It’s Still Alive…and It’s Still Beautiful
The bad news is that Unreal Tournament 2004 mod Ashura: Dark Reign is still far from completion, so says Dekrayzis, the lead designer on the project.
The good news is that the project is still going strong, and according to an update post from yesterday, the past month been full of “inspiration,” in his words.
Their gain is also ours, as we get to see several new screenshots from the game. Of the eight we have below, seven are brand new from yesterday and are from Angel Island Redux. The eighth shot is a bit older but overlooked–it’s from late September, and the screenshot is only noted as “3 Mile Run.” They’re all shaping up to be fantastic, and if the gameplay matches the visuals, we could have a new and very high bar set for 3D SFGs for quite some time.

This game looks really cool, but I don’t have UT2004…
This design looks pretty good for a fan made game. The environment and the way how it’s designed reminds me of Sonic Adventure’s Emerald Coast w/ a little bit of SA2′s Green Forest.
Ever consider a more intelligent implementation of images? Why do users need to click to be redirected to another page (with more ads I might add) in order to be able to click on a picture again to see it full size?
I have the demo but I can,t start the mod,can anyone help me
Looking very good for a fangame, though, what I don´t like is the controls, it´s the same thing as with Blitz Sonic… I don´t wanna use a mouse, I wanna use my Gamepad!
Then again … I haven´t tried to use one on the demo version of ashura yet! :-/
But yeah, in this games case I can understand the control scheme because it´s based on a Ego Shooter, but in Blitz Sonic´s case the control scheme is just badly choosen in my opinion.
But yeah, still looking good! ^^ I have my problems with the demoversion, especially the lillypad jumping part with the toxic water, that´s insanely hard, I always get a game over screen there, I hope that has been redesigned by now a little, maybe with bigger lillypads…!?

Hey guys, BL here, former member of the ADR team (and soon to return if all goes well). If any of you are wondering what’s taking us so long, it’s because Dekrayzis has been carrying the whole mod single-handedly for quite some time now due to a drastic shortage of staff (notably on the coding and animating department, the latter of which I’m sure is evident in our previous gameplay vids). I could go on and on about the crap Dek’s had to put up with and what we’re lacking in lately, but for a change I thought I’d put it simply: we need more team members, simple as that.
Thanks for the article in any case though, it’s a nice morale boost and I’m sure Dek would like to see this.
@Maya: Just wait until you get up to Eggman. I can personally vouch for him being a nightmare to take down, and it certaintly makes the lilypads seem like a pussy challenge by comparison. By god it was fun though.
Still looks too linear, and I’m still annoyed that they’re still using that pallet glitch as though it’s a character.
