Sega Addresses Needlemouse Info Timeline

Hoping for Xmas Miracle?  Prepare for Scrooging

In a recent Q&A between Sega and Gamespot, Sega did advise Sonic fans ever so slightly in relation to Project Needlemouse–hurry up and wait.

Yes, Sega’s lips appear mum on the next Sonic until 2010.  That, at least according to Sega’s Darren Macbeth, who fielded one question on the game in Gamespot’s recent trip to Sega HQ in Japan.  Short and sweet:

More information on this project will be revealed in the new year.

Noteworthy is the final sentence in the Q&A–an advisory to keep December 28th in mind, as Gamespot will address “all these games” with previews and the like.  However, that may have been a reference to the other Sega titles originally meant to be a part of that Q&A, including Yakuza 3, Resonance of Fate, and the new Super Monkey Ball.

So, with the Holiday season out of the way, 2010 should shape up to be a very exciting buildup to Project Needlemouse.  We’ll be sure to keep you on top of all the developments here.

I hope they’re taking their time on Project Needlemouse, unlike rushing ‘06, which was a disaster.

@slimjimmy – The reason Sonic 2k6 was so horrendously rushed was due to the 15th anniversary for Sonic, the Christmas rush, and the PS3 release over the holidays. Project Needlemouse isn’t… in line to be released right next to -anything-, and given the time put into the Hedgehog Engine for Unleashed (though the game itself wasn’t -perfect-), methinks that they at least have their heads on their shoulders somewhat better than three years ago.

Only time will tell, sure, but I don’t think we really have to worry about something like -that- again.

Until, you know, the 20th anniversary around the holidays with the release of PS4 or something. :b

Its also 2D. So the engine is a bit easyer to make. This won’t fail :D I know it

  5. Sonic Unleashed (SU) on December 23rd, 2009 7.20 am

I want to see the great Hedgehog Engine working please, I know this will only be 2D but they still can use the Hedgehog Engine :)

  6. Osnic on December 23rd, 2009 9.17 am

I like the Hedgehog Engine, I really hope they use it in Needlemouse. Cus it’s a good engine. IMO.

  7. Werehog on December 23rd, 2009 11.16 am

The hedgehog engine is mostly just for 3D right?

  8. Ethan Kerr on December 23rd, 2009 12.31 pm

@Werehog: The Hedgehog Engine was primarily designed for Sonic Unleashed, which contained 3D and 2.5D partitions within the stages. It is possible to use the Hedgehog Engine for a 2(.5)D game. That said, it’s possible for Needlemouse to make use of the engine.

    Sonic Next 2010 :D

Hedgehog engine would be HORRID for Needlemouse. We don’t need a major platform sonic rush at this point. They promise to return to the roots, and that’s what I expect out of them.

  11. UltimaHedgie on December 23rd, 2009 1.20 pm

Hedgehog Engine has nothing to do with it being like Sonic Rush. The Hedgehog Engine is merely a graphics engine that processes later parts of stages while running the stage, and allows for CG renders to be layered over pre-made polygons. It has NOTHING to do with the gameplay whatsoever. The fact that Sonic Unleashed had some GAMEPLAY related to Sonic Rush means nothing for what the Hedgehog Engine actually does, and I’d have to say that the Hedgehog Engine would be perfect for Project: Needlemouse… assuming that they’re going to use 3D graphics, which we don’t know yet.

They can use the Hedgehog Engine for the graphics while still making the physics engine built from the ground-up, that being more based around how the game plays and feels, as opposed to how the game looks.

@flame6753: Just because a game would use the hedgehog engine, doesn’t mean it’ll be an HD Rush like the day stages are in Unleashed. It’s okay for them to use the Hedgehog Engine because it’s just for the graphics primarily. For Example: the werehog stages ran on the hedgehog engine too, but it wasn’t like Sonic Rush because SEGA used a different engine for the game play.

please be a sonic good type game but dont rush it we will still have time.

  14. Sonikku Master on December 23rd, 2009 4.26 pm

Why do people think the Hedgehog Engine handles 3D and 2.5D transitions? It’s just a graphics engine, and a darn good one at that.

  15. Werehog on December 23rd, 2009 4.44 pm

But it’s built from the ground up so I’m pretty sure they won’t use it this time.

    Hedgehog Engine P L E A S E!

it was a very good job for Sonic Team

i love the places in Unleashed (Apotos *w*). and if this places looks like Old mistic-sicodelic stages of Sonic
with H.Engine the game (project-NeedleMouse) will be pretty awesome

  17. Stephen on December 23rd, 2009 7.37 pm

It might be as good as sonic 06, which is one of my faves.

  18. GREG THE CAT on December 23rd, 2009 7.56 pm

    @Stephen:

Uh huh, what kind of stuff are you smoking? Because, I really want some to actually try to find any aspect of the game great.

Aside from that, I do hope for information SOON. Just one gameplay video or some screenshots, and I’ll be fine. But I want something as soon as possible after waiting for months.

Bout freaking time Sega. Cant wait!

  20. ThE InFoRmEr on December 25th, 2009 5.28 pm

Which brings me to the point how would New Super Mario Bros Wii compare & contrast to Project Needlemouse.

  21. ThE InFoRmEr on December 25th, 2009 5.30 pm

    @Stephen:
How low can you stoop when comparing Sonic games?! Huh?!

  22. Chisuun on December 28th, 2009 9.58 am

New information on Needlemouse! What is it?

    “More info coming in 2010!”

Why does this feel like Cloverfield all over again.
