Yes, It Means Another Sonic Re-Release
Sega will once again be seeking mobile money for games you may already own. This time, however, it will be via their own proprietary platform for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch.
It’s being dubbed Ultimate Genesis, according to a Gizmodo report. Sega plans to release a free app to the App Store in early February. The app will act like a Genesis emulator, and you’ll be able to play classic Sega titles through the interface.
The app will come with Space Harrier II. However, Sega will offer a gallery of classic fare for you to purchase. This will include games that have already been released as standalone to the App Store, including Sonic the Hedgehog, which can be purchased through Sega’s app for $5.99. It will join a suite of four other titles ready to buy at varying prices out of the gate, and they include Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, and Shining Force. The library is expected to grow over time.
While neat from a technical standpoint, the bottom line for Sonic fans is that the original game will be released twice on the same platform, within a year’s span. It’s unclear whether the Ultimate Genesis app will recognize the presence of any existing Sonic on the device.

Wow! I got an ipod touch for xmas!
I would definatly like to download outrun and sonic 3!
I already have sonic 1 port
This is a must for me>
Any news on this for the UK?
5.99? No thanks.
Most of the games are 3.99, not 5.99.
It’s still redundant at this point.
I wonder when we’ll hear of Christian Whitehead or the Sonic CD port soon.
As long as it eventually has Sonic 3 and knuckles, I’m happy!
Gimme S3&K and Ristar and I’ll be a happy camper.
Welcome news. What confuses me, however, is the tone of this article.
How dare they offer up goods and services! My local DVD shop has the gall to still have copies of DVDs I already own. Don’t they know that I already have them? Do they expect me to buy them again the next time I walk into the shop? Bah and humbug.
You fail to mention Golden Axe is also available as an app in the app store, stand alone.
@Spexfox: Don’t forget Streets of Rage.
@Owen
In your example, the DVDs already exist, and the store is simply stocking them. Here, SEGA is re-(re-re-re-ad infinitum-)releasing Sonic 1.
This is not cool. man.. even when you can play the awesome games on a lot of platforms now…. it makes it less unique.
While Owen makes a good point about more exposure through repetition/longevity, it’s still seems like an overly redundant way to do it, especially since Sonic 1′s already been on the iPhone. Is this version gonna be better, or is it just the package assocation that makes the difference?
Bah, not like it’s a new thing for them to use a “proprietary platform”* for releasing new games onto old platforms.
* “proprietary platform” = whatever Steve Snake (creator of Kega, Kega Lazarus, and Kega Fusion) did under contact for SEGA for the PC re-release of S3&K
