RUMOR: Sonic Comics Coming Soon to Mobile Platforms?

If So, Don’t Expect a Free Ride

A post on Sega of America’s Flickr account is hinting that Sonic comics may soon be available on select mobile devices.

The post was made earlier this week and then quickly buried with the ASR information onslaught.  Showcasing an autographed copy of Sonic #200 by Patrick Spaziante, the description reads, in part:

Word has it that you’ll also be able to directly download Sonic comics via iVerse in the near future!

It’s the first such hint of such availability, and there is a bit of precedent.  iVerse already has several main Archie series editions available both separately and via its iVerse Comics mobile app for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch.  A similar platform is also being developed for phones that use the Google Android platform, but is not yet available.

If it happens, don’t expect to get Sonic comics for free.  iVerse’s main platform is subscription based, meaning you’ll still have to pay to view each issue on your phone.  Several Archie issues are available outside of the platform on iTunes, but at a price of up to $1.99.  Sonic comics usually run $2.50 a pop.

Still, it’s an interesting development if true, and it will allow Sonic fans to carry their comics on the go if desired.  We’re treating this as rumor for now, but we’ll keep track of anything new–the prospect certainly doesn’t look farcical.
