Forum Admin Calls Kuta “Narcissistic,” Project “Filth”
The Sonic Stadium, which recently realigned itself as nothing more than a fan site and is typically tolerant of most fan work promotion (even having reporters dedicated to such projects on the front page’s Community Blog,) will apparently no longer support efforts to revive Richard Kuta’s Sonic fan film.
That is the stand Sonic Stadium Message Board administrator Roarz, who on Saturday threatened to “instantly” ban any member who posts anything about either the call-in effort to Sega of Japan to get it back off the ground, or the project itself.
“Most people who really have a passion go out and make things happen, they don’t whore themselves on every conceivable Sonic site,” the admin noted.
Roarz himself, who used to assume the name Roarey Raccoon on the forum and whose interests on his profile include “cartoony furry art,” went off in saying the threat was, in his words, “a bit of fun,” calling the project itself “hackneyed, pointless filth.”
Roarz himself called Kuta, who was behind the project until he abruptly put the brakes on it, a “narcissistic prat” who can “bugger off.”
The new, arbitrary policy and its delivery seem to fly in the face of several aspects of the SSMB, which includes, among other things, a Sonic Showcase sub-forum, where members can discuss fan created works, including video. The forum’s rules note a 3 strike system for infractions that include spamming, but rights are reserved to immediately ban individuals who are either “downright obnoxious” or the “worst offenders.” Of note here is Roarz’s personal attack on Kuta himself in the announcement; Kuta is a member of the SSMB, and the rules do not allow member flaming, a rule that apparently doesn’t apply to the forum’s administrators.
This, while Kuta, as far as can be found, has not blantatly promoted the project on SSMB.
If it holds, it would be a major setback in rallying fan support to get the Sonic fan film back off the ground. Several SSMB members have been supportive of the effort, but some discussions have gotten out of hand, forcing topic locks at the hands of SSMB moderators.
It’s not clear whether other SSMB admins or TSS staff agree or support Roarz’s mandate. But while TSS had originally endorsed the effort–and Kuta himself–several years back, later coverage in 2007 had taken a more critical approach.

Made a commercial for you, it’s about a 20 second spot.
http://instantsonic.sonicretro.org/audio/voice_acting/TSSZnews_anti-inflammatory_ad.mp3
@FTA: Seconded. If I’m reading this correctly, Tristan is basically saying that Roarz and/or any other furry should shut up about Kuta’s movie because it’s about furries.
…lolwut?
@ InstantSonic – A++ and spot on.
I’m not referencing his ED article; in fact, I absolutely despise Encyclopedia Dramatica and anything remotely connected with it. What I stated was a fact that Kuta himself has confirmed on more than one occasion, and which I personally find no shame in admitting. If people have a problem with his own personal life choices, that’s their problem–not his.
As for the “irony”… how is that ironic? By all means, a good portion of people who are into the Sonic series can to some extent say they can at least tolerate anthropomorphic characters, which have existed and been used in literature since the earliest folk tales and works of fiction. Having a particular interest in that kind of surreality doesn’t mean that every work to contain those kinds of characters are going to be invariably interesting; if that were so, several hundreds of failed franchises and even Sonic games would be universally loved by this group of people just for having those characters in it. But they don’t, and they’re not.
I haven’t seen any evidence–or even claims–that Kuta’s movie has been made with any particular aim to appeal to the furry fanbase than any other fan production featuring Sonic the Hedgehog characters. Is the Sonic OVA supposed to specifically cater to furries or something? That doesn’t really make any sense.
With that in mind… while I appreciate an explanation, I’m still not really seeing any solid reasoning for my posts to be deemed “inflammatory.” I made a solid point that I think should have been seen and considered not only by your eyes, but by the group of peers–the massive group of peers, as you yourself have noted–that are present in the comments section on this particular news article. My aim was not to be inflammatory–nor was I–and there is very much validity behind the point I’ve made.
So please, spare me this “one more time and it’s a ban” bollocks. I haven’t been inflammatory, I’m not going to be inflammatory, and I never have been inflammatory. I wish no ill towards Kuta, nor do I feel he should be looked down upon for what he does in his spare time. He interests and his life are his own, and nobody has the right to judge him for that. In the scope of his actions regarding this movie, however… that’s a different story; one that I’m not terribly interested in, mind you, but a story nonetheless.
@Not Surprised: I concur my good man. It’s the most ass-backwards thinking ever. It’s the same as all those so-called “True Sonic Fans” from a few years back that flooded forums and YouTube saying stuff like “A true Sonic fan loves every game he’s in. Only fake fans hate them.”
Just the stupidest thing ever. Just because you like something doesn’t mean you have to like EVERYTHING about it. Like I like my pet dog, but not when she jumps up and hits me in the balls.
Amrtie?
“It’s a damn shame The Sonic Stadium and its staff can’t see it the same way, and obviously don’t have the moderating capacity to let a civil discussion about the merits of a fan film on the ropes continue on their end–instead, letting their own personal bias get in the way.”
With respect, Tristan, if you had managed to stick around and be dedicated to the fanbase from 2005 onwards, you’ll have known how far, how long and how tense this situation is. I consider my admins and mods to be the best out there, but even then you can’t simply have a freedom to say whatever.
Perhaps the same could be reversed for you. Do you have the moderating capacity or competence to allow people to talk about Kuta’s past, even when it is relevant to the article (or rather, your reporting of the kind)? I’m not so sure you should be indirectly calling out the competence of my forum mods when you are prone to editing your own user’s comments left, right and centre. And yes, your reasons why was piss-weak, to say the least.
But that’s okay, because at the end of the day you can allow or cease discussion on whatever you like, right? It’s your site. So why, then, is it so difficult for you comprehend that TSS and SSMB is quite in its right to do exactly the same?
I can’t speak for Roarey, but I believe he actually has no strong feelings one way or the other about this topic, despite his vulgar wording. Roarey Raccoon, for those who don’t know him, is a very sarcastic, ironic dude and takes great pleasure in using as many cusswords as possible. I purely think that he was being funny, but that’s for him to say (or not, I don’t see why he should have to answer to this article at all).
It’s cute that you attempted to psycho-analyse Roarey in your article (again, your reasoning to do so is weak) and try to drag out irony, but this line of yours is quite important;
“If Kuta is doing this to appeal to the furries, as some have speculated,”
Who actually speculated this? If Roarey never said this phrase, then you have no reason for bringing up his past. If he did say the phrase, what does calling him out on irony achieve other than to belittle him?
So. You have a choice Tristan. You were either bringing up Roarey’s history to call on his irony, belittle him and thus were not covering this story in an unbiased manner (something you have been keen to take pride in). Or, you brought up his furry past based on something that he never said. Knocking your credibility as well.
Nice one Tristan, I was having a really shit day today but this has really picked it up for me. I love attention and whatnot. Anyway, I banned the topics because they’re tripe and I’m sick of seeing the flamewars; I swear a lot and use base language, adding insults, purely because I think it’s funny and it makes for a more entertaining read. All this codswallop about maturity is a right pisstake; who makes judgemental knee-jerkers the arbiters of mature behaviour?
I couldn’t care less about this issue, it’s boring. My topic slagging this guy off is the only interesting thing to come of the issue on SSMB. Must have been really, you made a fucking news story about it. Haha.
Lol Tristan and his fair and balanced “let’s delete/edit the comments that disagree with me” moderating.
… wow, no words for how amazingly pointless, biased and ridiculous this whole ‘news’ story is. My eyes literally bugged in disbelief at the line about Roarey’s interest in ‘furry art’. This whole article is a blatant bash at a respected admin, and really has nothing at all to do with Kuta and his movie.
Which has been spammed about all too many times on SSMB over time. SSMB is not his personal ad-space, and it doesn’t matter if it’s him or his ‘fans’ (or sock puppets) posting. There’s only so many times you can say “seen it already, don’t want it here” before you have to lay down the law.
And yes, the hypocrisy in attacking an admin’s so-called abuse of power and then uber-moderating the comments for absolutely minor reasons hasn’t gone unnoticed.
What complete and utter tosh.
@Tristan: This has gotten way out of hand. Dude, I really appreciate you giving me an opportunity to state the recent incidents that occurred with the Sonic project, but even I’m getting overwhelmed with these constant updates about the movie. They really need to stop. For that matter, this particular article holds no purpose but for the sake of being filler on a slow news day. From what I read, it comes off as immature mudslinging that you’d find a Jr high newspaper.
If Sonic Stadium has an issue about the movie, that’s fine, but it doesn’t need to be broadcasted like this. It’s the equivalent of publishing a news article about how “Bobby in Math class says Johnny is a stupidhead.” It’s irrelevant and childish and will only create unwanted tension. It’s a simple message board squabble that should just remain just as that. I’m not sure if this your intent to boost attention to the project, cause I think I’ve received more than I wanted with that in the past 2 weeks. As it currently stands, the project is still on hold so there really shouldn’t be any current news posts about this.
Ya know, I don’t frequent TSS anymore, and I find this site much more informative with Sonic news. But I do respect the people who run it, and this was an unnecessary story, told in a biased way, bashing someone for trying to stop flame wars on the forum. He was just being a jackass in his wording for humors sake. To just cause more drama at that…there was no reason for this.
And if this kind of crap continues, I’ll just stop coming here altogether. Cut this kinda stuff out, please. I honestly think you should apologize or re-write the article, honestly. But do as you wish.
Careful Richard–they’ll start supporting you after talk like that! ;-D
-T
So, uh… you actually gonna listen to him or no? ‘Cause this story is probably causing him way more grief than SSMB ever did :3
Yes Tristan, because we ALL HATED Richard before this incident occured. *rolleyes*
Yeah, Flyboy, I’m REALLY gonna fall into that trap by giving that a response.
Story stands. Nothing in the story is a factual error. Kvetch all you want…not gonna happen. Don’t like it, go on the SSMB and complain. Oh wait…you can’t.
-T
@Tristan – lol, don’t worry about that happening, Kuta already has the peak amount of support he is ever going to get for this project.
@ Tristan – I think Faux News called. They want their daily dose of smug back.
Nothing is factual error? No, but you’re painting someone in a bad light for no reason, and the only thing your accomplishing is creating drama for no reason, and totally painting yourself in a bad light. And now you show that your stubborn by insisting it stands. But okay then, you do that…
This may be factual, but it’s clearly cherry picked information. Which is just about what ever news company does these days, anyway. So congratulations, looks like you HAVE hit the big time! Do whatever you want in the end, Tristan. It won’t make people’s opinion of you any better.
“respected admin”………… Roaz?……… lol
*facepalm*
I know this is personal opinion, but after (finally) seeing the trailer..
.. seriously? This much drama? Um.. way to go blowing things completely out of proportion as usual, Sonic community.. o_O;
My opinion: http://rubbish.hapisan.com/sonicthemoviehog.jpg
Yes, I know other people will think differently, but seriously. This is too much drama for something so.. not worth it.
I find it ridiculous that all this turmoil is ensuing over a cartoon hedgehog. Lets all let that sink in for a moment.
Remember when this franchise used to be fun? Seems like that was eons ago.
Is it just me, or this whole article, and at times this whole site stupider than Meatwad?
@AKR – Yeah, the franchise used to be and sometimes still is fun, that is until people like you try to use Sonic as career/ego booster.
I still find it hilarious that after that HUGE “GOOD BYE FOREVER SONIC FANBASE” goodbye that you made a few days ago, that you can just casually come back and act like it never happened.
lol I mean seriously, you were even considering changing your name. Then 5 days later, yeah, I’m working on this movie again, and its going to be official.
Have you ever been tested for bipolar disorder?
“Yeah, Flyboy, I’m REALLY gonna fall into that trap by giving that a response.”
Oops, looks like you responded!
“Story stands. Nothing in the story is a factual error. Kvetch all you want…not gonna happen. Don’t like it, go on the SSMB and complain. Oh wait…you can’t.
-T”
So basically, even after the guy himself asks you to take it down because it’s giving him the wrong sort of attention, you won’t because your ego won’t let you. Such a nice guy…
Tony: It’s not necessarily that I’m stubborn (I am, but most readers are aware at this point)…it’s that the Defense Force comes charging literally every single time I write a story that isn’t universally positive. When the root of others’ arguments boils down to “It’s not positive,” it’s as asinine as anything else.
Not everything reported here is going to be a PR win. Unfortunately, at times being fair and being nice can’t be used in the same context. Beyond that, I’m not going to dive into my news philosophy, because it would be like a broken record at this rate.
-T
Just goes to show that TSS needs to revise their staff membership. What next? Will it be illegal to say “Rotor” on there, too? Guess we have the “unspoken word.” If people will just blow up when anyone mentions “Kuta” or “Secret of the Chaos Emeralds”, then we’ve got a very partial forum running. That said, I’ll follow the rules, but I don’t agree with them. Just goes to show that TSS has gotten WAY to big for it’s britches. Maybe that’s why there were those server crashes… you know, before there was a boatload of illegal content on TSS? Well, I’ll continue to support the “good” of TSS, but it’s not a site I’ll search seriously.
Still fun for me, bro. You’re just hanging out in the wrong places.
@Mr/Mrs Bullshit: I’ve been an admin for over 6 years, so yes, I am respected by those who actually know me.
TSSZ News – Fail and Balanced
And no, this isn’t an inflamitory comment. You’ve shown several times throughout recent months that your news “organization” is biased and terrible at reporting on actual news, so instead, you publish rumors, personal information, and slander.
By the way, at least TSSZ News has shown an impartial view in its reports. TSS seems to have a bit of drama taste in it. Not to say TSS’ articles shouldn’t be fun, but the swearing and pointed views I’ve seen don’t lend me much. I’ll still remain friends with the people on there, but I definitely disagree with some of their views.
@ Roarz – Granted I think you’re justified in what you did concerning this Kuta business, but to be really honest, at times you come off like an ass. I know me saying that won’t make a like of difference since you obviously couldn’t give a rats’ ass, but yeah. There are times where I think shit you say could be phrased better without all the cursing or when you saying something (after a topic/issue is just about dead/locked) makes no point other than to beat an already dead horse.
Just calling it like I see it.
@Sonichedgehog360: I’m sorry but TSSZ has NOT been impartial. TSSZ is way too pro-Kuta, where they won’t even let anything bad about him be said. TSS kinda went too far the other way, where they won’t let anything be said.
To me, banning all talk of a subject is still better than only banning negative talk of it. Especially when it’s so biased as Tristan made all these “news articles”.
Slander? TSSZ actually doesn’t make the articles into a self-assumed drama for its readers. That’s not saying that’s the status quo for TSS, but it’s certainly been common for its forum staff who swear when you report swearing, sexual harassment, and such. I sure hope TSS gets a good remodeling in staff soon. Again, I’ll play by the rules, but it’s getting ridiculous…
Hey guys, I just finished making my latest original character.
http://img694.yfrog.com/img694/9027/chillthehedgehog.jpg
He’s called Chill the Hedgehog, please don’t steal him ok?
@ Mysterious guy Y
lol I think he swears his acting skills are impressive enough to come here and act like nothing happened. Then he wonders why people call him a liar and a scammer.
Thing is, most people on SSMB actually know Roarey well enough to know that he has his ‘way’ of saying things. Some people are more rough around the edges than others, and any SSMB member who’s been there long enough to know Roarey knows that he’s been an AMAZING asset. It’s too bad that people who didn’t bother to get to know him and SSMB are mud-slinging. Probably because they’re jealous that someone can act like an ass and still be liked XD
I think that’s what Tristan has his knickers in a twist over. He doesn’t understand why Roarey isn’t almost universally slandered the way he is
Also, being a long-term and respected admin DOES give him some leeway. Most of the forum members totally get that, and love him for it even.
All in all, this article reeks of desperation. “LOOK! SOME OTHER GUY IS A BIGGER ASS THAN I AM! HATE HIM MORE THAN ME! PLEASE!!” XD
@TofB
Yeah really, and thats the sad thing, he still doesn’t get why people are so distrusting and skeptical of him. If you are still reading this Kuta, its because of stuff like that, quitting with a train of drama, then coming back not 5 ~ 6 days later.
Its also not helping whats left of your reputation.
And again, I find it very interesting that certain copyrighted material disappeared from TSS after the server blackouts. It makes me wonder if TSS was hiding from Sega’s legal arm. Trolls, if you want to find someone/someplace interesting enough to attack… NO, just kidding! I’m just sick and tired of the bashing at Kuta for selling DVDs when TSS had a lot more illegal content its FTP.
@ Bullshit: So is this about your friends I banned for reducing a mod to tears (along with saying her opinions didn’t count because she’s a lesbian)? You know that incident you briefly brought up about how someone was banned for going against a mod? Boo hoo XP. I was personally asked by that moderator to help because she didn’t know who she could turn to other than me. You’re calling it the way you want other people to see it, my dear. If you have a serious grievance with me then send me an email or something XP.
Tis always the same with you peeps anyway, you don’t have the slightest clue about anything. This is why the whole charade is hilarious XP.
But I definitely do not agree with the illegal content circulating from either said group/individual.
Any posts to tell people to calm down and be friends are probably going to be ignored, particularly mine, as I have no real influence on the community in any way shape or form, but I’ll give it a go.
There’s a little bit of an asshole in all of us, every single one, don’t try and deny it, and don’t try and show it off either. Is this really newsworthy? Roary put his foot down and banned all talk of a topic that was causing chaos. That’s it. Is this really worth the trouble? Ask yourselves this.
Really, the only reason this is a problem is because the fans were being assholes and flaming in the first place, and if they had restrained themselves and acted civil IN THE FIRST PLACE, HALF OF THE ISSUES IN THE COMMUNITY WOULDN’T BE ANYWHERE NEAR AS BAD AS THEY ARE NOW.
Nevermind the fact that Sonic’s not on the high horse he was back in the 90′s, you guys fight amongst yourselves over stupid subjects that mean NOTHING. Half of the news articles I’ve read, and ALL of the news articles regarding this community drama are never spoken about in real life, and I’m pretty certain it’ll stay that way. Why is that? Because it DOESN’T FLIPPING MATTER.
I can’t tell Tristan what to do with his website. He wants to make articles on this, all the power to him. He owns this site. I can’t tell Roary to not put his foot down on something he sees as chaotic. I can’t tell Kuta to stop trying to make a Sonic movie. I can’t tell anyone anything, but I can sure as hell suggest that you all stop acting like blasted children and act civil about the matter. Some of you are doing that. That’s good. Some of you are flaming. That’s NO good.
Let’s just get back to our lives, and bang on SEGA’s doors for Needlemouse info, because I think that’s a more interesting topic than some FORUM POOP.
– Indigo, out.
@Sonichedgehog360: Smooth. First a bullcrap load of conspiracy mumbo jumbo (there was no taking down of material for legal reasons), and then a suggestion of trolling thinly veiled as a joke. You’re just as hostile and immature as Tristin.
“I don’t like you! So I’m going to try to damage your rep and set trolls on you! Bwahahaha I win!” … yeaaaahhhh…
So the trolls are bothering TSS, too, Roarz? I’m willing to share some IPs with you if you want help tracking them all down. If that’s why you blew up, I’ll go along with you…
@Roarz: My above post was to you. ^
@Roarz, don’t forget accusing said mod (ahem) of wanting to have sex with a dog. Yeah, disciplinary action was TOTALLY uncalled for.
The Sega peeps have known about TSS’ FTP containing everything it contains for ages. They don’t care and quite frankly the idea of a large corporation caring about a fansite distributing soundtracks that only ever found limited commercial release (if even that), alongside other fan curios, is baffling.
Oh, well: ife goes on, and so does the corruption in the Sonic community… but I’ll still enjoy playing Sonic 1 and working with musicians in the fan base!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIvxqUCu41Q
^ – Sums up my thoughts of both participants of the long-standing TSS/TSSZ war. There’s some validity sometimes to what the powers-that-be up at the Stadium do, but at the same time Trist, editing comments and threatening people…Meh.

@Sonic360
Oh noes, sonic360 has some IP addresses. We all better stop calling Kuta on his nonsense then.
Is that the reaction you were hoping for? lol
