Decisive Voice of Opposition Against Wii Shutout
The results of the latest TSSZ News @Issue poll show that if Sega had thoughts of limited Project Needlemouse to XBOX Live and the Playstation Network, they may want to reconsider.
Our question asked if Project Needlemouse should be released as a download only exclusive on XBLA or the PSN. Doing so would shut out the Wii or any hope of a retail copy, which was hinted at in a recent interview with Sega’s French division.
Out of 541 votes, 61 percent voted No. Only 24 percent answered Yes. 8 percent said “Maybe,” and 7 percent were unsure. The sampling may represent a large number of fans who could be out of luck playing the next Sonic, should Sega proceed with such a plan.
A new poll is now available for you to vote on.

What are the chances of Needlemouse being made available to PC?
Poll results: 61% of Sonic fans are too stupid to realise this is an HD game.
@Epicenter712
Just because it will be HD does that mean it will only be in HD?
To put games on xbox liva and so on is just stupid. If anything goes wrong with your harddrive or something! THE GAME IS GONE! If you haave it on a disc and something goes wrong with your console. You still have the game and don’t need to pay for a new console and new games. So I think it’s supid.
You have no idea how DRM works, do you?
Of course I chose no. I don’t want it XBLA/PSN exclusive, I want a disc copy of it. =P
But really, it’s HD kiddies, ain’t no Needlemouse for yous. Plus, it’s the safest bet to stay on the opposing console(s) for this game, since this game seems to be Sega calling out “What now?” to Nintendo for creating New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Looks like this friendly truce Sonic and Mario have had for the Olympics and Brawl don’t look like it’s gonna last much longer. This rivalry will thicken again if Needlemouse delivers like the classics did. And people will flood to their copy of Brawl to fight Mario vs Sonic all because of the hype. =P
I tryed downloading games on xbox live a while ago. But I failed! My xbox had a parent lock on it and I couldn’t get it off because when I started xbox live I just typed in a load of nummbers because I was impatient! I wasted £15 on mirosoft pionts and I never got the money back! Digital distrobution sucks!
Man after Sonic Unleashed wii and all its half assness, and Black Knight well…being Blakc Knight. I seriously think that Wii should get a Sonic game that dosent have anything lacking from its respective HD counterparts, I mean its not seriously that hard to just tone down the graphices to fit Wii standards and keep everything else intact. And a disk copy of the game would most defintly be fair for Wii owners.
@Stephen: No it doesn’t… You had parent controls on XD
I care more about this being retail than some junky port and I voted as such.
I voted no, not because of the whole “It’s not on Wii” issue. I don’t even have a Wii to worry about that. Like the others that have mentioned this before, I just want a hard copy of the game on a disc, in beautiful boxart. I mean, it’s one thing to have a game on a console, but it’s another when you have the game in your hands and say, “I OWN this game”. I don’t know. It’s just something about having a hard copy of a game that makes it better because, like Osnic mentioned, if that console breaks, at least you’d have that game in your hands and not worry about losing it.
Yep. I want something touchable to! X(
@Osnic: When you buy a Downloadable game on Xbox Live, it is saved under your gamertag, which means you can redownload that game as many times as you wish for free. So if your hard drive explodes for no reason, replace it, go to your download history, and select your previous downloaded game to play again. Your argument is a dumb one.
As for me, I could care less if its downloadable or not. That doesn’t really make it any less of a game it may be. Hell, many downloadable games on Xbox Live are better than many disc released titles. And just because the trailer says it’s HD, it doesn’t mean it will be HD exclusive. Way too early to start thinking about the consoles it will be released for no matter what SEGA says or does right now, and they’re being tightlipped on just about EVERYTHING about this game. Besides, it would be unfair for Wii owners to miss out on Needlemouse if they’re not able to get their hands on an HD console.
@Stephan: Digital distribution only sucks if you’re gunna type in random numbers because you’re impaitent. For people who use it properly it’s fine.
@People who want Needlemouse to come on a disc: You guys will only end up complaining when there isn’t enough content on the disc and you end up paying RRP for it.
@Angel Jump: You could back up Project Needlemouse onto a memory unit.
Personally I don’t care if the game’s downloadable. Sure, a hard copy would be nice, but as long as the game is good I won’t complain.
All someone has to do is create a free Xbox Live Silver account, then if their console breaks they will still have all of their profile data as it’s online. Therefore, one could sign into Xbox Live on another console and since they already bought needlemouse, downloading it again would be free. Also, you could back it up on a memory unit to save time.
So does what I’ve just said clear all this OMG11!!! IF MY CONSOLE WRECKS MY SONIC GAME IS LOST FOREVER!!!!111
@sonikkumaster
Exactly, same with PSN( what I use since I dont have, or really want) a 360). But some people just dont understand…
I don’t care if it’s on a disk or not and I don’t care that it’s HD. I don’t have an HD TV.
I just want it on the Wii. I bought the last three games. Black Knight isn’t so bad if you work on it and Unleashed isn’t as bad either.
I just want it on the Wii. That is my statement.
@ Sonniku Master
Oh, ok! That’s no prob, then.
But, I still prefer a hard disc copy. I know it doesn’t matter and all, but still…
DD is alright. The only thing that bothers me is that I have to go to the store and buy a $20 or $50 PSN card. Depends on what I feel like buying.
Still, who doesn’t love adding to that collection of games sitting on their shelf?
@Osnic: “To put games on xbox liva and so on is just stupid. If anything goes wrong with your harddrive or something! THE GAME IS GONE!”
That makes no sense. All download transactions are saved in your account and can be re-downloaded for free. A dysfunctional game disc however can’t be replaced as cheaply.
@Crysore: Do Wii owners need to get everything to be satisfied? Compared to the other 7th Gen consoles, they have Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight, Mario and Sonic OG/WOG, Sonic Riders ZG and their own version of Sonic Unleashed.
HD console owners have Sonic 06 and what some would call the “definitive” version of Sonic Unleashed. That’s it.
Do all Wii owners feel this entitled?
This poll was kindof formed on a rather shakey premise, so I’m not sure the results justify the means.
Downloadable games are lame. ‘Nuff said.
@Cody Collins (Azukara)
Even without Needlemouse, SEGA and Nintendo will be rivals again. As the the contract SEGA and Nintendo made that said SEGA cannot make a console for 10 years after the partnership between the two companies is nearly over, SEGA might make a new system.
There will be a new system based on the currently market-tested arcade console RingEdge, good chance that it’s for home consoles
If they are going back to rivals, maybe SEGA will win back on top, since -FINALLY, everyone is waking up to the wii being very average and packed with boring party-games and being seen as “Grandmas’ fitness machine” I don’t really care if it is on Wii or not, I wouldn’t mind it on PC (though it probably won’t happen, you never know since SASASR is coming there) – Don’t really like the idea of it being DLC, I would love a retail copy. :c
to the person who said is it HD only, the anser should be no! All HD games are usally HD but SD is always availble! Its only the 50Hz and 60Hz thing that counts….
all true.. all true.
PS: I`m downloading mine on the trusty PS3!
yep PS3`s good
I didn’t vote, but I really don’t think nor WANT this game to be a retailer. If you ask me, making a strict 2D sixteen-bit game and putting it on a 4-plus gigabyte disk is a waste of time, space, and money. Putting in on the Wii’s Virtual Console — possibly won’t happen, ’cause this game’s in HD, and the Wii is a SD-only console — and downloadable only on XBL and PSN for a reasonable price will help sales, and Sega won’t need to spend thousands of dollars downloading them onto disks.
What instantly came into my mind when I saw the teaser was “New Super Mario for the Wii” – Nintendo have rarely changed the formula for their Mario games since the N64 and they still sell like hotcakes because of the nuanced touches.
Even if they’re going back to basics after failing to transpose the character into modern adventure gaming – this isn’t going to be an easy project. We’ve all been playing Green Hill Zone for the last nineteen or so years so you can’t be too reliant on nostalgia and still appear “fresh”. Additionally, you can’t stuff the game with story and characters that drag the pacing down… This is a challenge that I hope Sonic Team and their marketing people are ready to take on without attempting to be all things for all people. Simplicity will be the key.
And, yes, I also hope SEGA goes back to being a real competitor to Nintendo, and since the Genesis generation are now reaching the average gamer age (29) – it’s time they had a console that we can now afford to kick Nintendo’s and Sony’s ass.
Oh, and NO MORE WATER LEVELS! I am cautious considering how lazy the design of the newer games have been.
@ thejobloshow
I hope they have a ton of water levels.
Tristan, this doesn’t necessarily mean most of the voters even considered the Wii. I’m sure many did but I for one thought it was specifically regarding the “XBOX Live and the Playstation Network” ala download-only rumor. A disc is very important to me.
Now I don’t have anything against a Wii port and think the “LOL HD” thing is a gimmick, but while I do own a Wii it’s not a huge concern for me. I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s a “decisive voice” although it’s okay to say it “may represent a large number of fans who could be out of luck playing the next Sonic.”
It’s funny, RS, because I was tempted to nearly ask the same poll question this week but change the wording so that it said “XBOX360/PS3″–counting in any prospect of a physical copy and outright shutting the Wii out, then comparing the results.
It felt redundant, so I didn’t do it. I still might. There remains time…
-T
They can go ahead and not release it on the Wii for all I care. (The only next gen system I have). Chances are they’ll fuck up again as they always do.
I would like to clarify why I voted “No.”: I did so because I do not want the game to be a downloadable one, not because I care about whether Wii-only gamers get the content or not. I would like the game to be a nice, long, new, complete 2D Sonic game, not some downloadable rubbish.
I want exclusive for PSN/LIVE
Anyway
1st – If game is only download content ,all consumers had to buy the original. And this is a good point for sega create another great sonic game.
2nd – I live in Brazil, the games have HIGH cost value.Se these games were content to download, pay a low cost.
3rd – another question is for other costs and the environment.
You do not need raw materials to produce the game.
