Is an American Invasion at Hand Next Summer?
Planning conventions like the Summer of Sonic can be a year long task. Tracking down special guests and setting up for such requires plenty of pre-planning, and that may be why those closely connected with SoS are hitting the ground running early.
Though we’re treating the story as rumor due to the scarcity of information, it appears one closely connected organizer is trying to get Ian Flynn, current writer for the Archie Sonic comics, across the pond to this year’s convention. Staff from the Fleetway Sonic series have previously attended.
That appears to be the sign from a question ArchangelUK publicly pitched, as part of a recent round of asking Flynn questions about the comics. That open invitation appears valid not just for Flynn, but any other member of the Sonic comics interested.
“Thought I might as well ask now,” AAUK quipped.
Surprisingly, Flynn responded in the public Q&A, saying he personally would be interested, but with a few strings attached:
I can’t speak for anyone else on the team, but I’d love to if I A) could schedule it and B) had some kind of sponsorship. Air fare and hotels ain’t cheap =P
An Archie presence of this caliber would be the first of its kind for SoS…if it happens. Though we have this public inclination, it’s hard to tell if anything’s going on behind the scenes, especially since we’re many months away from the next Summer of Sonic. Since the inquiry appeared informal, treat it as rumor for now, but we’ll try to keep tabs on it.

The man belongs with Disney’s other craptacular stars from the past few years. The only way to get his voice to ever sound any value of good is Auto Tune. And seriously? Auto Tune is cheating. Either you can sing, or you can’t.
However, there has been one video featuring Stephen Hawkings called A Glorious Dawn that used Auto Tune brilliantly.

The last Summer of Sonic made me incredibly jealous of western inhabitants. Not only did they have TJ Davis and Richard Jacques present, but also Bentley Jones and many more. I really wish a tour could be organized so Canadians and Americans alike could rejoice in such an awesome event, but ah well. =P
If they can get the Archie team to be involved then that would freakin’ rock. I just hope there’s someone like me at the convention that can be positively enthusiastic about their work, instead of negatively pessimistic about it being based off SaTAM.

Yes. Yes it would. However, I’m sure that if they did get into the convention EVERY new fan who has this mysterious claim that Sonic X was good will bash the hell out of Flynn saying things like “the Freedom Fighters aren’t popular anymore, dur hur hur, Sally sucks cause she’s the color of poo, Rotor is gay… Add someone like SILVER in ther!”
It’s still a miracle that Ian can actually give the games characters great personalities. I could tolerate Shadow a whole lot more if Ian was writing the scripts to the games. Sonic Universe #1 made Shadow into an actually cool character.

I always go Scourge green with envy whenver SoS comes along, I’ll make it someday but at least for this year, my chances of being able to attend and meet all those incredible people from the Sonic community are nonexistant -______-

I sort of agree with you on Bentley Jones. His music is okay, but a lot of his songs do sound like they belong in High School Musical or something like that. The only song he sang that I liked was ‘Dreams of an Absolution LB vs JS remix’ because of Jun Senoue’s guitar playing primarily. I don’t mind if people like his music, but this is just my opinion. /=

Yeah, and for what? One song? I think most people here will agree with me that his “They Call Me Sonic” was a pathetic attempt of a remake. It was BS. He decapitated the metaphorical head of the original, chucked it through a blender, drank it in a protein drink, vomited the remains of it, and displayed for all the world to see. If you somehow enjoy it, then there’s not much I can say… Get some real tuning in your ears and all of a sudden, your ears will start bleeding when you hear ANYTHING he sings without modifying it through a machine, which then questions that one song, Dreams of An Absolution, and makes it null and void. But, believe it or not, people like him for more than Dreams Of An Absolution. I personally enjoy his remixes more than his stage performances. I bought his solo album “Trans//lation”. I plan on buying his new LP coming out. I enjoyed his work on Overclocked remixes before he hit it big. It’s more than just his singing talent everyone admires, mate. If you cry about someone in the Dance genre distorting their voice in post after the booth, you might as well cry to 75% of the dance market out there.

Plus on top of that while I might not personally care for his music outside of his work in Sonic ’06, I do have to commend him for being such a good sport and making appearances at the last 2 Summer of Sonic to interact with the fans. If that’s not a good sport of a professional, I don’t know what is. And no, I won’t agree with you that his version of “They Call Me Sonic” was shit, especially as I haven’t heard of it until now and will definitely be checking it out.
I’d just thought I’d point that out since to me, spouting rubbish like that makes a person come off as some elitist, uber-fan, and those I do not care for at all because it’s been my experience that they tend to suck the life and liveliness out of a simple conversation.
As for them recruiting Ian, it’s not really that much of a surprise since it is a convention devoted to Sonic and they have had both writers and artists for the Europe only Fleetway comic. I am a bit surprised that the invitation doesn’t seem to be extended out towards some of the previous writers before him like Bollers and Penders given their tenure with the book and more memorable instances within it such as the “death” of Sally and the initial 25 Years Later plans.

The fact that BJ is such a down to earth guy, will talk to his fans and oh yeah, PERFORM AT A FREAKING COMMUNITY CONVENTION is why people love him. I think he has an amazing voice and his work before he started singing was great, do you judge everything by how it sounds? And did you even attend SoS?
