No Wii HD, Says NoA President

Nintendo WiiFils-Aime Shuts Down Rumors in New Interview

If Nintendo does have an HD console up its sleeve, it won’t be under the Wii moniker.

That’s according to a Game Trailers TV interview conducted with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.  The figurehead shot down widespread Internet rumors that an HD edition of Nintendo’s widely popular console would be hitting the market soon.  Many websites started pegging Nintendo’s next console to hit stores either next year or in 2011–and that could still happen, but this affirms the lack of any link to the current generation console.

According to the Kotaku transcription:

Reggie: Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don’t know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.

Keighley: It’s not coming, period?

Reggie: No.

This is significance for Sonic fans on this announcement as it relates to Project Needlemouse.  The current tout on what little information we have on the next Sonic suggests it will be HD only.  That theoretically leaves Wii users out of the loop, since the Wii is not an HD console.  If Nintendo is planning something completely different that is HD, the point is moot for Nintendo faithful who will likely purchase the new console anyway, opening up some possibilities.  But if Nintendo doesn’t have a new console planned for a while, Wii owners may be shut out of Project Needlemouse.

Wow. I know a lot of Nintendo fans will be very displeased with this news….

    Doesn’t bother me, though.

AngelJump: Yep. And your’e totally right!

  3. Osnic on November 6th, 2009 2.12 pm

    Well, I don’t care. I have 360, which has HD. So I don’t care.

And Reggie….that name just sound so… I don’t know. It feels more lika a girl name. Wow, I had that Reggie, I hate everyone on Nintendo. Lol, I hate nrealy everything about Nintendo. SHIT! I’m a hater! Eeerrr, too much sugar…

But Nintendo is seriously not so good anymore, only reason I bought Wii was for other games not from Nintendo. But, well. All the casuals buy Wii, and it sells much. But it dosen’t mean that Nintendo dosen’t suck nowadays.

Well, If you want good games this generation, I would recomend a 360. But buy a fan for your 360 and clean it so ther’s no dust and your 360 will live long.
Or buy a PS3, which is the best console.

    Lol, long comment FTW! XD

Werehog: Wolf, realax. You will get a new Nintendo console soon. ;)

@Osnic: Reggie has a nice name! It’s easy to remember and is just beutiful! I love Nintendo! They are awesome! :D

And I loved that interview! But why do they always dub gud!? It’s annoying. What’s wrong with subtitles!? Huu… Anyway. Awesome! But it’s sad that we have to wait some more until the Wii HD comes out. :(

  6. Sonikku Master on November 6th, 2009 4.57 pm

Why wait for a HD Wii when you can get a 360 or a PS3?

  7. SonicForTheWin on November 6th, 2009 5.01 pm

    I’ve got a PS3 so I don’t really care.

  8. Spark on November 6th, 2009 5.23 pm

He’s right, there’s no Wii HD. The next Nintendo console will have a different name :)

  9. Quarxyz on November 6th, 2009 5.51 pm

    @Spark
    It should be called SWii

  10. Keydown on November 6th, 2009 5.55 pm

Well thats okay. I own a PS3 so it doesnt bother me.

  11. Edwin Shy on November 6th, 2009 6.48 pm

I really don`t care I like how the Wii is

  12. Scartillery on November 6th, 2009 6.54 pm

Well, I knew that there would be no Wii HD, because it would BE RIDICULOUSLY expensive given the Wii’s current price-tag despite not having HD graphic’s

Natal and PS3 MotionEye are addons to already expensive consoles and aren’t necessary. Sad to say, but if the Next conxole is not a Wii successor, then Nintendo may no longer have a unique selling point to casuals so I really don’t know

    Project needlemouse FTW though

    peace!!

Got a PS3. Feels good, brah.

Already got a Wii too. Of course I play it all the time what with it softmodded and all. Stick in my external hd and insta-gaems!

  14. serpx on November 6th, 2009 7.09 pm

    Shouldn’t be a surprise.

  15. MayaTemple on November 6th, 2009 8.37 pm

They could still release it on Wii. Most Wii games have higher textures than needed for a possible upscaling/HD console that makes use of them. I mean even if not HD, updated graphics with great looking sprites OR textures would still be no problem. You guys make to much fuzz about a resolution!
In needlemouse´s case, NOTHING has been confirmed! Great Artwork would still be great even if its in a lower resolution, it´s not like they use Mega Drive like resolution! Seen any of the great looking 2D games on the Wii like for example a Boy and his Blob or Wario Shake it (I think that´s how it´s called), they look awesome guys, don´t make such a fuzz about a resolution! … my god…

  16. TailstheHedgehog on November 6th, 2009 9.59 pm

Releasing the game on only two platforms (360/PS3) might give SEGA extra time to polish and buff.

  17. EEE on November 7th, 2009 1.47 am

    I call BS.
They’ll probably use bluray and say “we said we weren’t doing “HD”.”

  18. Soul Gauge on November 7th, 2009 3.22 am

TailstheHedgehog makes a good point, actually.

  19. Zink120 on November 7th, 2009 6.00 am

    @ Tails and Soul
In theory yes, but it didn’t work with Unleashed did it? The Wii/PS2 version were headed up by a sub-studio, the one that did the Advance and Rush series. So it’s the same number of platform as before. What they need is time to get this right. Be patient, because the longer you wait, the better it will be. As soon as a trailer with gameplay comes out, it starts a sort of countdown in the fans minds as they get impatient.
I really hope they get this right. As it’s 2D, this is almost his last chance for a comeback, they’re serious about this one! If it doesn’t do well, he may be forever doomed to be a character that was once a great figure in the industry, that faded away into rubbushness. Noone here wants that (I’d assume, lol). I just want him to be awesome again… :-[

Guys, the bext Nintendo console WILL be in HD, but it won’t have the Wii name. Thats what Reggie means.

  21. LT13 on November 7th, 2009 7.26 am

    I meant “the next”

  22. udx on November 7th, 2009 11.00 am

I’d rather they not release a Wii HD, simply because of the recession going on across the globe.

  23. Rolo on November 7th, 2009 3.43 pm

Oh well. No HD isn’t really that much of a big deal. Wii games don’t look that great anyway. About the only benefit you would get would be to see your Mii in HD across all the crappy family fun games that get churned out every week or so
    . Whoopdy F^*&ing Doo.

  24. DoctorEggman on November 8th, 2009 9.22 pm

Wii HD would be stupid. We have the Wii. Calling the next console “Wii HD” would not work, and HD would probably have upped the resolution standard by then.

  25. Cody Collins (Azukara) on November 9th, 2009 9.17 am

Nintendo always tries to cover thier plans up by denying something they have exists. So, take it with a grain of salt. However, I still believe it’d be better for them to make a new console instead of a Wii2. They need another console that left as much impact as the N64.

  26. RS on November 10th, 2009 2.38 am

Of course there won’t be HD. That would actually cost Nintendo money!

I own a Wii and just got a hold of New Super Mario Bros Wii. It’s great, but besides widescreen 420p and waggle controls (that would have been better off mapped to an extra button instead), it could have easily been a GameCube game. The Wii really is a slightly upgraded GameCube with motion controls.
