Archie Writer Addresses Penders Intent for 1st Time
Ian Flynn, current writer of the Archie Sonic comics, has in effect dismissed the alleged outing of Rotor in the series.
Speaking over the weekend as part of a Q&A wrap-up from fans, Flynn said that despite any intent or build up there was by former writer Ken Penders to reveal the walrus as the Sonic universe’s first openly gay character, it won’t be a plot point under his watch.
Flynn even went so far as to outright deny that any hints were dropped, as Penders suggested:
Not even worth mentioning. There was absolutely no canonnical build-up to Rotor’s sexual preference, regardless of what one of the writers might have intended at some point. It’s a interesting piece of behind-the-scenes trivia, but it has no bearing on the book.
Flynn’s comments may help settle an emerging debate among Archie followers as to whether just the intent by Penders can be considered canon. The initial certainly has sparked discussion among our readers and throughout the general community, and we invite you to continue that discussion with this new information in mind in our comments area.

Reason all the more to like Flynn.
Good job. This in no way should be considered a canon trait to Boomer’s character. Thank you.
Great job.
Thank God.
I told you people, that thing about Rotor being gay was just to make Sonic/SEGA fans angry, and to piss us!
Why nobody does this kind of s*** to mario? I think <nintendo is bewind this… but anyway SONIC IS THE BEST EVER!!!!!!
ROTOR RULES
Has the series really gone so low that this is seriously what is considered news?
Not worth mentioning…and what exactly is TSSZ news doing. ;p
SU, do you EVER shut up?
So.
No reports on the rest of his talkback, huh?
Not even worth mentioning? Why bother bringing it up in the first place then?
I forgot to mention that i was refering to this site reporting “Rotor is gay” and treating it like it’s big news. I didn’t comment on the first artical because i didn’t feel it nessecary to comment on somthing that had no importance to anything. But this artical just proves to me how pointless the previous one was.
To be honest, I come to this site simply BECAUSE I like reading about all this trivial news. I wouldn’t want the site to become too serious…
@BlackHawkOmega
Unfortunately, no, he doesn’t.
Will easy come, easy go
@RabidSonicFan
@Black-HawkOmega
Calm down. He just wrote one comment.
Just to think I was already at peace with this. But it’s a relief that this doesn’t become an official major controversy with the series.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
As far as I’m concerned, the sooner Ken Penders’ work on the Sonic comic is forgotten, the better.
Bravo! Well done, Flynn!
If people star comenting, and not trash-talk SEGA and other fans, than we (Sonic/Sega) fans will be united!
People go to Nights Into Dream and vote for Nights please
What an amazingly important story that surely impacts the inner workings of my soul. (EDIT – Inflammatory -T) My life will never be the same.
First @ TSSZ.
@Ryan Bloom: What parts of the comic did he write?
Who cares…. Only thing is that if they want a gay character, pick a real gay character instead. Lol.
@TailstheHedgehog
Penders was one of the primary writers for the Sonic comic starting at around… issue… 19? His run ended at around issue 130-ish. His primary claim to fame was starting massive story arcs that were way beyond his scope and ability, and then never finishing them. He created more loose ends than he tied up, making a mess out of pretty much everything he touched – and it only got worse as time went on. He also had a penchant for referencing dorky nerd culture (stuff like Star Trek and old comic books).
thank fuck for that.
Make him gay. Maybe the homophobes might learn a lesson two. Its such a shame that the media take the safe way out because of dumb stupid eff heads that can’t accept peoples differences even if it is just a bloody walrus in a comic.
Its also weird that the same people that said they didn’t when it was first revealed are now saying “Thank god for that”.
Fuck it, make him a gay furry pedophile. Who gives a shit? It’s not like kids reading these comics will magically assume this despite there being really no indication of Rotor’s sexuality at all.
Make him gay.
Sonic shouldn’t really tackle mature, sexual subjects like this, so I’m glad it’s not being done (not that it was ever GOING to be, given Penders left back in 2006, and it was for a future story anyway, not the main canon). There aint nothing wrong with gays, but thats the kind of subject matter I think needs to be handled with more tact then something like Sonic can really (or should) muster.
@RS Are you implying that gay people are pedophiles? Homosexuality and pedophilia are two different controversies, however, homosexuality isn’t the atrocity.
@Osnic What do you consider a “gay” character? If, and I do hope so, Rotor were to be adapted on as gay, I wouldn’t want him to be the stereotypical drag-queen, pink, c**ksucker’s lip bullshit.
Having Rotor as a gay character would seem quite fitting towards defeating the argument that everyone is straight all the time perfect mold always. I don’t see how it’s such an issue.
God forbid a non-stereotypical gay character existed, then you might have to view a gay character as something other than comic relief or something to make fun of and bash…
gay people exist, and you usually can’t see someone’s sexuality on their surface.
