounts to make it look like he was different people from the fanbase. I mean, there are people on youtube that do this kind of stuff. The best thing to do is leave them alone. I notice that people who do attack only continue if you respond back and when they realize you are serious by not ever responding (not even the first time), they’ll quickly go away and find some other victim b/c they’re “not having fun”. You can’t just point fingers b/c you assume it.
On the other hand, if you are lying, you really should be ashamed of YOURSELF. I’m looking at this both ways b/c I’m not sure and still skeptical about this story.
But, either way, you brought this upon yourself not b/c of what other people have said before me….it’s because you made a very unprofessional move in your past. Usually if someone is making a movie and is/isn’t sure of it getting the ok, they wouldn’t just plaster themselves over the internet and say they were making a movie. That starts up controversy. The next time you decide to go back and do something like a movie, just don’t even mention a word about making it until the movie is about to be announced to the public by media. That’s what the guy for Epic Mickey did. You referred to him earlier, but he didn’t do the same thing. He waited until the RIGHT TIME to mention this and he had official confirmation from Disney/Pixar about doing this. He didn’t wait until he had a “pre-green light” to announce it. It’d be WAY too early to mention. In fact, most companies announce this kind of stuff when they’re almost 3 years into production b/c either way, it takes 3 years to make a movie be it 2D/3D and when they are, THAT’S when they leak out a little bit or artwork, plot, clips, etc. Even for video games like Sonic. I notice that SEGA only mentions stuff when they’re almost a year away from releasing a product. It’s the same for the Project Needlemouse thing. You tell the audience info bit by bit.
Point is, don’t make the same mistake if you attempt this kind of thing. I might get flamed for stating all these thoughts, but I’m just giving helpful advice and constructive criticism which is also what you’ll face in the industry.

the sonic community needs to relax. and kuta should stay out of public eye for awhile. lets just be gald that SEGA did not come after the fan community with law suits concerning the mascot character. like kuta’s concept or loathe of the fan movie, i think that most people should not be going to far beyond an opinion and delving in harrassent. you know murder, stalking. you know real life? Sonic is just a 2d cartoon video game mascot character. its simple like his vid support it. if not ignore it. it really is simple as that.
