No Wii HD, Says NoA President

Nintendo WiiFils-Aime Shuts Down Rumors in New Interview

If Nintendo does have an HD console up its sleeve, it won’t be under the Wii moniker.

That’s according to a Game Trailers TV interview conducted with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.  The figurehead shot down widespread Internet rumors that an HD edition of Nintendo’s widely popular console would be hitting the market soon.  Many websites started pegging Nintendo’s next console to hit stores either next year or in 2011–and that could still happen, but this affirms the lack of any link to the current generation console.

According to the Kotaku transcription:

Reggie: Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don’t know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.

Keighley: It’s not coming, period?

Reggie: No.

This is significance for Sonic fans on this announcement as it relates to Project Needlemouse.  The current tout on what little information we have on the next Sonic suggests it will be HD only.  That theoretically leaves Wii users out of the loop, since the Wii is not an HD console.  If Nintendo is planning something completely different that is HD, the point is moot for Nintendo faithful who will likely purchase the new console anyway, opening up some possibilities.  But if Nintendo doesn’t have a new console planned for a while, Wii owners may be shut out of Project Needlemouse.
