Prepare the Pitchforks
A scan of the latest GamesTM magazine by Sega forumer axe_ninja affirms the magazine did give a 5 out of 10 score for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. The scathing remarks almost immediately open with a Mario Kart comparison.
“Over the years, Mario Kart has proven time and time again that its addictive, deep foundations can continue to give over a prolonged period,” says the article, which does not have an author named. “Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing lacks this. From the moment you take your novel vehicle out for a spin, it’s almost immediately obvious that something is amiss.”
Other remarks from GamesTM include “awkward” moments, and more concerns about an inconsistent framerate. The review did praise the first track of Samba de Amigo on its composition, and its character selection rooted in a “touch of nostalgia”–but that’s about it.
GamesTM did disclose that it did not review the online component of the game. You can read their thoughts, scanned, below.

Asr better
Basically what im getting from this is. “Its not Mario Kart, so it sucks”.
Typical
ASR beats Mario hands down. Why? It’s for the 360 and PS3! Let’s see Mario pull that move. Likewise, I’m willing to bet that the online system is far better than Mario Kart’s. Plus it has DLC coming? Seriously, how on earth do reviewers like this sleep at night, scoring great games so low, just cause it’s Sonic and not Mario. >:(
Mario & Nintendo All-Stars Racing: 11/10
I have a friend who hates sonic and always plays geeky game like world of
warcraft but he downloaded the xbox
demo and actually turned
off his pc to play a good game
for once in his life. HE LOVED IT
I’ll get the torches
I hate people that don’t look further than there nose it long. This is just the stupid ist review ever..
I’ve said this before and i get more and more pissed off when i have to say it again but here goes. When you make a game in a specific genre it is going to be compared with what is considered to be the best in that genre which in the the case of cartoon kart games is Mario Kart. This fact is not going to go away until somthing comes along and beats Mario Kart. It’s the same for other genres as well. Sonic is not being singled out on this one game, it’s happens all the fucking time and moaning and whining and complaining about it isn’t going to change a damn thing. People still seem to moan about First person shooters being compared to Goldeneye. 3D platformers are still being compared to Mario 64, RPG’s are still being compared to Final Fantasy VII. Why should Sonic be given special treatment?
@TailsFox88:
Catwoman was multiplatform too, did that make it’s a better game?
Wow, what a biased piece of nonsense. They are saying it’s like Mario Kart, but because it isn’t Mario Kart it is crap. The reasons they give are very poor as well. It is more or less that they suck at drifting, some of the items have a similar function to Mario Kart ones and the All-Star moves don’t throw you into first place. The only sensible complaint is slowdown, and im pretty certain that it’s not as game-breaking as they are implying.
It’s clear that they are Mario fanboys who still hold a grudge for Sonic after all these years. If the game was Super Smash Bros. Racing they would probably be all over it.
To clarify, I am a Mario (and Super Smash Bros.) fan too. (not as much as Sonic though) So I am relatively unbiased. It is obvious that this review isn’t though.
To the stupid reviews that say this game is a rip off of Mario Kart you know what go ahead and say it at least this is a rip off that doesnt fail at being just as good as Mario Kart these reviews are just hating Sonic for trying to compete with Mario Kart do these reviewers not know that the Nintendo(Mario) Vs Sega(Sonic) War is over already my god i guess they dont considering how alot of ppl want Sonic to take steps back and just be 2D forever this is bs the game is good.
@Rolo
Yes. In my opinion being multiplatform automatically makes a game better, because if you want to play, and you own a current game console, then you can. So, even a piece of crap game like Catwomen is better, because IF I wanted to play it, I could, without having to buy a new system. I would love to play LittleBigPlanet, but I don’t have a PS3, therefore, it’s worth goes down slightly in my book, because you have to have one system to play it.
In short, A game is only as good as it’s ability to be played and enjoyed. If I can’t do that because I don’t own it’s specific console, then it would do me no good to buy the game.
look at the missing link part (which seems to irk me). You can tell that he didint play the game enough to understand the controls (which are amazing and i can finaly play a racing game). Ive played mario cart and the game play is soo shallow that i only played it once and i got in first way too ofetn. ASR took me a while and i loved the challenge when played in advanced.
Certainly, this is an interesting review. One thing particular about it bugs me, however: it generally gives off too much of a “this isn’t Mario Kart, therefore it sucks” sort of feeling. No doubt there will be some people who won’t be able to take this review seriously because of that.
All in all, I’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to see if their points have any merit.
As the resident dual Crash fan, may I mention that I still wonder how all the Crash racers were able to do so well in the rating stakes with attitudes like this around?
No proplem, It gave Mario kart 6 of 10 I think.
I like Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing better too because of the DLC. Mario Kart is nice and all but it doesn’t have the DLC.
@TailsFox88:
There are many reasons why a game may not go multiplatform. The developers may want to focus on one system so that they can optimize the game for that system. They may also strike a deal with the console company for better advertisements.
The sole fact that you do not own a PS3 does not really count as an inconvenience. Unless there was an actual reason why you couldn’t obtain a PS3 (lacking the funds to purchase one only counts if you seriously can’t afford one, rather than spending the money on another non-necessity) then the game’s supposed ‘worth’ could possibly still be left intact, unless you have some sort of bad impression of the console itself. Going multiplatform has ruined games before…not ASR, of course.
I’ll get the RPGs
This is really an unbiased review.
Dumb Asses that`s what they are but thank god we`re getting DLC & that means Ristar & Vectorman !!!
@POWERdown
I’ll let you determine whether I can buy a PS3 or not. I just got my paycheck today. After depositing it, I have a little more than $400 in my bank account. In the next week, I’ll spend $50 on Car Insurance, and $275 on rent. Not to mention, I might like to eat sometime this week also. Also, my current job is docking my pay… again…
The last New game I bought was Zelda Twilight Princess for the GameCube (Not Wii) I get all my games from trading on Goozex cause it’s cheap.
As much as I would love to get a Wii and PS3 at the moment, there’s absolutely no way that’s possible.
And I’m not saying that exclusive games are a bad thing par say. Exclusives that take full advantage of a systems features are great, not to mention, they help keep the industry afloat. What I am saying is that I like being able to play games. Particularly, I really want to play this one! I’m not trying to be mean to any system. I’m just glad that I have the ability to play this game!
There you have it folks. GamesTM oficially belong to Mario’s highly prestigeous “Kiss my arse” club. Just look at them suck on that plumber’s rear end for their nectar, Daaaamn! they look like pros overthere.
Ok, GamesTM, thats enough butt kissing already. Why did they score ASR that low is out of my logic. Really, they’re praising the inferior half-donkey product over a real racer? Come on now, even for a bunch of Mario failboys that’s prettty low.
From now on looks like talking about a non-nintendo game being better than a nintendo one is a taboo issue in the media. Shame on all of them cowards! Too afraid of exposing the truth to the world! Looks like as KentonSumo said it is up to us to spread the truth, to enlighten those players whose judgement had long ago been clouded by nintendo’s shred of ignorance. I’m for sure going to do my part in this crusade, Whos with me?
@Rolo:
That is a very sad truth in the gamming industry. especially when they overlook the continuous improvements and evolution in gamming in favor of nostalgia. If anything those people that hold in such high regards games like Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, FFVII and the such are ither blind or just afraid of the changes. Establishing the rules in a genre is important indeed but even more so is to redefine them.
If one just looks back all the time the future will pass by one and that person won’t even notice it for the sake of not evolving.
The media needs to tell things the way they are, in a bias free fashion, otherwise they just say that they lack the integrity to do so for sake of their loyalty to a game company (clue: it starts with the letter “N”).
BTW i have clubs and stones for the lynching…
Mario Kart Mario Kart Mario Kart…
Well, I’ve seen worse reviews for a Sonic game.
This magazine has gone so downhill. I bought this mag a couple years back and was impressed with it. All the reviews where well written and it had interesting articles and covered everything. So I subscribed. Over time there reviews have become more biased and ive just lost interest.
They even gave Sonic Rush Adventure a 5/10 despite in the previous issue calling it a must buy…?
I just stick to reading Retro Gamer now. Much better magazine.
AHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA.
Wow. I knew this would happen.
And quite frankly I agree. Again, you fanboys jump on the reviewers case because your franchise “deserves better reviews”. Problem is, they’re being completely truthful. I saw a gameplay video, and I personally thought it looked bland and uninspired. I really doubt I’d be able to squeeze any fun out of this game, especially with it’s terrible drifting.
Face it, fanboys. The game sucks. Accept it, stop being sheep.
@GREG THE CAT: Thank you, at least sombody agrees with me.
Tizzle.
gh
…if ppl havent really PLAYED the game we canot even say: it sucks or its the best.
@GREG THE CAT…um u said u “saw a gameplay video”. yet ending my case.
but im not a “fanboy” of sonic…but i would by his games if they look/ feel good enough to put my money on it. and same with MARIO. (oooh what a sin *roll of eyes*). the only video game i would hands down put my money on without a ? is KH. it was my first new generation video game. and i still love the sieres. =D. but yeah. btw i came to realize that alot off ppl i hang with like sonic…thats alot off black ppl u guys. lol ;p
everyones said everything. im just going to say 5/10 is better than the black knights 3/10, that one really got me sad. infact i was playing that game the other day (once you learn all the fighting styles and moves, theres a lot more to it)
