Nintendo, DS Series Wins Black Friday Blitz, Wii Slumps

Nintendo is claiming victory in the Black Friday shopping rush, with their estimates pointing to an excess of 1.5 million hardware units being sold by the company during last week.  But it may not be all roses, particularly for the Wii.

About two-thirds of that figure, which reflects the whole week of November 22nd, makes up combined sales of the Nintendo DS and the DSi.  The Wii, according to Nintendo, sold 550,000 units.  While impressive, it’s a huge downturn compared to the 800,000 Wiis sold in the same period last year.

In contrast, though Sony enjoyed a good week, they claim to have sold over 440,000 Playstation 3 consoles during the week.  It is a fantastic number in light of the PS3 price drop that occurred earlier in the fall, and much needed, given low sales through the life of the system.  The price drop may be what the doctor ordered for Sony to stay competitive in this generation.

Microsoft has stated they will not be disclosing their Black Friday results until the NPD Group releases their findings.  Though company reps have hinted they had double their best weekly showing for the XBOX 360, that is usually a sign of a disappointment in comparison.  That is to be determined.
