PC, PS2 Gamers Impacted
Sega community representatives have confirmed that servers for both the PC and Playstation 2 editions of Phantasy Star Universe will close this March, and support for the Sonic Team produced MMO will cease.
The XBOX 360 edition will continue to be fully supported, according to the announcement on Sega’s forums.
“SEGA would like to extend its sincere thanks to those who have played on the PC/PS2 servers over the past several years,” reads the announcement. “The final update for PC/PS2 servers will be this January 29th, 2010, which will start the long-awaited MAG+ event. This event will receive the same updates & web support as the event on the Xbox 360 servers.”
January 29th is this Friday. On that day, no more subscriptions will be accepted for the affected PSU editions, and those who have accounts in good standing will be able to play for free until March 31st, when the formal shutdown occurs.
But community manager Edward@Sega explained later that the loss will allow Sega to focus more on the XBOX 360 edition, which has fallen behind its Japanese counterpart when referencing DLC releases:
While sad, this is also a huge opportunity for the Xbox 360 version of the game. Players here are well aware that the Western version of the game has fallen behind the content schedule for the Japanese version of the game, but in focusing our resources on just a single version now, we do have the chance to actually close that gap. There’s content on the Japanese version that we all really want to see, and have been vocal about wanting to see – content that I’m extremely excited about as well – which we will be bringing here. I will, naturally, be able to provide more details as they become public & available.
With the unreleased content still coming here, PSU still has a lot of room to grow & change, and that’s exciting for me, as a GM and as a player. Seeing PC/PS2 close is going to be difficult for all of us who have invested our time & energy into our characters there. Seeing new life for this game through Xbox 360, however, is a big positive, in my opinion.
There has been some interest expressed by those impacted to move over to the XBOX360 edition, if their character data can come with them. It’s not clear whether Sega can or will accommodate that request.

Well i find the only thing this game is good for on the 360 is people spamming nude pics of themselves for ms points (i don’t know if they actually send nude pics being as i’ve never been stupid enough to give anyone ms points for anything). My only saving grace is that i never brought the full game and just played the mulitplayer beta which is surprisingly still up and running. But then i just f around in the lobby anyway so there would be no point in my buying it.
