Video: Daytona USA Becomes Sega Racing Classic

Picture 1But it’s HD, right?  Not Really

Apparently, Sega has had so much success re-releasing Sonic to the masses ad nauseam, they’re going to try doing the same thing with another one of their classic franchises: Daytona USA.

But because Sega doesn’t hold the proper licenses for it anymore, it will fall under a new name: Sega Racing Classic.  You’ve probably heard about the title for some time, but only today, with thanks to Sega Nerds, has video surfaced of the remake in action.

The video of  Dinosaur Canyon, which is below, tells the real story–and it’s not a very good one.  Instead of a full-on HD remix, SRC looks to be just like the original Daytona without all the licensing, shoehorned into 16×9 with small visual improvements–not really enough to be considered HD outside of an upconvert.  Sega purists will be quick to note that Takenobu Mitsuyoshi’s famous cry of “Daytona” is absent, replace with what sounds like the more generic remix used in Daytona USA: Champion Circuit Edition for the Sega Saturn.

Though racing enthusiasts are holding out hope for a home console release, as it stands, this appears to merely be a replacement for the up to 15 year old Daytona cabinets that still dot arcades around the world.  Do you think Sega could have done more with SRC?  Take a look at the video below, and let us know in the comments.
