Inside the Sonic Scene at the International Toy Trade Fair

Chess Sets, Squeeze Toys, Mini-Figurines, and…Another Console?

From our friends and news partners at German site Spindash.de comes an on-the-floor report from the 2010 International Toy Trade Fair in Germany, known there as the Deutsche Spielwarenmesse.

You’d be very surprised to see the Sonic presence there.

The expo carried a cornucopia of Sonic toy treasures planned for release throughout Europe, so says their article, which you can read translated here.

The big items on display include the Sonic chess set that has been mentioned in the news from many months ago.  It’s from Gaya Entertainment, and it’s still in development, the victim of constant delays for quality reasons.

“Improved were also other details such as the attachment of the Chaos Emeralds in their columns,” says the report.  “Even the color now represents much more of a gemstone.”

Gaya also had other items to show, including prototypes of Sonic squeeze toys, which included models of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman.  They still need the final approval from Sega, but when they’re released in April, they’ll go for €9.99 a pop.  The chess set is slated to be released at a cost of €39.99.  Some key chains were also on display, and they’ll be sold for €5.99 each.  It appears both the chess set and the key chains will also be released around that time.

There’s more.  Gaya has rights to distributed Impact Innovations items within Germany, and one of those items is a Sonic-themed console bag.  The item appears to be exclusive to Germany, and will run you €15.99 for a small bag and €24.99 for a large one, once released.  The Gaya representative told the Spindash.de reporter on hand to expect more information on more releases around March.

Aside from that, BigBen Entertainment had a few Sonic skins and stylus pens, mainly for the Nintendo DS.  Meanwhile, French company Abysse showed off some mini-figurines in the Sonic realm, slated for release this November.  Looks like Jazwares will have some competition.

But the big ticket item at the Toy Fair was another portable console offering from Millennium 2000.  They’ve produced portable systems for the Genesis and Master System in the past.  Now from them comes something branded the “SEGA-Camera.”

“The highlight for 2010 is the SEGA-camera, a combination of video console and digital camera with 14 built-in Mega Drive games, a 2 megapixel digital camera, color display and media player functions,” says the article.

We have pictures of that and a small smattering of everything else mentioned from the International Toy Trade Fair in our gallery below, courtesy of Spindash.de.  We also encourage you to read their article, which has ten additional screenshots.  We thank Fish of Spindash.de for letting us know of their adventures of the 2010 International Toy Trade Fair and providing the information to us.
